Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits Store Email From Late November 2011 : Just In Time To Celebrate Thanksgiving : Read & Enjoy!!
Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
THE WHOLE STORE IS A THANKSGIVING compilation of many ideas and subtle
suggestions for you all to try this 2011! We are already being bombarded with
so much Christmas music and I feel that we should wait until this Sunday after
Thanksgiving to be playing it so much. I do love it. I told this to Eon this
morning as we both stocked the shelves and started to get ready for this really
busy week here in Cleveland Park. It was a really fine weekend this past one
and we were busy from start to close thanks to all of you out there with so
many special requests.
WE JUST RECEIVED the JULES TAYLOR wines 2011 New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc ( $18.99 ) that just did the top honors - Grand Champion at the Old
Ebbitt Grill Oyster Riot- Fest ( out of hundreds of wines tasted, actually this
year out of 233 submitted - it will be poured by the glass at the Old Ebbitt
Grill for the next six months I believe? ).
WE MET THE WINE-MAKER/owner Jules Taylor perhaps in May 2011 here with our rep
Mark. She has a lovely British accent. We really liked it then and are
delighted to have more of it here to offer you as you come in search of it.
Some of you stopped by last Saturday mentioning this and saying that it
reminded you a lot of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc at a better price. We all like
that, a better price that is : especially when the wine is as good as this 2011
JULES TAYLOR. WE have some in stock now for you all to get with your oysters
... just in time for Thanksgiving.
WE ALSO HAVE FREISA : that's the Italian word for strawberries! It's also the
name for an Italian wine made in the Piemonte region of northwestern Italy by
Frabce and Switzerland. This one is called CAVALLOTTO. It's from the famous
Langhe region: this one called " Bricco Boschis ", it's a 2008 ( $22.99 , 14%
alcohol by volume ). It was just in yesterday's Washington Post Sunday edition
Food section wine article in time for Thanksgiving titled : " What Do You Pair
With Baloney ? " by Dave McIntyre.
DAVE GAVE THE FREISA dry Piemonte CAVALLOTTO red two and a half stars out of
three and wrote : " This delicious red seems to capture a autumn in a bottle
with earthy, leafy notes and a hint of decay - in a cyclical sense, like a
ferris wheel beginning its descent, sure to come around again. " Sounds like
what I might write. We will open it here and give you all a taste.Probably
later tonight as this email is fresh in your minds having just read it. SO:
Join us tonight for a taste of the indigenous grape Freisa which very few
people know much about as there is not a whole lot of it around. Cheers.
RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT HOLIDAY party wines either to take yourselves
to a party or when you are hosting it. This is what I wrote in response to
those questions earlier today.
WE DON'T HAVE TO ALL BE REDUCED to the least amount of choices. There's plenty
of choices. There always has been. You just have to know where to look for it.
Here are some examples that I will mention here today to show you all just how
much range and flexibility you all really do have. We are always ready and
eager to assist you make your dreams or those of your friends' come true.
YOU CAN BE REALLY PROUD of what you bring / and or serve and it can help really
make your party special and not just a carbon copy of so many others'. You can
stand out just like the wines you serve or you bring.
YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO CHOOSE wisely and go with your gut and heart. You can be a
success beyond imagination and still bring or serve something that is
especially meaningful to you ; and that can be anything and any style, color,
dryness or sweetness, sparkling or not, and sized from bottle to box, from
kitchy and commercial to serious and known labels, from almost any state here
in the U.S., from almost any country.
YOUR WINE CHOICES For Your Parties at UNDER $20 a bottle or box can be kosher,
vegan, biodynamic, with really low-sulfer content, you name it?!? I know that
we can help you find it whatever it may be.
BE PROACTIVE, don't always wait to the very last minute, give yourselves some
time to do it right. Give others like us a chance to find what is special and
right for you. Profit largely, win grandly with just a bit more time and
planning. You will greatly be rewarded for all of this. Let us help you realize
yours' and others' dreams and have them come true. Cheers.
