Cleveland Park WineCleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

WE SPEND ALL our time trying to keep our shelves stocked with exciting spirits to uplift yours!

SPIRITS to spirits, all essential to keep the flow going correctly.

I LOVE ' Word-Play ' as you can clearly read in my lines here. Hope you enjoy them, too

.

I AM WORKING on my ' strip collage art ' using strips of transparent adhesive tape that I start and then double-back with the adhesive tape to seal the items I call : ' found and discarded pieces ', and the whole of them I will attach to rope and it may be strung up wherever anyone wants, and the name is " Prayers ". I hope to string them up soon at the East Wing or the Hirschorn Museum on the Mall, and before that at " Catharsis on the Mall". We will see.

BE A DREAMER and work to making them reality! That is my plan, spread the word, let's fly together.

COME IN OUT OF THE HUMIDITY! We have plenty of that this week, so stay hydrated and come and see us, we have plenty that will stress us less, and make things more enjoyable as we wait for this weekend's rain!

SORRY TO SEE SUMMER GO!

BUT That is Officially, now we will have our Indian Summer and this may be when we get the most enjoyment, as the weather should be nicer, so we have a whole lot to look forward to.

WE ALSO HAVE our Mini-BIG-THEME Wine-Tasting on Wednesday, September 19th, 2018 , 5:30-8:30PM to look forward to. We will have five talented , energized, alive and passionate people pouring the wines of Chile, South Africa, Australia, some great sparkling wines and the very fine wines of Brazil, too.

SO : Mark Your Calendars! Everyone welcome, everyone always welcome, bring family and friends and colleagues, too! This is a great event and tasting 21 wines is always a real treat.

HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH, too! We have lots here for you, very exciting, just received four great kosher wines from Israel that will be something very special to include, two reds and two whites I believe, all four I will write about later here in our store email.

IT WAS GREAT to see so much positive energy this past week celebrating both the lives and the contributions of Aretha Franklin, John McCain and Neil Simon. We need things to celebrate and not ignore, shun or outright snub. So this felt great, like it should be, it felt right.

SO WITH THEIR EXAMPLES let's move forward together and embrace what we have in common and grow stronger.

THE STORE IS FILLING UP!

WE RECEIVED SO MANY GREAT deliveries today!

WHAT FOLLOWS below is an old store email I wrote and sent you all on September 6th, 2011! Read and enjoy it if you have time, see what you are interested in and let us know. Cheers, TONY  9/4/2018

WE SPENT TWO EXHAUSTING DAYS at the end of last week before Labor Day re-Stocking our shelves and floor displays with MORE OF EVERYTHING as we were pretty much out of about everything. This was due of course to both an earthquake and a hurricane all in one week. That's a big first in a very long time in these parts. Everyone was concerned and very much aware and no one wanted to run out of the essentials. We here are blessed that you in included us in your list of " essentials ". From what I heard from a number of you we were at the top of that list. Thanks.

WE RECEIVED DELIVERY AFTER DELIVERY and so I have just assorted some of those items and brought them here to the office to include in this email. From beer to liquor to wine : something to please many of you including a whole assortment of the single bottles of FAT TIRE beer that we have not been able to sell here for years much to your great disappointment. We have received two drops in the last two weeks and sold out of both of them within days. You all may be buying more of them than usual as you may be afraid that this is a temporary thing and that the FAT TIRE may disappear as quickly again as it just appeared?!?

TRAFFIC TODAY on the day after Labor Day was not as bad as they made it sound on the news earlier. I was delighted as you simply never know anymore and so you plan a bit more time to get to work and hope it is enough. I was about ten minutes late because Angel was parked in my space and I had to get Nelson to get him to move his car. Oh well, it only happens once in awhile. Then a bit later one of our customers came and asked if I would be willing to walk down to the store at the end of our block that makes extra keys to be a witness to a home sale? I said : " Okay, I'd be happy to ". That's what we do here all the time being a neighborhood store. Suzie of Wake Up Little Suzie joined as as she needed two witnesses to sign the papers. Done in less than five minutes and it made me feel good to help in any way that I can.

OUR COCA COLA cooler just broke over the weekend and so we have just replaced it with a brand new sparkling, bright and zippy-looking new unit . Be prepared to be awed and blown away, amazed and pleased and do tell Ravi and Santos at the register that you noticed. It's okay if you spend a few more seconds in front of it fully appreciating the whole new " newness " and brightness of it all. The red colors on the words Coca Cola are pretty jazzy.

ARE YOU ALL READY TO BUCKLE DOWN and face this cooler weather and getting back into the grind? Are you still fighting this eventuality? Did you all get plenty of relaxation and time off or are many of you still planning to take your vacations later when the prices of rental properties at the beach and in the mountains and lakes all drop drastically? WE ARE HERE for you in either case scenario. If you want something just come on by or call us and we will deliver to you.

