SOME BUSINESS FIRST, then the
glorious rest that follows here, so don't stop scrolling or reading till
you get to the end of this store email I write.
I KNOW you will scroll and read
the parts you like, that is great with me, the same way I read the
Washington Post newspaper in the mornings.
I TRY and include things for
everyone, it is more casual and newsy and fun and relaxed, and meant to
be easy on the eyes, and also easy to read. Lots of ' small chunk bites '
for you all you enjoy as time permits.

$13.99 a bottle, , ' Brassin D'Exception - Specialty Brew ', made by
Jerry Vietz the brewmaster called maitre brasseur, ... Celebrate
UNIBROUE'S 25th anniversary with this blond from hell. This raises the
question for me : il y une brune ou une ' ginger ' de l'enfer aussi? Is
there a brunette and a ginger from Hell, too?!?
CIDER -
1) Ginger Cider from Virginia's MT. DEFIANCE Cidery ( we will taste these with our local rep this weekend on Friday the 18th, 5-8PM

WINE From Chris and me, Tony -
TWO Also Served at Mr Chen's Organic Restaurant -
1) 2017 Sauvignon Blanc and
Smillon white blend, $16.49 a bottle, from Australia's CAPE MENTELLE,
western Australia, the Margaret River with 12% alcohol by volume, : 61%
Sauvignon Blanc, and 39% Semillon, this is a dry and full and rich
Bordeaux-blend French-style wine, with medium-to-light-body, some good
acidity and minerality, a fine wine to enjoy with many a meal, and it
will certainly work at Mr Chen's Organic restaurant here. Try it with
the vegetarian spring rolls, or the purple fried rice with either
shrimp, pork or chicken, or their ' combo version ' of all three. If you
cannot dine there, get this dish as a takeout and be amazed, love it
so, tried it twice now, looking forward to the third time.
2) " Terrazas de los Andes from
ALTOS Del PLATA, from Mendoza, Argentina, $11.49, with 13% alcohol by
volume, from the Ernesto Catena family of wines, fruit-forward,
fruit-centered, this is so approachable, so agreeable, so pleasing, easy
to sip and enjoy on it's own, and at Mr Chen's Organic restaurant it
would be great with the Mongolian pork dish with all the onions and pork
and juice, yum, and also with the Singapore Angel Hair Rice Noodles,
with a choice of chicken, shrimp, beef, pork or vegetables. I have tried
the pork and the beef so far, still have to try the chicken or the
vegetables. Chill this Malbec 2016 for 30-40 minutes and enjoy that way!
AND Also here ( not at Mr Henry's Organic restaurant ) :
1) Termes 2014 from Spain's Toro

THE WHOLE STORE is abuzz today
as it should be as we get into another day of 92 degree weather before
temperatures drop into the seventies for the rest of the week and rain
is predicted to fall each day till Sunday, so we will see, and I will chill, have chilled my three reds that I will pour for you all tonight and tell you why I believe they should be chilled 30-40 minutes to best enjoy.
MOTHER'S DAY and TEACHER
APPRECIATION, and taking donations for the TYSHON PERRY FUND were a
success, and we continue to accept in our bin above our computer by our
tasting table for TYSHON PERRY FUND. Please continue to support this
fund and ask more about it when you are here. #BlackLivesMatter and it
is a crying shame that Tyshon's life was taken recently here, the life
of a promising 16-year-old stabbed that died shortly after here in
Washington DC.
I WENT OVER TO THE Firehook
Bakery last Saturday evening and spent some time there in the Roma
Garden and Grape Arbor and Fountain slice of paradise, a lovely evening,
great wines for the occasion served there, all available for purchase
here so do come by.
I ALSO DISCOVERED their ' new
croissants ' - three I believe, I fell in love with all three
immediately. Mazen the general manager, and Josh the assistant manager
were there and they assure me these will soon be available for purchase.
I highly recommend them, and some of the reds I will pour tonight will complement them well. Go by and inquire.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE and we work
with our fellow retailers here to encourage an active, lively, positive
environment for one and for all. There was a good crowd in the garden
and Dwight did a great job pouring the wines we were a part of selecting
for this celebration of both Mother's Day as well as Teacher
Appreciation Week.
IT WAS ALSO INSPIRING to see all
the young students across the street 6-14 years of age showing their
business sense and skills with what they had made to sell , and did sell
there 10am-1PM , alongside the Farmer's Market and the Uptown DC Arts House. Inspiring all!
THE City Fitness Gym with Dega
Schembri raised two thousand dollars or more for the program : Girls On
The Run Washington DC : " Look Good - Feel Good - Do Good " . Cheers! We
contributed a case of wine to this with the help of Manuel Rojas of La
Isla Corp : coem ALMA Cabernet Sauvignon , and the Sauvignon Blanc of
DOS PASOS, both from Chile, from the Aconcagua Valley, we sell them all
all the time,
JUST TRIED : a range of the @FrogsLeap Napa Valley, California wines with our local rep @FernandoSilva of @
ALSO JUST TRIED with owner /
winemaker @ChrisBoustred the fine #fruitcentered #fruitforward