THIS ALL SOUNDS LIKE ONE BIG PEP TALK. Well it is. I / we need as much as you
all do as this is simply the beginning of the rest of the year and there is a
lot to fill it with. One of our sales reps, for example from the WINEWORKS
Virginia wines of Michael Shaps just got married this past weekend. They are
playing the Pachelbell Canon in C is it( ? ) as I type this and I am wondering
if they played it at their wedding? I love it. Now this is a piece that they
can play before the end of Thanksgiving and that I never tire at hearing.
Lovely. Congratulations to you Allison and your new husband, too. May you
always be blessed, healthy and happy.
BY THE WAY : The Big-Theme American Holiday Wine-Apple Cider-&-Homemade D.C.
Chocolate Tasting last Wednesday was a grand success here. Everything showed
really well and we sold lots but still have lots here and so all that is
recommended for Thanksgiving as well. We are now selling Bailey's handmade
Washington D.C. chocolates and they are in a lovely display up by the register
and they start at $9.99 a bottle. You should try some of them. They are really
special.
THE BEAUJOLAIS THAT FOLLOWED THE NEXT DAY, Thursday was another BIG SUCCESS! We
opened the MANOIR DU CARRA BeaujolaisVillages ( $10.99 ) and Beaujolais Nouveau
bottles ( $9.99 ) : and both showed beautifully. I took a bottle home to my
wife that Thursday night of the Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau ( $10.99 ) and my
wife on the first sip and announced it was " good". That's all I need. Come and
check some out yourselves, it works really well with the meals at this time of
the year. Chill slightly and enjoy fully!
AND FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT WANTING NOUVEAU : we have the BROUILLY " Combiaty "
Vieilles-Vignes " 2007 ( Old Vines ) ( On Special for $15.99, regularly $22.99
). It's a medium-to-light-bodied 100% Gamay grape beaujolais that is a real
treat and ideal with white meats from turkey to goose to chicken and veal and
salmon, too. Lovely. We will open it here this week. Cheers.
FROMM'S : La Strada ( one of three they make ) New Zealand Marlborough Pinot
Noir 2004 ( On Special for $19.99, regularly $44.99 ) is still available and a
wonderful holiday wine. We got the last fifteen cases on Friday and are down to
seven now. Don't delay, get some today! We've already sold 35 cases. It's big,
flavorful, old-world style like the red Burgundy French wines. Best with a
meal, not really a sipping wine. It's pretty darn-gosh amazing with a meal I
will add! Cheers.
TERRABIANCA 2005 " Il Tesoro " Super-Tuscan Italian -young- dry- red -with-
tremendous- promise- still is ON SPECIAL for $33.99, regularly $44.99. IT'S A
BEAUTY, beautiful six-pack cases, and perfect for meals and for gifts. This
100% Merlot is like having a really fine Pomerol from Bordeaux, France. The
bottle is raise/ embossed like the French bottles of Cheateuneuf-du-Pape :
classy. This bottle may be enjoyed now with a meal or to age longer and enjoy
then. Either way it makes a really special gift. Buy a six pack and we will
take 10% off the price and make the bottle cost $30.59. WHAT A DEAL!
A COUPLE OF " New " FRENCH Specials :
1) AOP Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2009( $17.99, 14.5% ) from DOMAINE COSTE
CHAUDE Madrigal is a youthful, robust, hearty mouthful of 70% Grenache and 30%
Syrah. What at a treat.
2) Cotes Du Ventoux 2008 ( $17.99, 14% alcohol by volume ) from the
DOMAINE FONDRECHE / from Fayard has just been given Bob Parker's blessings and
we were lucky to get a couple more cases before it disappeared./ from Fayard.
WE tasted some of this a few months ago down at Lavandou Provencale restaurant
when Bobby Kacher had his portfolio wine-tasting at the Washington Club on
Dupont Circle. It showed really well with Florence's cooking. What a treat. It
will do really well now with the heartier meals, stews and roasts and
cassoulets that we make.
3) Crozes-Hermitage " Le Millepertuis " 2007 ( great vintage ) northern
French wine made from 100% Syrah. Eon and I tried this with the president of
his own company, Jim Reeves. Thanks Jim, this is a really special Syrah that
may be enjoyed now with a meal or cellared for many years!
