Carles Escolar of Catelan, Spain Here Tasting Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Carles the wine maker for CELLAR EL MASROIG ( MONSANT ) was here tasting his new Catalan Spanish releases : three reds, one white and one rose. The white " Les Sorts " 2006 100% Granacha blanco was the surprise: made like a white burgundy and aged in old burgundy barrels. It really impressed me and made me think of white burgundy which is one of my personal favorites. The dry rose has also been a grand treat and also sold very well. We'd expect the reds to be good : the " Sola Fred " 2005 ( a blend of 90% Garignan and 10% Garnacha ) is the most fruit-driven and approachable : the " Castell de les Pinyeres ( 45% Garnacha, 30% Carignan, 10% Merlot and 5% Tempranillo ) 2003 , $19.99 is so much more flavorful, layered and structured : and the : Les Sorts " 2003 Vinyes Velles ( Catalan for old-vines ) , $32.99 is a masterpiece of Spanish country flavors sucked from the soil and baked by the sun and rendered beautifully at the hands of Carles and his team at Masroig. Cheers. Here are some pictures of Carles and our customers at the tasting at Cleveland Park Wines and Spirits ( www.clevelandparkwine.com ).
