GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT FRANCE'S LOIRE VALLEY
ALSO A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN WITH US about the many wines of the Loire
Valley , all the grape varieties ( Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc,
Cot ( also called Malbec ), Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc and many more ) as well as
the areas from the mouth of the Loire river ( the Muscadet region ) to Saumur
and Vouvray and Montlouis all the way to the eastern tip with towns like
Sancerre and Pouilly-Sur-Loire. Join us as we welcome Danny Haas of Vineyard
Brands, Roy Cloud of Vintage 59 and Jeremy Sutton of Kysela Imports. We will
have seventeen wines from dry to fruity to sweet whites, dry rose and dry reds
and three sparkling wines, too.
WE ALSO WELCOME COLLEEN HUGHES OF METRO TEENAIDS as we are doing this
wine-tasting to also benefit the Metro TeenAIDS group on this evening by asking
you all to make a $5 donation to help support them in their work here locally
in Washington D.C. For more information on this go to : www.metroteenaids.org
or call : 202-543-8246. WE ARE THINKING, TOO from now on of supporting local
charities and causes with each Big-Theme Wine-Tasting that we do. The next is
in August so if you have suggestions please let us know by responding to this
email. OF COURSE the donations are completely up to everyone that comes and
they may be for more than $5. WE FEEL STRONGLY a part of our community and we
think that is a good way to help where we can even if it may only be in a small
way. Please share any thoughts that you may have on this subject. Thanks in
advance for anything that you do for us.
AUTHOR, ROY CLOUD will also be selling and signing copies of his new wine book
called : " To Burgundy and Back Again " that will be on-special for $15 and not
$17 a copy. Roy will also be tasting his Loire Valley wine selection.
ALL WINES FROM BOTTLE #1 will be On Special tomorrow night at our Loire Valley
Wine-Tasting. Hopefully the weather will hold out for us till then and you may
all enjoy this tasting of 17 wines, conversation, too with Colleen Hughes and
Danny, Roy and Sal. You might also consider going to dinner here after the
tasting at one of our excellent local restaurants as there are many right here
within a two-block radius. I ALMOST FORGOT : our regular customer Kate gave me
the idea for this with her Facebook entry asking : " Wouldn't it be nice to
have a day where we do not have to think of Hiv/Aids? ". I am paraphrasing
this, of course and as I responded I mentioned that we might work on this
together? Kate will also be here along with Colleen and they will have
information to pass out as well. Contributions are to be given to them
directly. Cheers.
IT'S TOUGH TIMES With Talks On National Television last night about our budget
to run the country expiring in a week or more and with still no sight of a
compromise and solution to fund our government?! Exasperating to one and to all
I am certain. I watched the two segments on television last night and it just
knotted my guts and tied my face into contortions that it does not easily take
on. I had already enjoyed some of the Bobby Kacher MAS CARLOT dry Costieres De
Nimes rose 2010 ( on Special for $10.99 ) earlier with my wife.
AMY WINEHOUSE DIED AT 27 : The famous British singer passes away and makes
everyone talk about the age 27. Why 27? Why so many talented artists have died
at the tender age of 27? What a shame! Did she like any wine at all? I never heard. What wine to drink when having
conversations about the age of 27 when people are just starting their lives and
have to deal with such profound depression? All sad. I can't tell you what wine
to drink but now I am enjoying a sip or two as I get ready to eat my lunch of
the 2007 ISOLE E OLENA " Ceparello " Toscano IGT ( $78.99 ) that we will sell
here in August. It's superb : a real work or art.
I JUST MET " they call me Charlie " who tells me he is 84 years old. He came in
asking me for " a wine to enjoy with my hamburgers , a simple Mouton Cadet or a
Parallel 45 Cotes-Du-Ventoux? I started to show him some wine choices as he
clutched his bottle of CUTTY SARK scotch under his right arm and we began to
speak. Actually I listened to him as he began to speak of being in the war and
having drunk some pretty bad red wine. It was just after the war. He's British
and was an ensign then and in the area around Naples, Italy he would take his
bottle and have it filled with the red wine. I mentioned that it might have
kept him alive as he was still here? His eyes twinkled when I said this and he
spoke then ob making his was back to England and have trying some local Polish
moonshine that almost did kill him. Again he smiled and it was a bright,
vibrant and warming smile emitting from his eyes just above a gnarled salt-and-
pepper beard and mustache. HE ASKED ME IF I KNEW HOW THEY MADE THIS POLISH
MOONSHINE? I said : " no ". And " they call me Charlie was off again chasing
the twinkle in his eyes and the story he wanted to share with me. " Well, they
take a sack of potatoes and some sugar and a car generator and they take it
round to the side of a pig stye. They do this to throw the authorities off as
the smell from the pig stye is enough to keep anyone away from it. " So clever
I thought and also remarked that even that had not killed him as he was still
here now by my side. He remarked again with the same gentle beaming countenance
that " this " as he stared at the bottle of CUTTY SARK ( On Special for $17.99
a bottle ). He told me also that someone that does some hand work for him
brought him some of his local moonshine and that it was quite good, too but
nowhere as intense as the Polish potato vodka that he had drunk in Poland back
in his twenties. Thanks for sharing this with me " they call me Charlie ".
These were some good stories and now I am sharing them with our readers, too.
Who knows? One of them might already know you and have heard you tell this
story?
NEWS FROM MICHAEL another one of our local customers has been here buying his
selections and now twice telling me stories of the fight between our local CVS
here at the end of our block and the local pharmacy that's on Conn. Ave.
directly across from the National Zoo entrance there : Cathedral Care Pharmacy
that has been in business in that same location for ninety years. I told
Michael that I would mention this all to you in case you are unfamiliar with
this recent development and want to " weigh in " with any opinions or concerns.
Michael wants everyone to sign online at :
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/save-dcs-cathedral-care-pharmacy/ . And for
more info also contact : Michael Ross at mross1949@aol.com.
FUNNY HOW THINGS ALL COME INTO FOCUS and how one thing makes you think of
another. On Saturday evening before we closed an old elementary and junior high
school friend of mine , Crystal came to the store and told me about just having
returned from Normandy, France and having walked the beaches and written about
this period now and of the past when our American soldiers came onto the beach
under enemy fire. She was so overcome with emotion this time that it was almost
impossible for to get her work done. She spoke of how still the French in
Normandy, France love the Americans. Perhaps not so in other places, she said
but in Normandy to this day they still love Americans. I liked this story and
these sentiments and I am happy that you shared them with me. I look forward to
hearing more over time. I also look forward to seeing one of the stories that
you wrote of this and that also published some of your photos, too. Cheers. By
the way : how was your bottle of SAINT ANTOINE Pinot Grigio/Garganega dry white
Veneto blend ( $13.99 )? It's a great seller for us and I perfect for this
weather, too. I just sold a bottle a few minutes ago to a lady that may use it
for an upcoming party with friends? " It's a small world after all " goes the
Walt Disney song. Those lyrics were written so long ago and yet they still now
ring true.
