Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

We ARE READY now , Are YOU?!?

I COULD TALK ABOUT  the fact that Ramaden begins this Sunday or I could be more
general. Life is so short and I am constantly reminded of this as we get into
the heat and the humidity of this summer that holds such promise. One of my
favorite parts of a conversation with any customer is asking where and if they
are getting away this summer? I get so many varied answers and some are so
positive and I just want to go along with them. Some are more challenging as in
how I should respond because often now many include people taking care of a
family member or a loved one, like Albert and Isabel, like Stephen used to do.

I ASKED ANDREW if he was really in Cahors, France and he said : " Yes, " that he
was as so many producers and  importers are anxious to get their wines available
here in fine wine stores as well as in fine restaurants and hotels, etcetera. I
told Andrew just now : " I must be in the wrong business!?! You are always
traveling and I am always left here behind! I am not happy with you Andrew " I
said. Oh well, I guess that I just need to get a wholesaler job again so that I
may travel like he does, as a wholesaler and sometimes as a broker.

JUST THIS WEEKEND FERNANDO was telling me how much he liked the CEDRE Heritage
Malbec, Cahors 2011, $15.99, 13% alcohol by volume, from Vire in France's Lot
region just south of Bordeaux on the Atlantic coast almost, home of France's
great stew that is such wonderful ' comfort food ' called cassoulet. Any of you
know it, any of you enjoyed it, any of you had it at Lavandou Provencale
restaurant in the past? I have and I did , and I love both Cahors and cassoulet.
Chill this CEDRE HERITAGE slightly and enjoy it with something steaming-hot off
your grill. What a treat. I have also visited Cahors the town and the region and
loved it years ago.

I WAS WINED AND DINED Andrew by the two Rigal brothers back in the mid eighties.
What a wonderful treat that was. I went with my good friend Philippe the mayor
and also the owner and the chef of the restaurant LA PETITE RIGAUDIE in the
center of Cahors. We were well-received and tasted and had lunch there and were
the first to bring the wine, to import it to this area to the Mayflower Wines &
Spirits? Yes, I think that is all correct.

BUT I WOULD HAVE LOVED to have been on the Pont de Cahors with you Andrew, the
great time we could have had, what an experience. Loved the pictures you posted
Andrew. Thanks for sharing them.
NEWS FLASH : Our good customers Lisa and Rick were just here will I was speaking
with Dan Terrasa of William Harrison Imports and giving him an order for July of
many fine French wines  ( and our first-organic Argentine Malbec that I
recommend when not recommending Cahors , the ALPAMANTA 2010, $14.99 a bottle,
13.5% alcohol by volume, from Mendoza, Argentina, that is bright and rich and
really fruit-forward-complete-balanced Malbec-so-fine-too ).

Lisa HAD A BOTTLE of the 2012 Pinot Gris FORIS Rogue Valley, Oregon, $16.99,
13.9% alcohol by volume, that they just recently used two cases for their
wedding in Ogallala, Nebraska where Lisa is from : Rick is from Oregon. See the
connection? ANYWAY, I started asking many questions like : " And they were able
to get the wine for you there? " Lisa and Rick both smiled.

LISA SAID  : " My sister got it for me from where she lives across the state.
It's five hour's away from Ogallala. It was the closest that we could have it
shipped for us and since she lived by the distributor she could pick it up at a
local shop there.

I LOVE THIS  kind of story : this is real life! Love it!! I had originally
recommended it to them when they came in search of an Oregon wine for their
wedding. They tried it that night and Rick just told me they immediately said :
" No need to look any further." Gotta love that, too! I certainly do. As the
stories finished that I read years ago to my kids on the " Pound Puppies " : '
And another job well done by the pound puppies... " WOW: LIFE IS SO VERY
unpredictable. Regis Scheithauer of Roanoke Imports just stopped by. He has sold
me these FORIS wines like the Moscato, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer ( all in stock
here ) that we sell regularly and have fans for all of them.

I SHARED THIS STORY  with him just now and he smiled and said : " They make some
good wines. " They certainly do Regis. It was when you visited with the rep from
FORIS the last time and I tasted five or so that I fell in love completely with
this 2012 Pinot Gris declaring that it was my favorite of the tasting. I told
her and Regis several times, and I believe it is perfect for drinking now and
this hot weather, with or without a meal. Cheers Regis, and thanks for all the
great service, time, energy, sample bottles that you have given us over the
years here. It's been a pleasure and an honor to work with you so well and so
closely introducing so many wonderful wines over the years here to our
customers. Cheers!

