Putting The Pieces Together About FARNESE Vini Italian Wines Of Ortona ( CH ) , Past & Present As Filtered In Stories By Anthony Quinn ( Me ) , Monday May 13th, 2013 : Cheers Camillo De Iuliis!
/// ... Years ago, actually on June 5th, 2007 Camillo De Iuliis ( President ) of FARNESE Vini S.r.1. ( Sede legale : Via dei Bastioni Castello Cardora 66026 OTTONA ( CH ) - Italy Tel. 085 /9067388 r.a. - Fax 085/9067389 , www.farnese-vini.com came to Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits in Northwest, Washington D.C., 20008, Tel:202-363-4265 and tasted his current releases available through Neil Empson Imports. I am sure that Franceen Rosensweig brought him to us as she always did when an owner or a winemaker would visit Washington D.C. We / I , of course LOVE this and am thrilled that for many of those in the business that we are a " destination place ", and that a visit to us is important. Thank you Franceen, thank you all for this. I do treasure this. /// ...
Camillo wrote : " Meeting you was a great pleasure. Thanks you for having Farnese wines in your Emporium " . signed C. De Iuliis.
/// ...
I haver this story as well as the one from " The Rocks " , at the Irish Hotel / Pub in Sidney, Australia to add to this, as well as our current one with who I refer to now affectionately as the " Godfather " of wines from the lesser-known United States, Jim Stutsman when he requested some of the FARNESE dry white Trebbiano. He had just had some in a local restaurant with his friends and they all thought it was a really good bottle of wine and that it also represented a great value, too. /// ...
Here I will include some of the pictures of my trip to Australia in 2005 I think it was to perhaps a picture or two of Jim Stutsman. I do not know if I have any of Camillo. I will look and will include them if I have them of his visit to see us on June 5th, 2007. /// ... ///
...
... /// ... /// The gentleman pictured here above with the big grin on his face in The Rocks, Sidney, Australia is the gentleman that was selling the FARNESE Italian wines in Australia. I never asked him what his territory was? Too bad. I think I have a business card from him and I made a serious effort to find it a couple of night's ago. I will continue my search because I would love to include that information here. I was impressed with his enthusiasm for the FARNESE wines as we sat there tasting some of the " specialty Aussie " wines that our gracious host was sharing with us there with our lunch. I was such a special moment for Chris Pigott of the Country Vintner and me of Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits here at 3423 Connecticut Avenue Northwest, Washington D.C. 20008 in the Cleveland Park neighborhood. I must have thought of or mentioned Franceen Kahng that worked for Palm Bay Imports and sold me the FARNESE wines at the time? You never know? It all ties together and comes together at the oddest times. I love this about life and wine and people and art : you just never know?!? There's always the wonderful chance of a serendipitous moment and I must say that I live for that. I really do. So, even though we were not drinking the FARNESE Italian wines here in Sidney, Australia they were still on the stage with us. Nice.
...
... ///
I will include a picture here soon of Jim Stutsman that has recently brought the FARNESE wines back into my attention. I will call our Palm Bay importer rep and ask him to pull some fresh and current samples of the wines for Michel Dumas and me ( Anthony Quinn ) to try. That will be a welcome event for me as it has been awhile since I tried them. I am thinking that the last taste I had was of some of the Pecorino dry white? So Arielle Monaco of the Country Vintner, you can expect a call from me, perhaps even later today when I get to work this Saturday, May 25th, 2013 as we start our Memorial Day Weekend here in northern Virginia and Washington D.C. and all over our country of course. Cheers, stay tuned for more and enjoy your first dip in the pool or the oceans and lakes as it's official now : time to enjoy some more FARNESE Italian wines and the water, too. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn PS : listen to my wine podcast with Malcolm Riddle. Barton Seaver That I Met In Washington D.C. 2012 : Realizing How Much I Missed Or Did Not Pick Up On Or Put Two & Two Together : Startling & Yet Marvelous, Too! Cheers Barton! IRON HORSE'S Sparkling CA." I Am Giving / I Am The Ocean ", & FROMM'S LA STRADA'S Kiwi Pinot Noir 2004!
... ( I borrowed this picture above just now from the IRON HORSE Facebook page, hope you all do not mind? Thanks, TONY ) ...
I am not quite sure how I missed putting so many details together to see a bigger picture with Barton Seaver?!? Did I miss the signals, the words, the nuances, the implications, the spoken details?!? Was I that much in my own thoughts!?! Was I simply not seeing how all the times that we had spent talking about wine and the " special release " of 800 cases from IRONHORSE Winery and their sparkling wines fit together with the National Geographic here in Washington D.C. and Barton that I was seeing off and on for several months?!? Some of all the above. I am guilty for my part : I readily admit my part and all that I obviously missed putting together as I did here at my home in northern Virginia last night. ... ...