BEER From Santos Rivera :

     1) Organic Handcrafted Raspberry fruit ale from SAMUEL SMITH ( On Special for $6.49, USDA Organic, 1 Pt. 2.7 Fl. Oz. ) is brewed in Stamford, Lincolnshire and bottled in Lancaster, North Yorkshire. It's yet another very welcome addition to the handcrafted beers and ales that we sell here daily. Come check it out.
     2) Belgian Pale Ale from HARPOON Brewery ( $8.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, Boston , Massachusettes and Windsor, Vermont ) - a golden amber ale with a mellow malt body, some spicy fruit flavors and spice, too. Go to : www.harpoonbrewery.com for more info.
     3) Original Malt Liquor Munich, German LOWENBRAU ( On Special for $8.49 a 12 ounce bottle six-pack, 5.2% alcohol by volume ) is back in stock here and so now all of you that have lamented in the past that the LOWENBRAU that you have tasted recently is not as good as the " original " : you can drink your favorite once again. This is good news, don't you think? Go to : lowenbraubeer.com for more info. Cheers.
     4) Amber-Style AVALANCHE Ale, original fine handcrafted amber ale ( On Special for $10.99 for a 6-pack of 12 Oz bottles ; first brewed in Breckenridge, Colorado in 1988 , 302-623-brew ) is back again after having not been available for quite some time. Anticipate an avalanche of activity once the news gets out that it's available once again here!

LIQUOR From Ravinder Sharma -

     1) Cranberry-Cherry Liqueur MALIBU Caribbean rum ( On Special for $15.99, 21% Alcohol by volume, 750ml bottle, www.malibu-rum.com ) makes a nice drink : 1 Part Malibu Cranberry-Cherry, 2 parts Cola, and served in a tall glass over ice with cherries as a garnish.
     2) Tennessee Honey, JACK DANIEL'S original recipe ( $22.99, 35% Alcohol by Volume ) is blended with JACK DANIEL'S Tennessee whiskey. It's got a lovely mellow flavor and is very nice slightly chilled.
     3) Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Aged 18 Years from BOWMORE Distillery ( $109.99 a bottle, ) with all this extra aging has a mellow/mahogany color, a bouquet that's creamy with caramel toffee, ripe fruit and smoke aromas. Notice the soft fruit flavor blended with a hint of chocolate and a light smokiness? All so subtle and refined and divine. Balanced and with a finish that you all will never believe until you try it. Don't be in a rush once you do : linger and focus and close all electronic things off and enjoy/savor the moment. Very special.

WINE -

          WHITE :
     1) Sauvignon Blanc Private Reserve 2010 from ALMA De Chile ( $14.99 from the Aconcagua Valley ) has really got some extra body and flavor and backbone. I really enjoy it, especially when there is some food to soften it just a touch as it bristles with taste - like a guitar string that has been plucked - electric!
     2) Dry white Rioja from Spain : the MARTINEZ LACUESTA 2010 is back again ( $10.99 ). It's really quite refreshing and perfect for this cooler, rainy weather that we are enjoying after Labor Day. Great value and really nice with a grill and after the National's baseball game with Stephen Straussberg ( spelling ) pitching his first game after a year is it?!? ). Actually you will have to drink some of the ALMA Sauvignon Blanc tonight as the MARTINEZ LACUESTA will be back again tomorrow. We sold out over the weekend.
     3) Viognier Estate-Grown from RABBIT RIDGE in Paso Robles, this 2008 ( $8.99 ) I opened here last week to a great reception from many of you. Buttery and oaky and many of you could not believe how much wine you all tasted for so little money!?! I agree : if you like this style of wine it's pretty amazing but you have to love the power and the edge that the oak brings to it. Cheers.
     4) Rheinhessen, German off-dry 2010 Silvaner from WEIN KELLER ERBACH, from the Flonheimer Adelberg region ( $10.99 a full liter bottle ) is really quite a great deal. A whole lot of delicious Silvaner for so little money. Silvaner is the name of the grape and this is a delight to sip with or without a meal.
     5) Dry, powerful Bukettraube 2010 ( an almost extinct now grape variety called Bukettraube that originally came from Germany and Alsace I believe ) that is now growing in Cederburg, South Africa. This white from the CEDERBURG vineyard was tasted recently ( Friday, August 19th, 2011 ) by wine-maker David Niewoudt here and we sold out of all five cases of the wine that we had. It's so flavorful and so distinct and so immediately appealing to most palates ( $18.99 ) that it's hard to refuse and not buy a bottle or more. David signed some of the bottles for us. We have five more cases finally back in stock and they are going quickly so please come and get some more while we still have it. We are one of the very few stores in the country to get it as it is very rare and there simply is not enough of it. The dry Chenin Blanc that David tasted was also exceptional and we will get that back again soon. It was a great tasting.
     6) Godello 2010 from Bierzo, northern Spain and made by FLAVIUM ( $8.99, Vinos De Los Vados, Leon, 12.5% alcohol by volume ) is really quite a value and a treasure. COME DISCOVER the beauty and the power and the flavor of the Godello Spanish grape that is usually twice this price if not more.
     7) Chenin Blanc 2009, estate-bottled from L.A. CETTO from Mexico's Valle De Guadalupe, Baja California ( $11.99 ) is really dry and crisp and refreshing. It almost tastes as if it has a bit of Sauvignon Blanc blended with it to give it such a dry and edgy taste that is best with food and less for casual sipping. This would also be good to enjoy when you grill something, even with this rain that is hitting us off-and-on so far today. It will bring a smile to your face and hearten you as it's much cooler today.

