1+1=3 Never Looked Better If You Ask Me! Cheers! Celebrating 21 Years This Exact Day Here At Cleveland Park

You always get more than you expect with 1+1=3 : that's the whole idea. Our customers here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( 3423 Connecticut Avenue N.W. Washington D.C. 20008 Tel:202-3630-4265 sales@clevelandparkwine.com www.clevelandparkwine.com ) love it and we sell it everyday. It sells for $15.99 as is our best-selling Spanish cava. It's so smooth and bright and elegant and refined. It has no bite and people like to drink it all by itself : it needs no food and yet will complement many a meal.

I am happy to report that I am not the only photographer here in the store.

Our two customers were celebrating today and the 1+1=# just seemed like the perfect choice to continue their celebration. I have not yet heard how it went over but I expect soon to hear lots of praise for it. Stay-tuned for an update to this story.

Come and get some 1+1=3 Spanish cava ( $15.99 ) from us next time you are in the neighborhood. Cheers ...

Enjoy these photos, TONY ... I'm not the only photographer. In fact, we have many professional photographers that shop here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits... hasta luego amigos/amigas ... TONY

Wine Tasting April, 2009 Of WOLFFER ESTATE, Long Island New York 2008 Chardonnay @ Cleveland Park Wines W/ Jody Jackman

Look at the great gold-bright, sun-enriched/drenched-baked-saturated color of this Chardonnay in my Reidel tasting glass here above? Can you believe it : like the warmth and the attraction of the sun itself ... and wait till you get to the bouquet and then next to the taste of this 2008(?, I think so ) taste : like the pull of a benevolent siren that only wants to please you in every way possible in this instance, of course ... you're safe at least if you know and trust your taste buds. Go on : taste it! You'll thank me if you do. Many have already before you ...

It's now Sunday, December 6th, 2009 at 1:25 PM and I am trying to get my tear organized and I realize that I never posted this blog and am sorry for that. I was able to try an assortment of these wines with Jody Jackman of Winebow Imports along with the rep from the WOLFFER ESTATE.

This was back in April and so you can see that this entry is way-overdue. You can also see from the photos that I could have as easily included it in my chatart.blogspot.com as I focused a lot on getting some artsy photos here of the label and the light in the store as well as the color of the bottle and trying to pierce through it and see both our rep and the store. I loved the deep yellow of the label ; it mirrored nicely my deep attachment to this particular wine in the group which included reds as well.

I was surprised by my reaction being so strong and in favor of the Chardonnay over the other reds? Why was this? Usually I would pick a bottle of the reds over the whites as I love reds more than I do many whites.

However living now with my wife contentedly for so many years my love and appreciation for whites has grown greatly as wife overall prefers to drink them and not reds. That's okay and I have tasted many more whites as a consequence which is good for my job when it comes time to recommend them on their own and along with food accompaniment.

I first got onto the WOLFFER ESTATE Finger Lakes, New York wines years ago when our then-rep Nikki Neufeld ( how are you Nikki? It's been quite some time and you , too did bring us many interesting people from the Winebow portfolio including the owner of the NARDINI grappa house who's products still sell really well for us , thanks for all of that and Happy New Year 2009 ! ) brought me some of the sparkling WOLFFER wines and I think we immediately included one of them and then two? It's been quite awhile since then and I should now look again at buying some of them as it is the season and I do not have any New York State sparkling wine in the store.

It has been a pleasure to represent the WOLFFER ESTATE wines and I am sad to state that at this particular moment in time that all we have now are a few bottles of their excellent dry " Apple Wine ". Jody, I'll call you on Tuesday and we will address this dilemma together and correct the imbalance.

As I said before on this visit and tasting the wine that impressed me the most was the WOLFFER Long Island, New York Chardonnay 2008 was it? I can't read the label here : it's too fuzzy? It was the current release as I recall. I will ask Jody on Tuesday and add it then to be correct.