So here it all goes. Let me tell you about the past month and last night in particular. Fasten your seat belt, let's go for a ride, for a fun adventure. ... ...
I just read this when I googled Barton's name : " Barton Seaver is on a mission to retore our relationship with the ocean, the land, and with each other - through dinner. he believes food is a crucial way ... " You have to google him and finish reading this after you read this blog of mine. ... ...
... ... ( the picture above looks down Cleveland Park, our Northwest , 20008 neighborhood ... cheers, that's towards Chevy Chase Circle, Maryland ) .. . ...
It was great to talk with Barton on the few occasions that we chatted, a lot in 2012 when he was here. He would come and we would talk wine much of the time. That's how the conversation got to IRONHORSE California sparkling wine.
... ...
... ... ( Maps are so important, imagine the bodies of water around these countries like that of Italy that this cute little girl above is studying pretty intently . ) ... ...
... ... ( We also spoke about the LA STRADA New Zealand vineyard and their excellent 2004 Pinot Noir ; both Barton and I liked it a whole lot. ) ... ...
... ... ( These two pictures above are not mine and ones I found on the internet on Facebook and share them as they fit here and , I believe add to this story . Cheers. ) ... ...
I miss a whole lot, my mind races too quickly, I concentrate on certain things that penetrate and then I race on and a lot of the time I do not actually finish the thought or my full realization of what has actually been said or just happened. With Barton this is definitely the case. I am sorry for that. here we were having an amazing conversation about IRON HORSE and the National Geographic and this younger man, Barton Seaver standing next to me and I did not ask for him to fill in all the details for me about this amazing story? Barton, please do comment here if you see and read this blog of mine. It would be great to have you fill in the blanks for me. Let me fill in mine as to how we got to this point-in-time last year and how I happened to have this bottle in our cold box which Barton decided to purchase? Where was my trusty camera? Why did I not have it? Why did I not think to take a picture of Barton holding the bottle? What was I thinking or not thinking as the case clearly was at the time?!? Too bad, that would have been wonderful to include here : sort of a bit of closure, sort of the completion of a fascinating circle, and all unfolding here between the two of us in Cleveland Park, Northwest Washington D.C. ( not far from either the National Zoo or from the National Geographic! ). ... ... It all makes me smile now as I put all this together. ... ... And this whole blog idea came to me this past weekend as I thought about my good friends and customers Ed and Jinny Fleischman of the cooking meals/dinner : " Company's Coming " in Cleveland Park chez eux who's daughter is getting married and serving IRON HORSE'S " Wedding Cuvee "! Small world, wonderful world, wonderful slices of it come to bloom and to light right here in our very own Cleveland Park Northwest D.C., 20008 neighborhood, too. ...
... But let me get back to my story leading up to this point. ... These pictures that I have added, the last three are rather fun and whimsical and I hope you enjoy them : colorful, bright, filled with hope and promise and good cheer and the ocean, too ... It started a very long time ago for me. But the short story is that my manager/ rep for IRON HORSE, Mike that worked for Washington Wholesalers here in Washington D.C. brought me a taste one day , wanting me to pour and support this special cuvee of theirs in both the store and also at our annual Big-Theme Sparkling Wine/Champagne/ Bubbly December event. I liked the idea when it was presented to me, I LOVED the elegance and the finesse, the polish, the brightness and the silkiness of it, too when Mike tasted me on it. Thank you MIke, you got this ball rolling for us and I have been very happy to bring light to an essential cause for us all to support, one that Barton Seaver helped bring back , front and center on our stage, our platform here in Washington D.C. I will post this now and continue it later as I have time. Enjoy it as it is now. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn Thursday, May 9th, 2013 here in northern Virginia.
... ...
I called yesterday to talk with Roberta our local rep at Washington Wholesalers about the IRON HORSE sparkling wines, I needed to place my order for a case of the " Wedding Cuvee " for the wedding coming up soon, as well as to check on the availability of the " I Am Giving , I Am The Ocean "? Roberta was going to check, she was not sure that any was in stock at this point. Too bad, I would like to order some , a six-pack for our shelves. We will see. ... ... ... ...

