Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
SO MUCH TO MENTION HERE, the Ukraine , the Malaysian flight that disappeared,
the white blanket of snow, the mini-version of Pasteria Floriana coming to the PULPO
location- a ' pop-up ' for a moment - what will eventually occupy the PULPO
location, whether Lavandou will move back, will there be a Starbucks moving into
the DINO location here on our corner of the block, why the First Lady dined on
14th Street recently and not here ( this is all on me this thought, having read
about her meal in the Washington Post's Style section yesterday )?!?
WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE Santos back from his vacation. We are also happy to have
Joe helping us out in the evenings. We are also pleased to announce that we will
be tasting ' Joe's Selections ' this Friday from 5-8PM. What will Joe choose to
taste with us? I have a couple of ideas but will let it all be a surprise for
later.
HEARD FROM RAVI yesterday, he called me at home and we chatted for awhile. He
had a great trip to India and will come by the store soon to say ' hello ' to us
all. More on that as we learn more. I can't wait to see him all rested and
smiling and relaxed I hope.
SO MANY COMPLEMENTS on the ' new look ' of the store. Everyone comes in and
stops just past our tasting table in the middle of the floor and looks around
them and takes it all in, often exclaiming how much they like THE ' new look. '
It's pretty impressive. Michel and Malkit worked hard on it with Luis and Santos
and they moved a ' mountain of wine ' to make it all happen one Monday. I
cleaned up the scattered pieces of wine in our shopping carts and tidied-up,
organized and finished it up and : VOILA : ,ore space to enjoy looking and
thinking about our selections and what you might actually like to buy and enjoy.
SO : Yes, we all have lots going on and many things from the outside pushing in
on us and we have to try and stay focused, positive, healthy and productive - no
easy feat really as so many more questions are always presented than answered.
Just try and answer the most important ones for each of you like :
' What makes you happy / keeps you happy? '
GO FOR IT! That's what we say, just do what brings you some joy, relax and keep
it together.
FROM SANTOS we have :
1) ' Voodoo Doughnut ' , a chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale from ROGUE
( On Special for $14.99 a 1 Pt. 9.4 Fl. BRIGHT PINK Pepto-Bismal-Looking color ,
5.3% alcohol-by-volume, Newport, Oregon, 97365 ) : with no chemicals, additives
or preservatives - " dedicated to Tres & Cat Daddy, the rogues of voodoo
doughnuts. " TRY SOME, get past the color of the bottle!
2) ' Apex ' Special IPA from the BEAR REPUBLIC ( On Special for $8.99 a 1
Pt. 6 Fl. Oz bottle, 8.95% alcohol by volume, from BEAR REPUBLIC Brewing from
Cloverdale, California ) :
" APEX : The highest point, the culmination or climax. In racing, the apex of
the turn is approached differently as conditions dictate, but always with a
forward looking mindset. This beer is the culmination of years of brewing and
drinking hop forward IPAs. We reserve the right to move forward, to advance the
style to the next Apex."
SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN to me, I like it. Try some.
3) ' The Citizen ' from DC BRAU was just tasted here along with the others this
past weekend by our local rep Jake from DC BRAU. It was quite the success, it
was. I mention ' The Citizen ' only because it was my favorite and I was happy
to re-taste it , as well as the others.
My general comment is that I was very pleased to see- taste that, to me, the
beers are all more refined and less heavy and gutsy than I remember them. They
have more polish, more finesse than before. I like that, I like that a lot!
'The Citizen ' is a Belgina-Style Pale and it was smoother, less tart, less
hoppy, less tangy and sharp than the others. I could sip and enjoy it, maybe
even two-twelve-ounce cans, and that's BIG for me! ( $ , 12-fluid-ounce-cans,
%7 alcohol by volume, go to : www.dcbrau.com for more info. local District of
Columbia beer ) :
" In 1963, the citizens of Washington DC won the right to vote for the President
and the Vice-President of the United States with the ratification of the 23rd
amendment to the Constitution."
HOT OFF THE PRESSES :
JUST TASTED the ' new ' Miller product :
CIDER S & F Hard Cider Made Strong ( $6.99 a 4-pack of 1 Pt. 16 Fl. Oz cans
) : " in the fine tradition of making things strong. Built from apples. " It's
tasty, smooth, easy-to-sip and enjoy, not heavy, just enough taste, good color,
too, Try it. Santos just ordered some to come here this week.