          REDS :
     1) Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 from ANTIS in Argentina's  Mendoza region is On Special for $7.99 ( down from $10.99 ) and it's showing beautifully now. One of our customers came to the store to buy a case last week the next day after trying it with her boyfriend : it really impressed her. It's the first case she has bought in years!
     2) Shiraz, Southeastern Australia estate-bottled ( $9.99 ) was tasted this past Saturday by Alexis and it's a drier, more complex, more old-world style of Shiraz: spicy, dusty-dry and the fruit and the spice and the fruit are all nicely blended with the oak of the wine. great value for under $10 a bottle.
     3) Petit Shiraz 2008 Estate-Bottled from L.A. CETTO in Mexico's Valle De Guadalupe, Baja California ( $11.99 ) is quite spicy with a dry herb taste that when you swallows dries the palate. That's also a bit of tannin working there. It's a food wine : fruity up front, medium-to-light-bodied and then the dryness hits you. Enjoy some food with it and it opens gradually like a bottle of French wine. With the interest in Petite Sirah today this is a great one to enjoy when you want a dry, classic, food-oriented version. Alexis poured it for everyone this weekend here and it really sold well. Come check it out and discover some of the wines of Mexico : you will be both surprised and mostly pleased I believe - and for only $11.99 a bottle - very reasonable.
     4) Toscana Rosso Poderi Del Giuggiolo CORTE ALLA FLORA ( $11.99 ) , this 2009 is mostly a fruit-forward, smooth and bright toasty-cherry style Chinat-style wine to be enjoyed casually with or without food. Lovely - a " must-try ".
     5) Barbera D'Asti 2008 MIGNANEGO ( $14.99 ) was tasted here this past weekend by John and Theresa Morrison and it was sublime : smooth as a one-week old baby's skin. So silky, so soft. Great all by itself.
     6) Merlot Reserve 2005 from ANTIS in Argentina's Mendoza region ( On Special for $10.99, regularly $16.99 ) is showing really well now. It's a great food wine that reminds me of French Bordeaux and the old-traditional style of Bordeaux wines. What a great deal as well. So much flavor for so little. Enjoy with red meats, cheeses, when you grill, with some vegetarian dishes as well that are especially well-seasoned.
     7) Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 from the Margarita Vineyard of BROADSIDE ( $21.99 ) comes from California's Paso Robles region, Creston to be exact. It's 14.1% alcohol by volume and really well-balanced and showing quite well now. We just recently enjoyed this bottle the other day here and decided that we had to have it now.

WEEK'S TASTINGS :

Call : 202-363-4265 for an update if you want to know what we have selected. We may also have Don Manuel here from his own winery in Argentina here from 3-8PM? Call about that as well. We are trying to work it out. Cheers.
Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 ( 5:30-8:30PM ) : We have our Chilean Big-Theme Wine-Tasting with special guest Manuel Rojas here to pour the ALMA, DOS PASOS and IN SITU wines. We have invited other wineries to be a part of this which includes VIU MANENT, FALERNIA in the Elqui Valley, and more to pour their wines, too. It's pretty amazing the dry white Pedro Ximenez 2010 ( $11.99 ) that is amazing all by itself. It's made by an Italian wine-maker that spends half his time in Chile making wine and half in Italy. Our local rep Gary Diamond brought him here months ago through the Neil Empson portfolio and it was a great treat to meet him and taste some of his wines with him : both from Italy and from Chile. He's not married and so can do this amazing feat of going between countries like he does to make these very tasty wines. Join us, never any charge for the tasting. Come learn more about the wines of Chile. You will walk away from here impressed and very content.