respect for these grapes from Chenin Blanc to Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet
Sauvignon young and older-vines red blends, pretty delicious, will try
and get these here soon. Cheers!
JEFF MAUSBACH one of the
proprietors of MANOS NEGRAS in Argentina, along with Alejandro
Sejanovich was here with Jennifer of Breakthru Distributors pouring his
fine and authentic, balanced, distinct, tasty wines of Sauvignon Blanc,
two Pinot Noirs from Pategonia, and two Malbec wines as well - I liked
them all - they tasted of the land from which they come - true to origin
- bravo Jeff and Alejandro!
WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is an old

have time and if interested in anything check for availability, pricing,
and current vintages if they apply? Cheers, TONY 5/15, 2018

BREAKING Tragic NEWS : Olivier
Lotterie of the Vineyard Brands was just here with owner Tyrrel Myburgh (
cellarmaster ) tasting the current releases of the M.A.N. South African
wines that we will sell again from $10-$15 a bottle : Pinotage,
Syrah-Grenache, Chardonnay and Pinotage ... impressive all, and Olivier
says to me : " I have some tragic news for you Tony : " One of our most
beloved winemakers passed away from a heart attack. " I turn to look a t
him and await what follows : " Laurence Faller. " NO! " I scream. "
That cannot be!?! How?!? " And Olivier continues : " I know you knew her
personally. " Danny Haas would bring her here and one of my fondest
memories of Laurence besides her tasting here in the store with us and
with our customers is her taking me to lunch with Danny Haas over to the
INDIQUE restaurant.
Olivier continued : " Danny is
devastated. The whole region of Alsace is devastated. " We are
devastated, how sad! Laurence has been here at least three times that I
remember, tasting us, tasting you all, signing bottles, doing all that
she can for her wines, for the wines of Alsace, for France : a classy
lady, a real inspiration, married with two children that survive her,
only forty-five years old : TRAGIC.
The other night with my wife ,
Maeco, Katherine, Denise and Sandrine we drank some of Laurence's "
Cuvee Laurence " Pinot Gris with a delicious steak meal that Marco from
Rome grilled for us, with a great green tossed salad with buts and '
special veined and colorfully-explosive deep-rich lavender and red
snaking through the crinkled greens ... a tasty vinaigrette and some
brown rice was it ... RIDGE Zinfandel 1985 that I already mentioned
here, and Laurence's SATURATION of delightful viscous, thick and lulling
and wafting and floating fresh and bright allusion and homage complete
to nuts and honey and creams and dense-deep citrus and vanilla and
varied, variegated, voluptuous flavors-savors-delighting one and all
senses, seriously entertaining, pleasing, teasing, testing, turning and
stopping us and our palates with each sip, big or small ... the flavors
were those to truly savor and not labor, just delight, not fight, just
be swept-up, just be harmonized, humored and everything but hammered as
they made their entrance, found their space and placed - all these
lasting Pinot Gris golden-rich-colored tastes of the " Cuvee Laurence '!
I always had to buy more of the " Cuvee Laurence " in homage, in appreciation of her, her beauty, the intensity of her eyes, the way she would with them grab yours and hold your eyes for a lifetime before releasing them. The way her hair that was drawn back tightly to mold her youthful and edged features. She was so beautiful, so simple in her stylishness, little embellishments of this or that that spoke volumes always. It was always a treat to be in her presence and to taste with her.
She was always very attuned and
very attentive to all that was going on around her. One one of her
visits she was here when Aurelio Cabestrero came and visited with one of
his Spanish owners/producers. I have pictures of all of that and need
to share them now more than ever before.
We have some of Laurence's wines
here today like the Muscat Reserve 2009 " Clos des Capucins " , On
Special for $36.99, 13% alcohol by volume, and I will have to open a
bottle today and celebrate her life as well as that of everyone at
DOMAINE WEIBACH from Kaysersberg , and from family members : Colette,
Catherine et Laurence ... as well as the ' new ' generation there that I
do not know yet.
Laurence you are loved, will be missed, you are so special!
The last visit from Danny Haas
when he came a month or so bearing his twenty-or-so wines included a
bottle of the DOMAINE WEINBACH and after tasting it and sharing it -
actually it included two bottles , a Grand Cru and another - Danny
knowing how much I liked Laurence, left both bottles, one of which I
took home as Joe took home the Grand Cru. Thanks you Danny, we feel your
pain. We are all pained.
I toast now here to you
Laurence. Merci pour tous, c'est bien trop tot que tu viens de nous
quitter, nous sommes tous bien tristes! Ce n'est pas juste ca, vraiment
pas juste. I die myself a little with this sad news Laurence.