LIQUEUR -
1) Chrysanthemum & Honey Liqueur from KOVAL Inc ( $26.99 a 375ml bottle,

make their various cocktails. No time to wait, start now, we can help. It does
throw some sediment which is natural and perfectly fine.
2) Ginger Liqueuer from KOVAL INC. ( $26.99 a 375ml bottle, 20% alcohol by
volume, Organic USDA, Kosher, too , from Chicago, Illinois ) : What cocktails

perfectly natural. Cheers!
LIQUOR -
1) ' Grande Fine ' Tequila from METAXA ( $48.99 a 750ml bottle, The Greek
Spirit ) : " Carefully matured wine distillates produce a uniquely mellow
flavour and a delicately velvety bouquet. Ancient Greek ornaments inspired the
floral pattern on this unique porcelain decanter."
WHEN SOTIRIS Bafitis came here earlier he saw the bottle sitting here in the
office and he immediately came alive and exclaimed that this was very special,
very good indeed. Sotiris should know. I do not have to hear any more, just to
pour a glass now and enjoy it in his company after a satisfying meal with Greek
wine!
SPEAKING OF WHICH ...
IT WAS NICE TO see Sotiris Bafitis that came to check on when he could send us
his Greek dry rose that we love that will be On Special for $9.99, down from

2014, Friday from 5-8PM. That will be great as we love promoting his selection
of ' super ' dry reds and whites with an occasional rose, too. Mark your
calendars now and be ready.
SOTIRIS just shared some kind words with me : " It's a great little store. It
chugs along. It does what it needs to do. " Thanks Sotiris, we try hard, we
really do. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 3/18/2014

bottle, kosher, Fall 2012 Harvest ) : Made in California from two types of
Spanish olives : a ' Must-Have ! ' Come and get some. We sell it because Bill
Sanders lived here in Cleveland Park for years and it's excellent and fresh,
too!
WINE :
1) Maragda Rosa 2012 Spanish dry rose Emporada Rose from MAS LLUNES ( On
Special for $7.99 , 13.5% alcohol by volume, Garriguella, Spain ) : 72%
Garnacha, 28% Syrah - I just tasted this on the weekend with my wife : deep,
rich, darker color, a touch of spritz, soft and smooth - bright and fleshy on
the palate, some nice strawberry-cheery fruit taste. Lovely! GREAT VALUE.
2) Lebanese Dry White Blend of 35% Clairette , 35% Obeidi, 15% Sauvignon
Blanc and 15% Chardonnay from MASSAYA, 2012, Liban, Vallee de la Bekaa ( $13.99
a bottle,13.5% alcohol by volume, ) : a fine food wine - flavorful, powerful,
some real backbone and taste that needs the food to flesh it all out.
3) Lebanese Classic dry red blend of 60% Cinsault, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon
and 20% Strah from Liban, Vallee de la Bekaa from MASSAYA ( $13.99 a 750ml
bottle, 14.5% alcohol by volume, go to : www.massaya.com for more info ) :
medium-bodied, good flavor and spice and mouth-feel : better with a meal than
all by itself!
4) ' Agrina ' 2012 Portguiser dry Serbian red ( $13.99 a bottle, 13%
alcohol by volume , from Fruska Gora, Serbia ) : Alex tasted it out here this
past weekend : it's soft, round, smooth, fleshy, pleasing and so easy to enjoy
all on it's own. Lighter-bodied, needs no food : so pleasant, will be great as
the warm weather hits us soon enough!
5) Muscadet 2012 Melon de Bourgogne dry Loire Valley white, Muscadet Sevre
& Maine sur lie ( $17.99 , Henri Poiron , from the DOMAINE des QUATRE ROUTES ) :
I like the fullness, the richness, the real good ' grip ' and ' mouth-feel '. It
hangs well, hangs on, doesn't disappear quickly : great with shellfish and
salads, goat's cheese ). Chuck tasted it here this past weekend. Many of you
liked it and bought it. Thanks Chuck.