4) MARSANNY " Clos Du Roy " from the Cote D'Or red Burgundy region, this
young and fresh 2009 ( $34.99 ) is another real steal from Jim Reeves'
portfolio. It's exciting to have it as well as his Crozes-Hermitages. This is,
of course one of the great red burgundy values and made from 100% Pinot Noir by
law. It , too is a great food wine and really fine with turkey and goose and
even wild salmon and much, much more.
EON AND I ALSO DISCOVERED Some Dry Rose and Dry Whites that impressed us
no end :
ROSES :
1) BOXWOOD ESTATE 2010 " Topiary Rose " ( $17.99 ) is a really nice,
complex, sophisticated dry Bordeaux-style rose with a high concentration of
Cabernet Franc. It needs a meal : it's too flavorful to drink all by itself.
That's why if you want to sip the BOXWOOD VINEYARD dry rose you need to , you
need to try the " Boxwood " version for $17.99 that is smoother and silkier and
easier on the palate all by itself.
2) Cotes Du Rhone 2010 Harvest-Dentelle from the DOMAINE ROUGE-BLEU ( a
blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Carignan ) is also a softer easier-to-sip dry
southern French rose. It has a bit more color ( deeper -redder ) than the two
BOXWOOD Virginia, Middleburg dry roses. This is On Special now for $13.99 a
bottle.
3) Cotes-Du-Provence 2010 " Cuvee Tradition " dry biodynamic French rose (
AB certified . 13% alcohol by volume ) from the DOMAINE LES FOUQUES is On
Special for $13.99 a bottle now and showing beautifully! It's a perfect holiday
wine and for this unseasonably warm and balmy weather, too.
4) Dry Virginia rose and Raspberry wine from Leon, Virginia ( $12.99 ) and
made by the RAPIDAN RIVER winery that is now owned by PRINCE MICHEL. This is
quite a bit drier than one would expect, it's not a fruit bomb. As a matter of
fact with a salad using some raspberry vinegar this would be a real treat! You
all should try some. Cheers, it's fun, really it is.
WHITES:
1) Sparkling New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ( $18.99 ) from LAKE
CHALICE and called " Cracklin' Savie " showed really well this past Saturday
when we tasted it and we sold quite a bit when Paulette poured if for you all.
It's brand new and really tasty, fun and refreshing. I called it a great palate
cleanser. Works for me.
2) Cremant De Biurgogne sparkling " Pur Chardonnay " from France's
Burgundy region ( On Special for $14.99 ), made by BAILLY LAPIERRE is a classic
that we love to sell here and have for years. It's so flavorful and wonderful
and a real special treat, and what a value!
3) Chardonnay Estate-Grown from the Los Carneros region of California (
$14.99 ) is slightly-oaked from EGRET and twice now Eon and I have fallen in
love with it. Classy, tasty, bright, filled to the brim with promise : it's a "
keeper! "
APPLE CIDERS From FOGGY RIDGE :
New and Exciting! WE tasted 4 of them with Dawana at our Big-Theme
American Holiday Tasting.
1) Hard Cider " First Fruit " ( $21.99 ) was my favorite of the four. Just
like Goldilocks I found a place to hang my hat and relax and dream of
everything that awaits me.
2) Hard Cider Sweet Stayman " was simply just a bit too fruit-forward and
rich for me, a bit heavier, too on my tongue and palate. It's all personal
taste of course. We also have the " Serious " that is the dries and the most
tart and tangy. Not enough of a finish for me. They are all 750ml bottles and
all sell for $21.99 a bottle. The Handmade is a also quite nice. It comes in
500ml bottle, 7% alcohol and sells for $16.99 a bottle.
THREE BEERS FROM SANTOS : SALES!
1) APRICOT ALE unfiltered wheat ale from PYRAMID is On Special $5.99 a
six-pack of 12 ounce bottles.
2) ABITA LIte beer is On Special for $5.99 as well. What great deals
Santos!
3) JOCKAMO IPA from ABITA is also On Special for $5.99 a six-pack. Wow!

More Comments On Washington Post's Weekend Magazine Article : " World-Class Vineyards In Virginia. Really " & Dave McIntyre's " Along Virginia's Coast , The Grapevines Intertwine With Oysters. " Part Two, Read Part One, Too @ Chatwine
These are quick comments that I wish to share from my reading of both stories/ articles published this weekend in the Washington Post weekend editions. They are here to create some conversation and to bring up points that never seem to be mentioned in print.