HEY, Jimmy's getting married
today! Just sold some real French dry rose CHARLES De CAZANOVE Tradition
Pere Et Fils a Reims , champagne , $22.99 to go along with the
occasion, and since it was all so rushed I loaned them two Reidel
champagne flutes to use as they are on the run, the two of them, too
busy , too impatient after waiting all these years! What a treat to be a
part of all of this as Jimmy has been coming here weekly now for years
tasting sometimes and always picking up what was needed , that, on
special occasions always included a bottle of dry Jurancon white as that
was part of a childhood memory so many wonderful years ago.
Congratulations to you both, you both are wonderful people and it has
been a pleasure and an honor to sell to you over the many years here.
Cheers, I raise a glass and toast you both.

email written and sent on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 ... see how things
have changed or stayed the same. Call for current prices and
availability, too. Cheers, TONY 5/13/2014
THE WHOLE STORE is set up to
serve you with this warm weather whether it rains or shines outside, we
have something for you all. Every week I walk our aisles and am always
amazed that there is something " really new and exciting " from both
Ravi ( liquor ) and Santos ( beer ). How could there be so much? We are
getting so much variety and category, country and style and that is
really exciting for you all. You , like us, just have to figure a way to
keep up with it all. That means finding out what is " hip and current
", " trendy and really new " , purchasing what looks the most exciting
and then finding the time to try these " new " things out. It's
exciting, it's a true challenge with many great rewards in sight for you
all.
I HAVE ALREADY TALKED about and
included many of the canned beers that are available to you all. This
used to be true only with the most commercial of beers for so many years
and then DALE'S came along and started to change all of that leading to
the D.C. BRAU beers that are our very own from Washington D.C. We
always have several of the DALE'S available for you all as well as we
have another drop of the D.C. BRAU coming this week as we mostly sold
out last week. I have also mentioned the many canned beers that we get
from Hawaii and that is exciting and I have seen a fair number of them
on our counter up front being purchased. I feel that we will only
continue to add to all these canned beers so always be sure and ask
Santos. They claim that they are easier to chill quickly, lighter to
carry when you travel and of course less to break or go wrong in bigger
crowds.
CANNED BEER :
1) Blanche De Bruxelles .
White Beer ( Biere blanche, wit bier, weiss bier, cerveza blanc, benoe
nnbo, buzasor - $7.99 a 4-pack of cans, 500ml, 1 Pt. .5Fl. Oz, www.brasserielefebre.be
) from Belgium is new and is wrapped in plastic for east transport and
enjoyment when you get to wherever you are going. Great summer and warm
weather colors, too with white, sky blues and deep sunshine yellows.
LIQUEURS - New & Old -
TRADITIONAL CATEGORIES like
KAHLUA , BAILEYS, and LIMONCELLO are all abuzz with " new " flavors,
too. I just wrote up one last week for KAHLUA with peppermint I believe?
BAILEYS has had the " mint " and the " caramel ". Now we wait awhile
and it's anyone's guess when the " new " flavor of theirs will be
available? We might not know when but rest-assured that we will have