SO : to get back to my story with Barton. Here was someone that was engaging me in conversation and somehow we were talking about sparkling wines and the name IRON HORSE came up in California? We were probably both talking a mile-a-minute and it was busy and there were lots of people around us and the name : " I Am Giving / I Am The Ocean " came up. Barton might have been the one to mention it? I cannot remember now. It was not that long ago. I should remember, but I don't. Oh well. Anyway, I told him I had sold it, that I still had some. He was surprised, perhaps startled, pleased : all of the above? I told him I still had some. .
.. ... NOT FINDING IT on the shelf I looked in the cold box and was able to find one last bottle. He told me as I was doing this that her had helped to make it, to promote it, ( who was this that I was talking to?!? I had no real idea? Yet here he was, out of the blue, telling me that he had been involved? ). Barton told me about his involvement with the National Geographic as I searched the cold box. I know I only heard parts of what he was saying. Too bad for me - my loss. I was immediately drawn in, I was interested. The bate had been offered and I was hooked, really I was. How did all of this come about? How was it that , here and now, at this very moment in time as I was looking for a bottle of IRON HORSE'S " I AM GIVING / I Am The Ocean " that I was actually talking to someone that had been involved in this magnificent project?!? ... ... ... ... ( These two pictures above are not mine and ones I found on the internet on Facebook and share them as they fit here and , I believe add to this story . Cheers. ) ... ...

Reading About,Seeing Lucie Morton's Name W/ BOXWOOD Estate Winery In Virginia, Calling BOXWOOD Immediately, Expressing Interest, Wanting To Meet, Taste, Given Rachel Martin's Name ...
The long and winding road to finally get to the BOXWOOD Estate Winery this past Monday with Bruce of ProWineTours driving me there on April 29th, 2013. It was a lovely trip, cool and very damp with a constant gentle drizzle this morning as we left Shirlington and the Curious Grape food and wine store where we met, five strong! It was an animated conversation between Bruce and me and we both had plenty to say and to offer in response to each other's comments and the drive through these gentle rolling valleys and hills and picturesque towns here in northern Virginia - way, way, beautifully away and awash in the splendor of Virginia's countryside filled with farms and signs of agriculture, horses and cows and green stretches of young produce starting to thrive and flourish, kissed ever so gently thousands of times over now, even just on this one morning by a thin gauze of the smallest ever rain drops, points of life-drawing moisture. Wow, I would have taken more pictures of all of this if not worried for a memory card that might be almost finished?!? Argh, the toils and traumas of practical consideration, for I could have taken hundreds of pictures on this day , and probably should have! .I..
... ... ...
It's part of life, you can plan and plan I did for this day but the timing and the amount of time I had just did not always coordinate and arrange itself into ways that I could fit everything I needed to do into getting ready for my day in Virginia visiting three wineries and getting to see all three for the very first time and soak up all that I could to enrich and add a more complete picture for me of a state that already has two hundred-plus wineries now. Wow, that's amazing all in itself and hard to wrap my thoughts around. But I was was going to give it my all and do all that I could to make this the greatest experience possible for me as it was the first-time ever that I was seeing BOXWOOD Estate Winery, BREAUX Vineyards and PARADISE SPRINGS of Clifton Winery. ...
... ... ...
I was excited and ready for whatever. Talking with Bruce that was driving us and finding out that he had worked for both Touton Selections and Elite Imports was a great way to get the ball rolling. Then finding out that bruce was working on writing a book on the wines of Virginia and getting it done and ready to publish by this September-October 2013 really did get my juices flowing. I told him that he could not forget including the past and how we have arrived here where we are today. I mentioned names like Gabrielle Rausse and I was about to mention Lucie Morton's name but we got side-tracked in our conversation. I know that at some point we got to talking about the three vineyards that we would be visiting. I know that bruce told me that he visits each winery before he takes people to them. I know that he knew many of the wineries like BOXWOOD already and had visited many of them. I know that he promised that he would get us special tours with special attention. I liked hearing all of this. I was getting psyched and loving it. ...
... ... ...
Bruce would tell me and everyone about the landmarks and a bout the vineyards, the local restaurants and landmarks, and it got more interesting and animated as we approached our first vineyard which was the BOXWOOD Estate Winery nestled beautifully and snug in one of those gentle rolling valleys surrounded by lush baby-tender shades of green all around. Little would prepare me or surprise or please me more than when we got to BOXWOOD and I waved to the lady that Bruce had just spoken to at the gate, Amanda was it ( ? ) as we approached the door on the left side, I opened it and there I saw standing in front of me, first Rachel Martin inside the circular tasting table in the center of the room with, I had to take a quick double-take, and then another - was it, could it be, yes, it was I believed, I was surprised, I was elated, I was amazed, pleased, starting to overflow with emotion and happiness - yes, it was Lucie Morton that was greeting me, that I was greeting, both of us smiling, I regaining my composure, hugging, with Rachel Martin smiling broadly all the while as she witnessed our splendid greeting! Rachel, I am sorry that I saw and recognized, but did not acknowledge, as I spoke first to Lucie, Rude, I apologize. But I was so happy! ... ...
