Mauro's Piemontese Wines, With Daughter, Monday, May 27th In northern Virginia @ Downey Portfolio Tasting 2009

Mauro speaks with his hands as well as with his mouth. I like this : he's quite passionate about his wines and it shows both on his face and expressions as well as in the movement and animation of his hands.

Shoes are the most important thing according to many in the fashion business. But are they more important than the wine? The correct answer is that both are equally important.

It was great to see Mauro and his daughter ( of CASORZO, Grazzano, Piemonte, Italy ) at the Michael Downey annual portfolio tasting on Monday, May 27th, 2009. I had missed the last two because of family obligations and so it was great to see Mauro again after three years. The first time I met him and his son and that was four years ago. Three years ago he came with his good friend Giorgio from LA SLINA in Piemonte and they did a tasting together here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( 3423 Connecticut Avenue N.W. Washington D.C. 20008 Tel: 202-363-4265 sales@clevelandparkwine.com www.clevelandparkwine.com ). I have already blogged about all these events so you can look for them in the SEARCH area here on the chatwine site.

This was one of my all-time favorite wine-tastings. It was fun , exciting and I really felt like I learned and connected with the owners and winemakers this Monday. Mauro makes a whole range of mostly excellent reds which I will mention a bit later. For the moment I want to draw attention to both the sweet red Malvasia 500ml bottle called SULIN ( $15.49 ) and the unbelievable great everyday value " Terre D'Aleramo2007 Barbera ( 750ml $8.99 and the 1.5ml $14.99 ). These are really two great reds for the warmer summer weather here in Washington D.C. Mauro also has some great labels that celebrate all of the traditional Piemontese sports ( the Tambass Barbera Del Monferrato " Antichi Giochi " for example ) and so I will have to mention those as well as vintages, styles, prices. I really like the Tambass and the Bianco dry white blend that Mauro makes with his friend Giorgio. Of course I should not forget to mention the VOULET that came before the SULIN and which is also made with the red Malvasia. Both are sweeter reds to enjoy with chocolates and with barbecued meals and all by themselves. For now I want to post this so that you may enjoy the pictures and the excitement and energy of this special event of Micheal Downey Selections.

Cheers to everyone involved at this tasting. It's quite a lot of work to organize and pull off in such a great fashion as this. You all deserve a big round of applause. Cheers, and keep them coming. I love seeing all the winemakers/owners : Alessandro, Fabio, Max, Count Ferdinand, Roberto, Mara and all the rest. Cheers, TONY

Enjoy. Monday , May 27th, 2009 : cheers, TONY