another flavor, perhaps this fall instead of this summer? I don't want
to risk a guess on that as the whole world of liquid refreshments is
exploding with more and more choices and varieties.
THIS MORNING I believe for the
second time the VILLA MASSA Liqueur LIQUORANGE of Sorrento ( On Special
for $22.99, 750ml, 30% alcohol by volume ) that is a variation on the
theme of their Limoncello that started off the whole Limoncello
revolution here in the United States that seems now like a very, very,
very long time ago. Some of you still make your own and many of you
still buy the VILLA MASSA. Here you have a fun variation to play around
as the warm weather and the humidity are with us off-and-on these days.
IT WAS A BIT OF A MELTDOWN here
the past two weeks as you all kept coming by and asking for the APEROL
Aperitivo liqueur ( $21.99, original recipe since 1919, Fratelli
BARBIERI, 11% alcohol by volume) is based on an infusion of selected
herbs and roots. A popular recipe : Aperol Spritz : ice cubes, slice of
orange, 3-parts Prosecco ( or any other dry sparkling wine ), 2-parts
APEROL and 1-splash of soda. People were a bit distraught and we are
happy to tell you that APEROL is back once again and we bought a lot to
be sure we do not sell out so quickly!
BOTTLED BEER :
WE KNOW MANY OF YOU PREFER bottles of beer and so we have the :
1) " new " FIRESTONE "
Union Jack " IPA ( $12.99, 7.5% alcohol y volume, ) is an American
style India Pale Ale from the FIRESTONE WALKER Brewing Company. This is
for those of you out there that have a passion for the ale.
BOTTLED HARD CIDER :
WE ALSO KNOW that the hard apple cider business is exploding and so for those of you out there have you discovered the :
1) Angry Orchard Hard Cider
" crisp apple " that is naturally gluten-free ( On Special for $9.99 a
6-pack of 12 ounce bottles, 5% alcohol by volume ) : " This crisp and
refreshing cider mixes the sweetness of the apples with a subtle dryness
for a balanced cider. At Angry Orchard we use the ripest apples,
harvested by hand to ensure the highest quality. The result is a
distinctly crisp and refreshing cider."
LIQUOR :
1) EFE 3 Distile RAKI( Triple Distilled , $33.99,, 750ml bottle, 47% alcohol by volume, www.thehouseofburgundy.com
) is made with 100% grape alcohol in Turkey's Bozdag mountain.
Distilled in traditional pot stills with anis seeds. They get the spring
water from the Bozdag mountain. Enjoy it chilled and straight or by
adding water, then ice as a long drink. We are excited to have this as
many of you have asked us now for it for years.
2) " Tierras " TEQUILA
Autentico de Jalisco " Anejo " from 100% Agave( On Special for $39.99 a
bottle, 40% alcohol by volume, Mexico ) is really good and it's also
made from organic agave plants. Made from Blue Agave in small batches
and as smooth as it ever comes. We had it open here last year and
proceeded to sell through it and the Reposado and the Silver several
times over and it's great to have them all back here again.
WINES:
WHITE :
1) Sauvignon Blanc and ALSO
: Chardonnay, 2010 from GATO NEGRO ( BOTH are On Special for $5.99,
Valle Central, 13% alcohol by volume, ) from Chile have been around for a
very long time and we thought we would offer them once again to you all
for casual, easy-drinking wines to enjoy with this heat and humidity.
They are very pleasant and the price is also very easy on all of our
wallets. Come and enjoy them all over again. They also come in many reds