I liked the idea of the story by Dana Milbank ( with an assist from Autumn Brewington ) and it raises many questions for me? What were her sources? Did she visit and of these wineries in Virginia herself? Does she know any of them? Has she ever drunk any of their wines?
As much as I appreciate articles supporting our local wineries that I am most proud of I still have to voice what I read and any of my concerns, at least to add a more complete picture for the reader and those that will we all hope go and visit the wineries and enjoy and learn about them, buy them and take them home to enjoy like times this week over Thanksgiving or Hanakkah or any other family gatherings and meals.
I would like to add some history to Dana Milbank's story and say that I think that some more current history would have been nice. True she mentioned Thomas Jefferson and as many important names in the business as she could, especially from wine-writers and Jay Youmans a Master Of Wine. I also saw a caption with a picture of a dog at RdV Vineyards during a sommelier meeting,. This raises the question for me : " where were the retailers? " Were they invited, included?
Just like in Dave McIntyre's article this morning I read : " Tom and Ann Gallivan of the Shooting Oyster Co., based one creek up in Franktown, VA., were shuttling a small group of shivering food journalists and bloggers who had come to learn about Eastern Shore oysters and what to drink with them." I read this and ask myself were any wine retailers invited to come? Wine retailers in their stores deal with customers all day long and make many suggestions of wine-food pairings all day long. I think that some of them would have been happy to have been included, at least to have known about this?
My point is that I read so many stories and articles, look at so many publications and I see hardly any mention of any wine store retailers that, in fact help more people with their beer, cider, liquor, liqueur and wine selections and food-pairings than any other group. They should be included , as well as consulted much more often than they seem to be.
Did Dana Milbank contact any wine retailers in writing this story? It would have been nice if she had, and to have mentioned that and them in her lovely article on the 20 wineries in Virginia making fine wines out of the more than 200 wineries now in Virginia. I see that she included a column : Tasting Notes on Top Virginia Wines " by Jennifer Knowles, wine director at the Inn at Little Washington, VA. Why was there not a similar list provided by a fine retailer like Mark Wessels, Wine Manager of MacArthur Beverages, or Doug Rosen of Arrow Wines & Spirits, brothers Rick and John Genderson Of Scheider's of Capital Hill, Cecile of the old Cecile's, Buddy Weitzman of Chevy Chase Wines & Spirits, me at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits, and many others?
In talking about the history leading up to this point where there are a number of darling wineries that seem to get all the attention ( I like this as well as credit is also given to the many other wineries in Virginia ), I think that a special mention should have been made of Chris Smith that back in the early eighties not only championed the wines of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania , he also went all the way up the East Coast to New Jersey, New York and Maine to name just a few of the states that I can remember as I type now. I enjoyed selling them all back then at Burka's Fine Wines when I was the wine-buyer. They all sold well and people would buy them on our recommendation and often come back for more. Thanks Chris, you really helped to get the ball rolling with your company Golden Crescent Wine Selections so many moons ago! Bravo to you.
I also want to comment on this next sentence or two : " But independent experts I spoke to generally agree that many Virginia wineries are still making wine that ranges from unremarkable to unpleasant. That helps to explain why all but about 3 percent of Virginia wine is consumed in Virginia - much of that by tourists at wine festivals and winery tastings. Who were these independent experts I would like to know? I view these two statements as rather harsh myself and that need much more elaboration than given as they only tell a part of a story. Truth be told there are many wines worldwide that are both unremarkable to unpleasant. This should not be a statement made just on Virginia wines that have made remarkable strides to making many really fine wines. Also, may wines worldwide are sold at the wineries themselves, especially wineries that make small quantities, and many of them do, at first go to festivals to sell and show their wines to become better-known. Nothing wrong with that, nothing negative, all part of the process.
This is Part-Two of my comments that I started yesterday and posted here at : chatwine. Please read Part One as well as this.
