Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits 3423 Connecticut Ave. N.W. D.C. 2008
HAPPY BASTILLE - 14th Of JULY, 2013 Everyone! It's this Sunday so, of course we will be talking a whole lot about that this week, and tasting French wines where and when we can! Cheers!!!
ON ANOTHER SUBJECT ...
I HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN that Greek wines were varied and really superb and that they came in all shapes, sizes, textures, clarities, colors and tastes : I did not know that Greek food was as stimulating and as wonderful, not until yesterday that is when Sotiris Bafitis hosted a luncheon at KELLARI Greek Seafood Taverna here in D.C. at the corner of K Streets and Connecticut Avenue N.W. That is when I was dazzled and thrilled with the colors, flavors, textures, smells and tastes of a whole fresh world of seafood from around the world - fresh seafood and fresh vegetables : protein and vegetables my wife said : no wonder I felt great after sampling the wines with this extraordinary meal of octopus, Chilean sea bass, Alaskan Char, Portuguese sardines, crab, lamb - ALL the traditional Greek sauces, an amazing fresh salad of greens, onions, olives and tomatoes - and , fresh dandelion greens, too.
I SAMPLED AS WELL the most amazing indigenous grape variety called Malagouzia ( grown high up way above sea level so that it was bright, fresh and airy and a delight for this oppressive heat and humidity ), and a Merlot-blend red that was blended , I believe with the traditional indigenous Xinomarvo grape I think, or was it the Agiorgitiko grape variety? I left my notes at home as it was my day-off yesterday. There was a red simply called " Hercules " that was a fruit-forward, lush, bright, lively and refreshing red that was as easy to enjoy all by itself as it was with the food. There was something for everyone, and all really well-priced for their extraordinary quality and value.
SOTIRIS did include one Italian red, very fine, very famous, a " classic " now called TAURINO Salice Salentino , the 2008 Rosso Riserva, $18.99, 14% alcohol by volume, a blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. We have sold it for years and were delighted to rediscover it back on the market as it really did, single-handedly put Puglia and this southern region of Italy on the map years ago, way back in the 1980's. We have it here for you all now. The Greek wines will have to wait till Michel Dumas gets a chance to try them soon.
I SPOKE WITH managers Leftiris and George and told them that this month we have featured now TWO GREEK Wine-Tastings here :
1) one with Jody Jackman of Winebow that included wines like the " Young Vines " Naoussa 2011 dry red Xinomavro, $16.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume - go to : www.thymiopoulosvineyards.gr for more info - tasty with a meal ; ...
2) the 14-18h Peleponnisos 2012 dry rose made from the indigenous Agiorgitiko grape variety - produced and bottled by Gaia Wines, Koutsi, Nemea : deeo, dark rose color, like a light red - a great dry food rose , $14.99, 13% alcohol by volume : and the ...
3) elegant, polished, refined, satiny-smooth dry Retsina : RITINITIS Nobilis from Gaia Wines, $17.99, 12% alcohol, by volume, for more info go to : www.gaia-wines.gr. What a lovely treat, much more pleasing for me to drink slowly, sipping and having the flavors linger.
WE ALSO POURED KIR-YIANNI Northern mainland Greek wines with Danielle Davidowitz of Dionysos Imports. With Danielle we have from KIR-YIANNI in Naoussa, Greece :
1) " Petra " 2011 dry white, crisp, good mineral and citrus from the 2 indigenous Greek grape varietals called Roditis and Malagouzia , $17.99, 13% alcohol by volume , that is very lively and bright and an excellent food wine. Go to : www.kiryianni.gr for more information.
2) " Dyo Elies " 2009 dry red blend of Syrah, Merlot and Xinomavro ( On Special for $17.99, regularly $31.99 a bottle ) that is very flavorful, hearty, robust, more modern in style and better with food. Come get these last few bottles, the price is INSANE for this quality. 14.5% alcohol by volume, www.kiryianni.or for ideas of what to serve with this 2009 Dyo Elies.
NOTE : We originally bought the KIR YIANNI Greek wines from Sotiris when he introduced them here years ago in 2004 or 2005 was it? I cannot remember. But he got them and others going at restaurants like KELLARI and ZAYTINYA then and they have stuck and made Greek wines a permanent and welcome fixture here in the international wine world that is Washington D.C. Cheers, thank you all : it's been great to support Greek wines here over the many years and now this past month at our weekend wine-tastings.