Anyway the Chardonnay was the winner hands-down and I think that there are two big reasons for me in this case. One, I don't expect to be blown-away and very impressed with Chardonnays these days if they are nor white burgundies. Second, at that point in time in April I also found it the most enjoyable and ready-to-drink of the bunch that was presented to me. I'm looking for wines that show well when I taste them. I like wines that need to be aged : or that can be aged more.

However, I respond really well almost immediately to those that are showing well at the moment that I taste them : and they catch my interest more as a result. I know from lots of past experiences that no one wants to wait anymore : they want the wine to taste good yesterday and not tomorrow! That seems to be a fact for many of our customers as I also know that they will be drinking the wines today and not tomorrow.

They only own a bottle or two or three and so will drink them now and not wait, simple as that. That's just the reality : it is in no way or form a value judgement on my part. Why should it be? I am happy for their continued business and support. And knowing this I am interested in buying more wines that show well right now and not as many that will need another six or eight months or more of time in the bottle.

This Chardonnay was delicious and according to the weather back in April which might have been quite cool it really hit all the spots that I am interested in. I told both Jody and the lovely rep from WOLFFER ESTATE this at the time. I cannot now for the life of me remember her name but it was her second or third visit to Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( 3423 Connecticut Avenue N.W. Washington D.C. 20008 Tel: 202-363-4265 sales@clevelandparkwine.com www.clevelandparkwine.com ) and she remembered me and we got off to a great start on this last visit.

I loved her smile and her " look " this day with the beautiful curly hair on this day : the way the store lights above shone and bounced off of it as well as her warm earth colors in her clothing , and the jewelry, too. I think I told her all of this at the time. Being an artist I quickly am drawn to all of this and take it in quickly as we talk and I taste and we get comfortable around one another once again.

It's a bit of a ritual and one that I enjoy thoroughly and which also works really well fro some of the people that I meet for the first time as well as for those that I am seeing once again. It's not for everyone but it's my way and I don't think I will ever change.

I took some extra pictures of her because of all of this and have included them here for you all to enjoy as you call us at the store or email us in search of a bottle of this excellent WOLFFER ESTATE Chardonnay. Don't delay : call now and I will have some by Wednesday for you all to enjoy while you reread this blog and enjoy the pictures as well as the stories here.

I almost forgot to mention that I ordered the Chardonnay for the store and that soon after Jody used it in one of her in-store Friday night wine-tastings.

It has been excellent to work with Jody as she brings so much to the table each and every time that she comes to see us. On top of this she gives so much or herself and gives it her all when she tastes with customers; drawing them in with many notes and observations of the wines that she is tasting. People learn when they come to one of her tastings ; and they relax and enjoy themselves marvelously, too. Often people ask when is she tasting again and is she included in this or that " big Theme " bi-monthly tastings that we conduct on Wednesday evenings at the store with thirty-forty wines or more to taste. She's really a big part of the Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits family at this point and we all love her.

Jody also tries to bring us all her reps and owners and wine-makers when she can. I love this part as much as any other part of my job and it is nice to be able to say to those that I am tasting with that we will include within a three-week period one or other of their wines when Jody comes to taste next on a Friday evening at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits in our nation's capitol from 5-8 PM.

Jody, maybe we should include a WOLFFER ESTATE bubbly or the Chardonnay once again? What do you say?

There, I think I have included a lot of what I would like to say. Now all I have to do is try some of the reds once again to see which one is showing optimally at this point? Is it one of the Merlots?

Cheers and Happy Holidays to one and to all this 2009 : may your New Year be grand, too .... TONY

Owner/Winemaker Morten Hallgren Of RAVINES Wine Cellars, New York Winery Visits Cleveland Park Wines Tues. Mar. 31st, 2009

Here are some wonderful pictures I hope to match the wonderful wines that I discovered this past Tuesday with Morten and Jody Jackman our excellent Winebow rep that always brings us some of the finest people in the business.