6) A Red French Red Rhone blend of Grenache, some Merlot and a splash of
Viognier : the BOSQUET Du Sanglier/Wild Boar , 2012, Vin de Pays de Vaucluse,
the southern Rhone valley ( $17.99, 14% alcohol by volume ) : " It's bright and
fleshy and forward, medium-bodied, nice to sip, some white pepper and spice,
great berry fruit, so pleasing to drink with or without food,
medium-to-light-bodied. Nice. Chuck tasted it , too and again, many of you liked
it and bought it.
7) Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2011 ( $32.99 , 13.9% alcohol by volume
, est. 1979, Cloverdale, CA. go to : www.fritzwinery.com for more details ) :
It's rich and full and creamy and really nicely balanced. It's a real treat,
really focused, everything in place, nice harmony and so pleasing with or
without food. I liked it a lot.
8) Svb Rosa dry red Sebian blend of 60% Prokupac and 40% Cabernet
Sauvignon , 2007 : Sub Rosa is Latin for : secrecy/ confidentiality ( $42.99 a
bottle, ) : the Cabernet Sauvignon flavors come out and make this wine that is
still quite young a real food wine. It's hearty and chunky and gutsy and very
flavorful and really needs the flavors in the food to soften the taste so that
your palate can more easily wrap around this Prokupac and Cabernet Sauvignon
marriage of flavors. Cheers. Alex poured this here also this weekend. Alex is
the President of the Balkan Wine Project and we love working with him as his
wines really are authentic and flavorful and represent the areas from which they
come. Cheers.

THANKS AGAIN for everything. We appreciate everything. Cathy that has lived here
now for three years and came from Adams Morgan came to get her TANQUERAY gin and
we spoke in length about Washington D.C., the various neighborhoods, and all the
struggles they are going through to stay well and healthy and active and unique,
and not just like any other neighborhood. We spoke of the 14th street corridor
and how it seems to be the ' darling ' now.
CATHY POINTED OUT how that hurt all the other neighborhoods. She wants to
support our Cleveland Park neighborhood and has already seen it change in the
last three years. She likes our neighborhood and very much wants to buy here. I
thanked her for sharing her thoughts and concerns with us. It helps to hear this
from our customers.
WE ARE THRILLED to have Cathy as a part of our neighborhood. Cheers, stay warm
and dry with this blanket of white snow that is slow to melt and sure is pretty,
too! TONY
BY THE WAY ... as I drove to work this morning I saw a white sleeping mattress
on top of a FORD mini-station wagon, a pale pastel green-blue color, and I
thought : " Brrrrr! ". I looked closer, it was the white snow from two evening's
ago and it still looked beautiful and pristine and it made me smile broadly as I
passed it on my right and headed here to work.
Friday wine tasting with Joe... the new guy! At the beginning of this month I
found myself fortunate enough to wind up in cahoots with the good folks at
Cleveland Park Wines. I hope to live up to their standards in providing you with
the excellent (often eclectic and eccentric) service and selection you’ve
already come to know and love. The plan for this Friday is to open 4 or 5 wines
that I find compelling and worthy of attention to give you an idea where my
palate and preferences for wine leans with the goal of learning where your
palate and preferences are.
I know my tastes will fall in line with some of yours but not with others, but
that’s ok. That’s what this wine business is all about, learning what we do and
don’t like and making more informed choices in the future.
I hope that you will join us with an open mind, because I believe through every
wine you taste, whether you fall in love with it or can’t stand the juice, each
taste ultimately points you towards the wines you will love.
As I go through our wines I’m overwhelmed with options of what to pour; perhaps
it will be classic Rioja, maybe a high-toned white from Austria or Germany,
Zinfandel from California, or the food friendly reds of northern Italy. No
matter what I end up choosing, I look forward to meeting you and tasting wine
with you.
-Joe
WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is the store email I wrote back in mid March 2012, read and
enjoy it and see how things have changed / stayed the same. If you are
interested in anything here please check with us for current availability and
pricing. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 3/18/2014
LOOKS LIKE SPRING, FEELS LIKE SPRING, the cold and breezy springs we know and
expect except for all the unseasonably beautiful and warm weather we have
enjoyed for the last two weeks. Feels like a tease to have the temperatures drop
last night to just below freezing in some places? But then we all know we cannot
second-guess or beat Nature at it's own plan and that there is no reason to try.
JUST ENJOY WHAT WE HAVE, and today on this Tuesday March 27th, 2012 we have
some really clear and baby-blue beautiful skies with a very healthy breeze and
some bright but faint sunshine. I love it.