... ...
It's time for me to got to work so I will continue this later today or tomorrow as I still have a whole lot to say. ... ... ... ...
Vive Virginia, vive Virginia wines, so glad to have finally arrived here to see you Rachel " sur place, chez toi " at BOXWOOD Estate and to have Lucie Morton here, too : where the whole story started for me years ago when I read the Washington Post newspaper story announcing your arrival and the name of my old friend Lucie Morton that helped you all decide on which vines and root stocks to plant, and then to plant them, too. I had in these first few moments at BOXWOOD Estate come full circle, I could not believe or imagine this, my great luck and good fortune. And all because Lucie was already there and when she was about to leave you mentioned I would be arriving soon and she waited to see me! That alone made the whole day for me, everything else would be icing on the cake. Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn Thursday morning, May 2nd, 2013 here at home in northern Virginia
I have emailed Rachel and mentioned that I would have loved to walk the vineyards some with Lucie that morning. I said that it would have mede this surprise visit with Lucie even more memorable. I am sorry that I did not think of it at the time. Too bad. I was too surprised to be seeing Lucie. Anyway, Rachel emailed me back and she said that perhaps the next time Lucie comes to check on the vines that I can join them and tag along. That would be grand for me as everything starts with the vines and their planting. You cannot make good wine without good grapes. It would be a real treat for me to see the " new " vines that have been planted on the left of the drive to the winery when you fist enter through the main gate. Bruce pointed them out to us as he drove into the vineyard once the gates opened for us. It was a thrill to see this mostly brown earth and small wood vines so close to the ground to our left and the lush and baby-green, much-taller growth of vines already well-established and producing to our right. What block of vines is that Lucie/ Rachel? ... ... The pictures I am using here so far are from earlier days when I was driving in Virginia and not on this Monday. I still have to download those pictures and so they will have to wait for another blog entry. Sorry. They will come, I assure you. ... ... Rachel and her staff did pour the 2012 BOXWOOD dry rose at the Natural History Museum on Thursday March 21st, 2013 from 7-9PM in the rotunda upstairs with the beautiful elephant after both the conversation and the book-signing with author Jancis Robinson ( c-authored with Linda Murphy : AMERICAN WINE ). I have included pictures of this event here with Rachel in them. It was a very momentous event and sadly, as we both discussed on this Monday morning at her winery, we did not see others besides myself from either the retail or the restaurant-side of the wine trade in attendance. I told rachel that it was probably not very well-publicized and so many of us in the trade perhaps did not know? Or that perhaps it was the $75 ticket price that deterred many from attending? I did not mind spending the money. I wanted to meet, at least once in my life, Jancis Robinson that has provided for all of us such invaluable information about vines, wines and grapes. ... ... ... ... As a matter of fact I took my book called : VINES , GRAPES And WINES " that Jancis wrote for her to sign for me. When she saw it she was surprised, smiled and said that it had been awhile since she had seen it. It's my favorite book of hers and I am thrilled to own it and have it now signed by her. ... ... SO : Lucie and I chatted a mile-a-minute and it was so much fun and so animated. I used to sell Lucie wines years ago when I worked at the Mayflower Wines & Spirits on the corner of New Hampshire Avenue and M. Street Northwest, Washington D.C. in the old Arnould & Porter office building, on the ground floor. What great times those days were. We would chat about so many things and Lucie knew that I being an artist had designed and drawn labels for both the Mayflower Wines & Spirits house wines ( a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon bottled by ROUND HILL back in the mid eighties ). It was great to talk quickly about BOXWOOD and also about Rob Deford and his BOORDY Vineyards in Maryland as Rachel had also selected and planted more recently vines to grown there for Rob. It was way too quick : Lucie had things to do, places to be and so much still to do that she soon left me spinning in a nice place there in the tasting room at BOXWOOD ESTATE Winery. I did manage to get several pictures taken with us, and even with the two young male winemakers of BOXWOOD that would soon take us on a tour with Rachel Martin. I am only sorry that I did not think to have pictures taken with the three of us : again my loss. I will correct that the next time that I go. ... ... ( The picture above I took of Rachel talking with both Michael Kaiser and with Dave McIntyre : Michael is on the left and Dave on the right with Rachel in the middle, just in front of our famous elephant , there in the Rotunda of the Natural History Museum of the Smithsonian Institution on Thursday, March 21st, 2013 , just as the