I am happy to see articles and stories like these so keep them coming. Please feel free to comment. All comments are welcome. I believe, always have strongly in the future of our local wines. I am happy to have them and sell them at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits. We sell them daily there.
I just want to have more information available to read and digest. Not just the most current and popular people, wines and wineries to promote. There are many that deserve mention and credit. They have worked together as an industry and made many strides. It was bound to happen with all this dedication and combined efforts and hard work.
And just as much as it's important to have many good sommeliers and Master of Wine ( there are fewer of those as it's not easy to become one ), writers and bloggers, it's also vital to have many wine retailers as they are the ones that in many one-on-one conversations with the wine-buying/ wine-drinking public have a chance to convey the message that Virginia, Maryland, and other local wines deserve their attention and support, as it is a mutually-beneficial relationship, and everyone gains and comes away the happier for it. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn Sunday morning, November 24th, 2013
I'm off to buy our Thanksgiving turkey for this thursday, happy Thanksgiving and Hanakkah to one and to all.

My Immediate Notes On Reading This Morning's Article : " How 20 Vineyards Are Making World-Class Vintages - World-Class Vineyards in Virginia.Really. " In The Washington Post Weekend Magazine 11/23/13
These are just some quick observations that I would like to share and add to this article to create more conversation and permit more information into this picture of Virginia wine-making that really got off the ground with FARFELU, GABRIELLE RAUSSE, INGLESIDE, MEREDITH, PIEDMONT, OASIS, NAKED MOUNTAIN, RAPIDAN, WILLIAMSBURG , PRINCE MICHEL, SWEDENBOURG, LINDEN and others that I cannot recall as I type now. We need to give all these wineries credit for making it possible for the " new " darlings that are mentioned above to make all their advancements and accomplishments that are well-deserved.
Today there are many that are contributing as well that have not been mentioned, as they are also including other grape varietals besides the red Bordeaux grape varietals to the equation. But before I mention some of those I would like to say that the one red Bordeaux grape varietal that I think deserves a lot of attention is the Petit Verdot and I would have liked to see more written and discussion on it.
Now we have vineyards that are also also pushing the boundaries with older hybrids like the Chambourcin dry red from FABBIOLI where owner Doug is making a delightful version that will complement many a meal and occasion. he's also working with the Tannat grape from Madiran and making a massive and complex and dark-fleshed version that can take some real aging in the cellar before drinking.
I am shocked and saddened to not see any mention here at all of Gabrielle Rausse that is indeed a pioneer of Virginia winemaking and deserves to be mentioned in each and every article written on Virginia wine. He started way back I believe in April 1976 was it, is that possible, when there was just the FARFELU winery? Gabrielle makes such food-friendly wines with balance, charm, personality and finesse. He uses also the grapes from Italy from where he came like the Nebbiolo and the Refosco grape and gives the originals in Italy a real run for their money. He's pretty amazing, humble, knowledgeable , willing to share and teach what he knows, a gardener, too that has tended Thomas Jefferson's Monticello gardens. In short he's pretty amazing.
I also applaud BOXWOOD for sticking to their guns and continuing to produce fine, age-worthy-style Bordeaux reds that will slowly grow into their own fine wines as the vines age and start to produce top-flight wines. You cannot rush them, they need food, they need to be included here as they are taking the pains and the time to make great red wine and not compromise now till they get where they surely will because with the vines that viticulture guru Lucie Morton has planted for them - as she also has done for BOORDY in Maryland - they will arrive grandly with the necessary time that it takes.
My point : let's not be too quick to judge and just include the darling wineries ( I know I will get a lot of flack for this but I believe strongly in many more wineries than the few here ) than just the 20 mentioned already in this article that does come at a great time and create interest and conversation. Bravo to Dana Milbank for that.
Virginia is also making really fine whites and the Viognier grape variety that hails from France's Condrieu region on the northern Rhone valley and brought to international attention by the HORTEN winery should also be mentioned.
Virginia is also making great strides with the Norton grape variety where they got clippings from STONE HILL in Missouri and have made some fine hearty, robust, intense, dark, inky, herbal dry reds like those from CHRYSALIS , just to name one.