THE DRIVE TO WORK was beautiful as there were so many delicate soft green pastel
colors with some amazing violets and lavenders on the small trees from my
neighborhood all the way down Route 50 and into Washington D.C. and the Rock
Creek Parkway and up Cathedral Avenue and onto Connecticut Avenue and here to
work in beautiful Cleveland Park. I enjoyed my ride very much this morning,
really I did as I gathered many of my thoughts as I always get ready to start my
work week one day after most of you.
THE WEEKEND HERE was quite nice as many of you stopped by on Saturday to meet
and taste with energetic Kiwi Stu Devine of Pacific Prime Wines that works with
Eric Platt here to promote and sell ( and taste ) the wines of SIEFRIED ( we
tasted the Nelson 2011 touch off-dry Riesling, $20.99 ), OLD COACH ROAD ( we
tasted the 2010 Pinot Noir from Nelson, $21.99 - soft and delicate and lovely
lighter-style Pinot; as well as the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc from Nelson, $16.99 ) ,
and the LAKE CHALICE Cracklin' Savie Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, $18.99.
THEY ALL SOLD WELL : the Cracklin' Savie because of it's unique sparkle and
freshness flew out of our front door. Everyone loved it and the others did quite
well, too. Stu signed many of the bottles as gifts and he talked Cricket the
game and wine and everyone pretty much got immediately sucked up into the energy
and the enthusiasm and the excitement of the moment.
IT WAS EDUCATIONAL & FUN and Stu had his big map of South Africa here to show
everyone where all these properties were. We had a young lady that had spent
five weeks there as a younger girl in school and she went with her class and as
she looked at the map she showed us where she had been and shared lovely
stories, too with us all. I was impressed, I bet Stu was impressed, too.
THANKS STU. ALL the Pacific Prime Wines are here for any of you wanting a
bottle or two to check out yourselves. We already have an order for more
Cracklin' Savie as we are almost out now. For technical info go to :
www.pacificprimewines.co.nz. Cheers.
YESTERDAY ON MY DAY-OFF I went to the " new Hamilton Live " restaurant here in
Washington D.C. that is owned by the Clyde's Group for the Country Vintner "
Rising " Trade Show 2012 " Illuminating The Fine Wine Market ". David Moran, the
general manager that I have known forever came up to me immediately to welcome
me. Thanks David, it was great to see you. I like the new space, especially the
vintage black-and-white photographs of Bob Dylan ( the only copy you tell me
made from the original negative ) , Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. That was
special seeing those on the walls.
I GOT TO SEE SEVERAL OWNERS/ WINEMAKERS from the Bartholomew Broadbent
selections : MIke Warwick of WARWICK, Stellenbosch and VILAFONTE, too ; A.A.
BADENHORST Family Wines ( with Adi Badenhorst the owner-winemaker ) and Miguel
Roquette, director of the QUINTA DO CRASTO Douro, Portguese wines. I was pleased
with many of the wines I tasted and we have some of them in stock now :
-From Mike Radcliffe at the WARWICK we have the 2009 " Professor Black "
Sauvignon Blanc ( $18.99 ) that I tasted first. Great finesse, balance of power
and flavor and never over-stated. It's a real treat to enjoy now in this colder
weather all of a sudden. I liked many of the reds, too : I will get back " The
First Lady " 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch ( $16.99 ).
-Also from Mike Radcliffe we have his Series " M " 2006 ( $34.99 ) that he
makes with Zelma Long ( a blend of 39% Merlot, 15% Malbec, 43% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 3$ Cabernet Franc ). It was the last wine I tasted with Mike and
it's bolder, deeper-skinned and much more fleshy - more modern in style - than
the Series " C " 2006 that I found much more ready to drink immediately. I told
this to Mike and he smiled and told me that I could not take it back, pretty
strong words or something like that he said.
I will ask Lisa Norris and Arielle Monaco of the Country Vintners about
getting some of the Series " C ". For the moment I have the Series " M " and
with a meal now in this 30 plus degree cold it will be fabulous! Come get some
quick : we only have ten or so bottles left of this 2006 vintage. These wines
need some bottle age and in another 2-5 years this 2006 Series " M " will be
pretty fantastic for those patient enough to buy and put away and wait. For more
technical info go to : www.vilafonte.com.