It was great to try Morten's wines and I will write more about them. Also, this Friday Jody will taste at least one of them here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( 3423 Connecticut Avenue N.W. Washington D.C. 20008 Tel : 202-363-4265  sales@clevelandparkwine.com www.clevelandparkwine.com ) with our customers from 5-8 PM.

On Tuesday with Morten who is originally from Denmark ( learned wine making in Montpelier, France ) and Jody Jackamn we tasted six wines : two whites ( one Riesling and one dry indigenous blend ), one dry, round, elegant rose, and three reds ( a Cabernet Franc, a Bordeaux red blend and a Pinot Noir ).

The dry indigenous white blend was crisp dry and very flavorful with both weight and body and needing food to balance it out even if only cheeses, etcetera. The Riesling was also dry and yet it was rounder and softer and easier to sip on it's own.

The Pinot Noir was very pleasing and silky-soft : so nice to enjoy either with or without food : medium-to-lighter-bodied. The Cabernet Franc was fleshier and round, fuller on the palate and really pleasing though nowhere as spicy, earthy or zesty as the Loire Valley Cabernet Francs from Chinon, Bourgeuil and Saumur-Champigny. The red Bordeaux blend was the most interesting of the three reds and got me caught up/rapt nicely by it.

All the wines were balanced and focused and well-made in my opinion : more of an old-world style. The rose was dry yet full and rich and with good weight and accent and yet so drinkable and appealing just like the more flavorful Provence wines from France.

It was a great time and an eye-opener and I learned more about the excellent quality of wines being produced in New York state, in the Finger Lakes region .

Come taste with Jody this Friday April 3rd, 2009 from 5-8 PM. We will have a grand time with these New York state wines.

     Thanks,  TONY

New York Greek Goddess, I Mean Andrea Englisis Visits Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits in August 2005 To Taste " New " Wine Releases

It was a really pleasant surprise to finally meet Andrea the young lady behind the DOMAINE MERCOURI Greek red dry blend that I have always loved. That's been ever since I first discovered it when Sotiris Bafitis saw the white in our store at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits on one of his very first calls to sell us wine at the store.

He did not represent the DOMAINE MERCOURI but he sure knew it's history and he could not say enough about it's property and vineyards as well as about it's history and superb quality. I told him how much I enjoyed then the complexity of the white on the shelf that already had a few years of bottle age. I was surprised to see how well it showed with all this bottle age and told Sotiris that I thought it was a superb wine to enjoy at it's present state of development with food and not by itself. It had too much flavor and taste and needed the counterpoint that a good meal would provide.

Anyway Jody Jackman our Winebow rep I believe brought Andrea Englisis ( Vice President of Athenee Importers & Distributors, LTD P.O. box 2039 Hempstead , NY 11551 Tel : ( 516 ) 505-4800 Fax : ( 516 - 505-4876 www.atheneeimporters.com ) to Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( Tel : 202-363-4265 sales@clevelandparkwine.com www.clevelandparkwine.com 3423 Conn. Ave. N.W. Wash. D.C. 2008 ) to try some of her company's new releases. This was on August 4th, 2005. How time flies! It really seems almost just like yesterday or a few weeks ago and not three years and three months ago!

I always ask everyone to write a page in our guest book before they leave. While Andrea was writing I took these pictures. I wish that I had also taken pictures of the other bottles that they tasted me on as memory fades easily away. This is what Andrea wrote : " Dear Tony, It was great to meet you and learn about your store and your philosophy. I look forward to working with you and spreading the good cheer about Greek wines !! Best wishes , " Andrea Englisis.

In all fairness to Andrea I was a bit hard on her as I viewed her as someone descending from New Your City to invade the D.C. area where Sotiris Bafitis had worked so hard to already " spread the good cheer about Greek wines ". I said that my first allegiance was to those wines of Sotiris' but that because she was working with Jody Jackman whom we really think the world of that we would fit a couple of her wines into our store : i.e. the Commanderie and the red 2003 Domaine MERCOURI.