flavors, too from Cabernet, Carmenere, Merlot, and Shiraz.
ROSE :
1) DOMAINE DE MOULINES "
Les Cigales " 2011 ( $10.99 , 12.5% alcohol by volume ) is a nice crisp
and refreshing dry rose that we are thrilled to sell here and it was a
bonus to discover it written up in the Washington Post newspaper last
Wednesday. Great deep wild Sockeye salmon color, too!
2) KNIPSER " Clairette " 2010 dry trocken rose ( $26.99, 11% alcohol by volume,, Laumersheim, Pfalz , www.magellanwineimports.com
) is made from 1005 Pinot Noir and has weight, substance, character and
was I believe the very favorite tasted this weekend by Chris Bartha
when we tasted dry roses for Mother's Day. Lovely.
3) CHATEAU ROUBINE 2011 " Cru Classe " Cotes De Provence ( $19.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume , www.chateaurubine.com
) is a delight to drink. So much elegance, refinement and finesse and
bright rose sunshine taste. Made by Valerie Rousselle that is the owner
and the harvester and the wine is made from their own grapes and not
purchased. It showed beautifully this past Saturday and everyone loved it and many bought it, too.
4) GRAF V. SCHONBORN 2011 dry Pinot Noir rose ( On Special for $19.99, 11.5% alcohol by volume, Volkach, Germany, www.schoenborn.de
) has got really lively, brisk high levels of acidity and a deep rose
color and will complement many a meal. It is best when served with food :
salads, tapas, many hot weather meals.
5) " Pink " 2011 dry rose
from SCHLOSS SCHONBORN VDP 100% Pinot Noir ( On Special for $19.99,
11.5% alcohol by volume , Hattenheim, Germany , www.schoenborn.de
) is lovely : softer, more mouth-pleasing, fuller and smoother on the
palate. I loved it, really I did. It shows really well with food. Love
the deep rose color and mostly just love the way that it tastes. It's a
beauty any way that you cut it.
REDS :
1) Pinot Noir 2009 Pinot Noir from Oregon's FIRESTEED Vineyard ( $14.99, www.firesteed.com,
12.7% alcohol by volume, Rickreall, Oregon ) is light and bright and
refreshing and a real treat to enjoy all by itself and certainly with
most meals, even with this heat and bouts of humidity that come and go
depending. Great value, too. We are happy to have it back again.
2) Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 " Coleccion Privada " from NAVARRO CORREAS in Mendoza, Argentina, www.ncorreas.com
is On Special for $9.99. We are almost sold out once again. Come get
some while you still can. It was once the measure by which all great
Argentinian Cabs were judged by. If it was approaching the quality of a
Coleccion Privada then it was something to take seriously. Here we have a
really tasty, flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina and you
should all sample it all over again : especially when it's at this great
value.

I AM SURE I HAVE FORGOTTEN MANY
THINGS. I certainly hope that everyone had a great Mother's Day
weekend. The weather was nice most of it fortunately and that's always a
bonus. We hope that we can help you with this weekend and to get
through this week until you may enjoy this coming weekend when the rain
will be perhaps a distant memory from Monday's deluge as it may be another one tonight.
Keep a close eye on today's weather and have an umbrella with you. Stop
by, chat and relax and let's share some stories. We are sure that you
have many, we certainly have many. Cheers and thanks for everything that
you do for us. We appreciate it. TONY