I JUST SAW KAREN here of ' Karen and Craig ' that needed some sake and it was
nice to catch up with her and discuss our families and the neighborhood , and ,
' the most important thing, a lasting relationship ' : I agree Karen. I hope
that the HAKUTSURO sake, $13.99 works well for your recipe. Let me know.

Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

We'RE GETTING READY FOR SUMMER / let's do it together, make the most of it! we'd
love to be a part of it with you! More time to simply " be ".

I am taking to heart the words of the singer/producer named usher on the popular
singing show last night called " The Voice ". He basically said of the remaining
contestants that they had already proved themselves and that he wanted them
including Michele his last-remaining team member " to Be ", and to enjoy the
moment, that they would probably revisit it many times later together.

That's some good advice and I do believe that she took it to heart, too as she
performed fabulously last night along with the other three contestants. You have
all worked hard and proven yourselves, too I am sure and can now hopefully take
a moment just " to be " and to enjoy the fruits of your labors?! One would hope
so, I would hope so, I see you come to the store having put in the many hours,
having traveled much, having met the crunch of a deadline, having worked through
the office politics and all the rest.

HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYED FATHER'S DAY! Mine was very special. We have some very
special things here for you all to enjoy now. You will have to come by and check
them out. I will mention some of them here as it has been a period of mad
activity here for us all as we have received some of the shipments of ale, beer,
ciders, liquor and wines that we have been waiting patiently for. NOW we can
finally talk about them with you and not bite our tongues with the excitement
over them. That's good : it's all good. It's good / it's actually grand for us "

Steven Shaw with his father own and make the wines of New York State's Finger Lakes SHAW Vineyard and on Tuesday , June 17th, 2014 he brought a little bit of original, authentic, just what-it-is-LOVELY-tasty-dry-earthy-a-touch-rustic-untouched-expression of -grapes growing in New York;s Finger Lakes soil, some from the Keuka vineyard , red and white that I really did appreciate because I did not think they were tampered with , altered, redefined, added-to as I find some wines today that I taste and I wonder : " What happened to the grape from which they started? Is there any grape in them? " I liked these wines Steven and it will be a treat to sell them and have you come in late July to deliver and taste them with our customers. We still need to work on a date for that? Here are some pics I asked you to take for me with your phone which you did and you sent them to me to share here. Thanks. This is my second post here on these wines, look for the first one on our Facebook page. I will also include all of this in a blog on : chatwine.blogspot.com that I will try and post later today. Cheers, happy Sunday all, watching the World Cup games? There's a big one later today... Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 6/22/2014

We will get in late July the Pinot Grigio and the Riesling for the store. Steve, Jr. is part Irish, part Lebanese by background and he and his father's wines are labors of love. They are already sold in some of the restaurants here and Steve was delivering the wines to them that are on there list.
Steve will come an do an in-store wine-tasting here in late July. Stay-tuned. Cheers, thanks for stopping by and tasting and the visit Steve, you are always welcome here. Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 6/17/2014

Tasting CACHACA Sao Paulo Brazilian Alambique Cachaca Today, Saturday, June 21st, 2014 With Owners Pierre Fernandes & His Family @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits From 4-7PM : Join Us, Never Any Charge!

Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits Obregado Zuly, Esther e Anni, we cannot wait to meet Pierre and Marcos later today! This will be a great event indeed as I do not think many people know how Brazilian Cachaca is made, and as you all use the best method, the alambique method that I believe is French in origin ( ? ) , and only charge $15.99 for a liter of it - wow, that's amazing! Really amazing! I am impressed. I cannot wait to learn more myself as I really do love selling and representing the many products of Brazil that still need lots of help here to become better-known in this country. ... I very much enjoyed talking with Pierre and learning what he had to say. I love that you all had a heart-to-heart discussion about the Soccer World Cup and whether to go there as a family or not or stay here in the United States and work hard to promote your CACHASA SP. I still cannot find your US Facebook page for it so please help me there as I have left my comments on the Brazilian page of Pierre's uncle that Pierre tells me will please him. Tell your uncle that I would LOVE for him to respond to us, LIKE us on Facebook and leave a comment in Portuguese for all to read and enjoy. ... I also appreciated very much Pierre's honesty and frankness in speaking about promoting Brazilian cachaca here in the United States, saying after I told him we do a lot with LEBLON cachaca, the Cedilla Acai liqueur and the ' aged ' cachaca - also using the alambique technique of production that he feels that you all must work together as a team and not against the other to better promote cachaca here in the United States, and that he - Pierre feels that LEBLON helps you all here as they are already a large presence here. Team -work, bravo, that's what it takes, working together just as we will today , Saturday, June 21st, 2014 from 4-7PM to promote your CACHACA Sao Paulo. Tell Pierre to send Wayne Currier a message for me that it would be great for him to stop by the store today for a visit during the tasting, that I would greatly appreciate that! Cheers ... ola, bom dia, vais, vais, vais vais , VAIS Brasil e CACHACA Sao Paulo! Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 6/21.2014