Jody did in fact come and taste both of these wines as well as others on at least three various in-store wine-tasting at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits since Andrea's visit and they have always shown and sold well to our customers.

Since Andrea's visit I am also sorry to say that Sotiris' Greek import company ( Vina Mediteranaean ) has unfortunately gone out of business and so we can no longer purchase wines through him. Some have been picked-up by others companies such as ATHENEE and so there is a continuity/fluidity and a history still at Cleveland Park with these excellent wines as well as many other fine Greek wines.

Sorry Andrea that I was so rough on you on your first visit. You handled yourself really quite well though I could sense and feel the fire and the fight in both your eyes and your stance as you readied yourself for whatever next I might throw out there to see how you would respond. I have always been a bit more than just a bit of a devil's advocate and I have paid the price for this as it has not always endeared me to those that have not appreciated or seen eye-to-eye with me. Oh well, is that why you have not returned to see us in more than three year's now Andrea? You must come sometime and we should drink some more of both the DOMAINE MERCOURI red and white. Is there also a rose?

Questions! Questions! I have so many. Anyway, we continue to always sell lots of Greek wines at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits. You see they are a tradition in our store that was started years before me by my Greek predecessor Peter Anastopolos and now carried on by me. I must sell them, too , and not just because of their excellent qualities alone.

Let me explain : my name is Anthony Quinn - like the famous actor. I loved Anthony Quinn in the movei " Zorba the Greek ". It was filmed in black and white so many years ago and the last time I really watched it in it's entirety was back in the mid seventies in Paris, France with my then-girlfriend-now-wife at the cinema international of Trocadero. Wow, it was powerful and still is! I loved how Anthony Quinn in the last few moments of the movie when his grand plans have all been but dashed still has the love and the affection and energy to teach his English poet/professor/benefactor how to dance on the white Greek sands as the sun sets! I was hooked then and there! Their smiles and their affection for one another was cemented as for-always then and there and I'll bet if the film had continued that they would have still been there for one another.

So you see, though Anthony Quinn was Mexican and I am Irish I still must sell Greek wines because of this and so much more! We have had a lovely customer, too named Joan that has worked with Sotiris that visits regularly and we always speak of things Greek and so much more including Sotiris!

Then there are all of our customers that come and are searching for Greek wines and are always pleased and sometimes thrilled to see that we always offer a selection and not just one or two. We could always buy more, we never really have enough. Our customer David whom is Greek also likes to always give his friends Greek wines even though he himself does not drink. Then there is Gaby and Lane that love the small bottles of Retsina that we must always have on hand because it just goes so well with certain dishes that they like to enjoy every now and then. It's really quite simple and yet quite complicated this fine web of individuals and their stories that they bring each week to us in search of Greek. We don't mind, we rather like it actually. That's life : real life as it is meant to be and we are there to facilitate that it always remain this way.

Here are the pictures I took on this day when I tried a series with this young brunette who I later discovered was the owner with her family of the New York import company of these very fine wines which also included another favorite of mine : KEO St. JOHN COMMANDERIE'S after-dinner liqueur- like a cross for me between a grand cream Muscat Spanish sherry and an elegant southern French Rhone Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise with splashes of so many other exciting flavors as perhaps you might get with an accent od Malvasia grapes?!?

Cheers Andrea, Come back and see us again. You now represent the future of Greek wines in our country. It's up to you and the young people like yourself with dedication and the desire to press forward and continue the great work of those before you. It's a day-by-day, store-by-store, restaurant-by-restaurant, hotel-by-hotel grind that keeps these excellent Greek wines in the minds and in front of the eyes of those buyers that today have the whole world to chose from right at their finger-tips and almost at their frony doors!

It's been way too long! Come and do an in-store tasting with our customers so that we may introduce you to some of them that can't get enough Greek wines !

It's Tuesday night at just past midnight ( 12:34 A.M. ) here at home on November 11th, 2008 as I type and edit these last few thoughts and stories before sending them out into that universe we call cyberspace. Enjoy! TONY