- From Miguel Roquette of the QUINTA DO CRASTO Douro, Portuguese property I
loved all three reds that I tasted. They were all fruit-forward, balanced and
polished and a delight to drink because the fruit was always front-and-center
and that is essential and something that many seem to have forgotten today.
We have in stock the CRASTO D.O.C. 2009 ( $16.99 ) that is bright, round,
full on the palate, smooth and bright and so smooth and an absolute delight to
drink now with or without food. I loved it - immediately it pleased and
impressed me and I told Miguel this right away. It's a blend of 35% Tinta Roriz,
25% Tinta Barroca, 25% Touriga Franca and 15% Touriga Nacional. All made from
estate-grown grapes, chill slightly. For more technocal info go to :
www.quintadocrasto.pt.
It was nice to get a chance to talk with Bartholomew Broadbent and to
mention that we also carried his Madeiras that were just recently written up in
the Washington Post wine-article of Dave McIntyre and found in the Food section.
Yes, I still like to read the paper and hold it in my hands.
1) BROADBENT Madeira Reserve 5 Years Old ( $26.99).
2) BROADBENT Fine Rich Sweet Madeira ( $18.99 )
3) BROADBENT Rainwater Medium-Dry Madeira ( $18.99 )
4) BROADBENT Malmsey Sweet 10 Years Old ( $53.99 ).
I ALSO RAN INTO the two daughters of owner Florence Devilliers of our own
Lavandou Provencal French ( contact@lavandoudc.com ) restaurant down the block
from us. They were there tasting with my old friend and Aussie wine associate of
WEST CAPE HOWE - western Australia - and his own VINACEOUS Aussie wine
selections ( I loved the Grenache-Shiraz dry red blend the best ) that we sell
here all the time.
I DID NOT RECOGNIZE THEM but they recognized me when they saw my name tag :
Anthony Quinn at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits. That was a great
chance-meeting. Every night that I pass by Lavandou these days the restaurant
seems packed and that is great for them and for the community. Like the old days
when they opened and there was only half the restaurant that they enjoy today (
they took over the old barber shoppe that was next door ). They are still open
for lunch.
REMEMBER THAT AT LAVANDOU on Monday night's you can take your own bottle that
you purchase here before you go and there will be no corkage fee for opening it.
Remember to tip the waiter extra because of this. You may also do the same thing
tonight, on Tuesday nights when you go to DINO as they have no corkage fee on
Tuesday's. Cheers.
BUT HEY, I HAVE TO GIVE SPACE & TIME to both beer and liquor, liqueur and
ciders and bottled waters, too. These walls here and floor displays are filled
with may selections that also include many biodynamic, organic, vegan, kosher
and gluten-free, sometimes really low alcohol ( a half of one-percent ) in both
beers and wines. People are interested in everything and we have lots of bits
and pieces of all of this and those are growing, too as your interest and demand
grows. We are a reflection of your wants, needs and interests.
WE WANT YOU TO COME and we will take you on a guided tour of all our specialty
categories that includes the biodynamic, the organic, the gluten-free and the
vegan. We have too many to list them all here but believe me when I tell you we
have added many more including the PURATO selections of Sicily just recently
from Vias Imports ( $14.99 a bottle ) for the dry red and the dry white. They
also do everything to GO GREEN as well.

IF YOU HAPPEN TO VISIT ALEXANDRIA and OLD TOWNE, Virginia check out the two
cheese and charcuterie selections of the CHEESETIQUE stores : 1) Cheesetique in
Del Ray ( with Charlotte Devilliers ) and 2) Cheesetique in Shirlington with
Maud Devilliers. Remember that excellent movie : " Harold and Maude "? I loved
it, so quirky and fun. Florence remembered it but neither Charlotte or Maud had
seen it. I recommended yesterday that they both rent and watch it.
CHEERS and THANKS for everything. We are here because of you, your belief
and great support of us. For that we thanks you from the depths of our hearts.
Cheers and enjoy this beautiful afternoon and come to see us now before it all
turns to rain later tonight or tomorrow? TONY
P.S. To David Moran : Thanks for smiling at me yesterday and saying : " The
Mighty Quinn ! " I appreciated that very much. The song was written by Bob Dylan
and you have that great photo of him that we talked about yesterday afternoon at
Hamilton Live. Cheers. TONY