wine-tasting was started with wineries represented from Virginia, New York, Michigan, Colorado, Texas and California, too : but just one. ... ... I will talk more about the 2011 in stainless steel tanks- a very, very difficult vintage that took much time and care and real attention to detail: and 2012 - a glorious year in barrels in their circular barrel room that reminded me of OPUS ONE, Rachel quickly corrected me and said that they were quite different - vintages that I tried with Rachel and her two winemakers shortly. I loved the contrast : I found incredible strengths in both vintages and I would gladly drink either. I really do believe that BOXWOOD ESTATE is starting to grow into it's full self and identity. It's taken awhile, they have not compromised the quality or the wines. ... ... ... ... ... I am glad to have mentioned already the two books from Jancis Robinson. In her co-authored book with Linda Murphy they give Virginia many pages and include BOXWOOD ESTATE Winery and also Lucie Morton : and I am thrilled for that. Both deserve a whole lot of attention. ... I am also thrilled to have found again and refernced on several occasions Lucie's old book : WINEGROWING In Eastern America by Lucie T. Morton - An Illustrated Guide to Viniculture East of the Rockies, published in 1985 by the Cornell University Press. I recommend that everyone get a copy and keep it handy. ALSO : Lucie says that she is working on her " new " book . I will have to ask her more the next time I see her. Lucie, you must tell me / us more : include it here in the COMMENT section at the end of this blog. ... ... I will write more soon so stay-tuned and enjoy what is here so far. It's now Friday morning here in northern Virginia at home on May 10th, 2013 and I have to get to work. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn ...

Winemaker Sandi Belcher of the ARNS ESTATE Winery in Napa, California Visits Anthony Quinn The Wine Manager Of Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits, Tuesday, April 30th, 2013, Tastes 2009 Cab. Sauv & Barrel Sample Of 2010 Cab Sauv : Impressive as Always!
... ...
... ...
... ...
... ...
I copied this from the Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits Facebook page just now. It was great to see you again today Sandi and to taste with you the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon ARNS ESTATE Napa red that will come today to Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( 3423 Connecticut Avenue N.W. Washington D.C. 20008, Tel : 202-3630-4265 anthony.quinn@clevelandparkwines.com ). We already have the 2007 in Cabernet Sauvignon at $84.99 and the 2007 Syrah at $82.99 a bottle. We bought those on your first visit to us and have been thrilled to have them in our store. ... ...
... ...
The wines showed beautifully yesterday as did the 2007 reds when we tasted and bought those. It was nice to catch up with you again and talk lots of " shop ", and lots of " vineyard ", and to hear about how expensive it has become to farm organically. We talked of hawks and lady bugs and all other manner of natural farming, about John Arns and the tractor, about the owls and how they love it there. We talked of Lucie Morton and you asked me : " What's she up to these days? " You spoke of her and one of her friends that she talks to all the time at UC Davis is it? I should have asked you whether she has visited you at ARNS Estate? I bet she has?
... ...
... ... ( These are both earlier pictures that I posted here until I have time to find the other ones of your first visit here Sandi and add them to the current one ). ... ...
... ...
I have to add my notes that I took on the sales sheet on ARNS ESTATE wines that I left at the store. I am at home now. I always piece these stories together these days so as to at least get something out for everyone to read and look at the pictures. My life seems to be like this : a bit of a collage that I work on constantly and try valiantly to keep up with!
I did enjoy this visit Sandi and I did greatly enjoy the wines, the ease and joy with which we tasted and conversed, and the beautiful things that I just read this morning that you wrote about me here below when I asked you to write something that we could share with our Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits customers. Thanks for that. Thanks for the wine, thanks for the friendship. Come again anytime, do a wine-tasting here anytime. It's a whole lot of effort on both our parts but well-worth them as the dividends are so high on so many levels, some obvious and others impossible to calculate or know until they are made obvious to us. If you ever have a group here for a tasting we can gather them together and do our own " theme " tasting as we have now done for years. Cheers and thanks again. I am glad to say that today the blue skies are here and the sunshine, too : and that should make your visits here even nicer.

Here's what Sandi and I wrote yesterday in my office while she was still there with Jeremy Sutton of Kysela Pere et Fils et Fille and just after we had tasted the 2009 and the 2010 ARNS ESTATE Cabernet Sauvignon. ...

Glad to know that you are organic and that John put up posts in the middle of the vineyard where the owls like to perch! TONY