It was a tremendous inspiration and an honor to have Gabrielle back in the store last might. Krista came with him and she helped him pour his wines. Gabrielle's  ' big news '  is that  they are building a tasting room so that people may come and taste his excellent wines that are so refined, so polished, so subtle and silky that this may be lost on most or many palates today that are used to being ' hit over the head ' ( senseless?!? ) by heavily-extracted wines that somehow, in my humble opinion, loss track of the grape and the fruit of the grape that the wines started with.

I have a strong feeling that many of Gabrielle's wines may be enjoyed over a period of time once open, and that they also will not give anyone  a headache as they are completely natural with little intervention from him.

Gabrielle learned many things from his father that still lives I believe in the Veneto region of  Italy from where he is from? These lessons of his father's he has incorporated since he started making wines in 1978-79 was it Gabrielle? I know that you helped start Barboursville Winery with the Zonin family back then? You mentioned this last night during our tasting towards the end as Ze and Erica, Michael, Fernando, Kristin and I all listened to you with rapt attention as you had so much to share about the start of Virginia's wine-making so many years ago. Loved all the early references to tobacco-growing there and the initial resistance you found from Virginia to even plant grapes and start making wine there with the financing of Italy's Zonin family.

It was interesting to hear that you sold Mr. Zonin that even if you did not make and sell Virginia wine at first that you both could at least graft vines and sell various grape varieties through a nursery there in Charlottesville, VA. around the country ; and that's exactly what you did to begin. Fascinating.

We also loved hearing your story about when you arrived in 1976 being invited by faculty and students at the University of Virginia to try the one and the only wine being made then in Virginia ( now there are over 200 wineries )  and your impressions of the wine that you tasted. Sounds like we are lucky that you arrived here in Virginia and that you have helped forge the way for so many other wineries here and that your wines still stand as a great example and reference/ benchmark of elegance and fine wine that Virginia can actually produce to show the world what it can offer.

I loved hearing all your stories, too about Monticello and Thomas Jefferson's home there and gardens and now vineyards that you have been planting and making small amounts of wine to be sold there at their gift shop ( quickly, too from what you said , they do not stay on the shelves there very long as people are eager and anxious to buy , enjoy and share them with family and friends ).

I enjoyed hearing , and I smiled broadly when you mentioned that you still work in the gardens seven days a week. Bravo to you. We will have to drive down and ask you to give us a tour sometime?

It was a treat also to listen to Krista that has been writing a book on agriculture in Virginia during Thomas Jefferson's lifetime talk about her research in both Virginia and England and how many people depended and read carefully what Thomas Jefferson wrote about it in Virginia and the United States ( in South Carolina I believe Kristin said as well as in the Caribbean islands, too ). I will have to get a copy of it when it is finally published this year. She's been working on it now for at least two or more years as I have been hearing about it when she visits the store with Gabrielle.

There is so much that Gabrielle said last night, so much he says on every visit when he tastes with us. I love hearing all of it. I will write more but have to get to work now to sell more of his excellent wines. I will finish this this weekend when back at home.

The stories that Gabrielle shared are his and so I will just mention some of the topics briefly here as they are really Gabrielle's and his to share. I do not want to steal his thunder, a ' gentle ' thunder that reached near and far and is striking and enlightening, shocking, revealing and reaffirm many of the things I have been thinking and saying now for years.

I will also include many pictures from last night that we / I took with Fernando's phone ( gracias Fernando ), as there were many fun people and moments to record from the tasting.

At the end I did some ' quick pen ' portraits of both Gabrielle and Krista that I gave to them as my ' thank you ' for their time, their energy, their enthusiasm, their passion, and their fine wine that we are able to taste and share with you all. Cheers and stay-tuned for much more, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn  Saturday, June 21st, 2014   Krista was delighted to find the Pommeau from Calvados here that is made from apples in France and that she has been searching for now for many years. I told her with a smile on my face that we have had it all along, ever since here first visit here almost ten years ago in 2007 was it? All she had to do was ask me then ... oh well, she has some now from the DUPONT Famille ... pas mal mon amie ... sante, grazie Gabrielle e Kristin ...   TONY