Michael Shaps has done some interesting blending as well as a consultant to young wineries like DEMOCRACY where he has used the Pinotage grape variety from South Africa to great effect in blends. And his 3-liter box wines that he sells under his second label WINEWORKS is pretty amazing in white and red for under $40 a box! Wave of the everyday, affordable, enjoyable future baby! Let's not be snobs.
Other wineries that are making great inroads : CHESTER GAP, PEARMUND, VERITAS, and THIBAUT-JANISON for sparkling wines. There's also COOPER VINEYARDS the winery that makes " Noche " , a chocolate-infused dark red, delicious Norton red wine that everyone loves.
In short, Virginia is making great strides on many fronts and deserves a whole lot of praise and attention on so many of them. I've got to go to work to sell more Virginia and local wines for our Thanksgiving. Remember, this is just a chat, just the start of a conversation. Please comment. Have a great Thanksgiving 2013 and drink Virginia and local wines when you can. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 11/23/13

Fun! Fun! Fun! I just walk into the store and Louis that works here tells me that a customer in the back of the store is looking for some Pinot. I walk up to her, passing Hans our regular customer and Louis and ask her if I can help her? Mary, that's her name, tells me she's looking for some pinot s[elled : " Pineau " and do we have any? I turn back to where Hans and Louis are standing and I say : " Yes we have some Pineau des Charentes ", and I go to reach for the bottle of PIERRE FERRAND, $31.99 from France's Cognac region. I picked grapes there for a harvest back in 1979 I believe it was!?! Anyway, I asked Mary how many stores she had been in, and she said that her friend on Capitol Hill had inquired and they told her to Google it and find the distributor. Mary was so happy to find it, her expression and smile said it all! I am thrilled we have it as Mary and her four other friends go on yearly hikes there in Cognac and every evening stop and have a glass or more of Pineau des Charentes. They are local from D.C. and are getting together this Saturday to celebrate and need to have some Pineau des Charentes. I told Mary about the Beaujolais Nouveau that's available today. I got a bottle of the MANOIR DU CARRA Beaujiolais Villages 2013, $10.99 a bottle, and showed it to her. She said : " No French, only Spanish " could she speak! She was still smiling broadly. She had to call her friend to to tell her the " good news "! What fun, everyone happy and she bought the bottle of MANOIR DU CARRA 2013 Beaujolais Villages Nouveau to enjoy this Saturday with the other four hikers this Saturday. What fun, what timing, what a great evening that will be for their reunion here in Washington D.C. with MANOIR DU CARRA Beaujolais Villages Nouveau and some also excellent Pineau des Charentes from PIERRE FERRAND! Frenchman Antoine With Domaine ROUX in Burgundy, France Tastes 12 Assorted Reds & White Of The Domaine @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 Including The GRand White 2011 Saint-Aubin & The Grand Chambolle-Musigny 2009 Red! Bravo, Merci Antoine Et Damien!
This was a great tasting this early afternoon with FrenchmaN Antoine of DOMAINE ROUX in Burgundy, France - and this FABulous 2011 dry white Saint-Aubin which had so much clarity, personality, depth and longevity in the finish : it was quite amazing and really impressed Michel Dumas and me ( Anthony Quinn ).
Our local rep Damien LeHoux brought him earlier and they had twelve os so bottles for us to try starting with a white Bourgogne Blanc 2011- nice finesse and balance and lighter , clasic flavors,...
a Puligny-Montrachet that was just too intense and needed both food and time,
... an amazing Meursault 2011 that was bolder and less-defined, broader, too,
... and even more amazing 2011 Chassagne Montrachet that spoke volumes - what a monument, what a tower of flavors, still so young, needing food but wonderful ... - all white wines, ...
and then a closed, tight Mercurey Chalonaise red as we got into the Pinot Noir wines ...,
an open and fuller-fleshier Santenay 2011, ... I liked it -
a really impressive Vougeot with body, weight, character and good toasty robust elements, ...
and a sublime, elegant, polished, refined - DIVINE Chambolle Musigny that quite literally, along with the white Saint-Aubin blew me away! What a grand treat, what an experience : all the bottles opened there for us : made me feel quite special. merci Damien et AntoinE! AnthonY ( TONY ) Quinn Wednesday, November 20th, 2013
