THE WEATHER NEWS Scares Me So Often! I love looking out ... as I did yesterday my day-off looking out on Monday into my yard with sun streaming inside , lovely, a real treat, made me smile immediately!

THE WEATHER TODAY is cold and it will drop to below freezing tonight after 5PM, and that is something I can deal with, the election in Alabama is another more challenging matter, and I mention this only becasue the eyes of the world are turned towards Alabama today.

HAPPY HANUKKAH ! It starts tonight and sundown and we wish everyone a happy holiday. Cheers.

SO MUCH TO PROCESS these days and it  is challenging, and stressful, the news on Channel 4 today about more sexual harassment charges against President Trump and Mario Batali, then the stories of continuing bullying of our school children and their sense of despair, depression, and more - all very hard and disturbing.

SO : GATHER ROUND, Gather Together, let us celebrate that that is indeed positive and that we can effect in positive ways, strengthen our ties and move forward in peace and good will and purpose to grow stronger and not weaker.

WE HAVE a full roster of activities starting tomorrow and going through Saturday. And on Thursday we have something very special and a bit out of the ordinary as we gather as a community over at the Uptown Arts DC space , December 14th, 2017 ( 5:30-8:30PM , free, no charge, invited everyone to be a part of this and to bring anything that they want to share, to taste wines with me, Dan and Narayan, ( Robert Kennedy is provoding some bottles of the Bianco and the Piria spumante Lambrusco from owner-winemaker Alberto Paltrinieri to be poured ) and to look at the art there, to draw and sketch if they want - supplies to do so will be available there - so join us if you are free, tell neighbors and friends, everyone invited to come.

I JUST SPOKE to one of the organizers there, Jamal Gray that provides the music for the events. He came by to check in with me and to say ' hi ' and he will be there on Thursday afternoon as we set up anything needed. ) SO : join us there and here all this week. All the wines we pour there will be available here for sale if anyone wants some to enjoy later.

THIS IS and old store email from December 10th, 2013 that I wrote and sent many moons ago!

THE WEATHER NEWS Scares me so often. I love looking out at the white snow and it's so calming and lulling. I got dressed and immediately went outside to get our Washington Post newspaper to " test the waters ". so-to-speak, frozen waters in this case. It was okay and though the snow was big and falling steadily it looked like I would be able to navigate out of our protective cul-de-sac this morning. Scraping the snow off my car was fun. I enjoyed it. I also made my first snow ball of the season and threw it into our front yard for fun.

BEFORE Going Outside to go to work I read the Washington Post newspaper and was inspired by the article on Neil Young at the age of twenty-five then playing at the Cellar Door for five nights in late December-early December 1970. He had not quite yet written the song with lyrics that go like " The need and the damage done ... knocking at my cellar door ... " but he would soon. During this period he was playing the song " Old Man " among other favorites.

ANYWAY, I REMEMBER as a college student going to the Cellar Door to hear concerts like Eric Anderson and Sea Train. Funny, today there's the group Train that always make me think of Sea Train, and just like I trekked to the Cellar Door back in the early seventies my son and our lovely Chinese neighbor trekked to the 9:30 Club to see Train sing. I love that : that's the past and the present coming together - showing the relationship, what binds us together always, no matter what generation.

I ALSO REMEMBER the ritual of going to The Tombs of 1789 Restaurant three or blocks away from The Cellar Door. We would go downstairs into the cellar downstairs underground and order the incredible hamburgers with always a pitcher of whatever beer was current and popular at the time. it may have been a SIERRA NEVADA Pale Ale ( $9.99 a 6-pack ) or an ANCHOR STEAM beer ( $10.99 a 6-pack now )  from San Fransisco. Both were so popular back then with Yuengling Porter being such a great value then.

THERE WERE SO FEW BEERS back then, some were local. It could have been something on tap from Olde Heurich brewery that was brewed then here in Washington D.C. just there by Key Bridge, on the bank of the Potomac River, a few hundred yards away from the Cellar Door? Now we have the DC BRAU beers and ales that are brewed here that are also available on tap as well as in 6-packs that range in price from $11.99 - $12.99.

I JUST MENTIONED This to Santos and his face lit up and he said : " We used to sell so much of it - the Olde Heurich ), from Kronheim Distributors, $4.99 a 6-pack that went up to $5.99 a 6-pack then $6.99 a 6-pack - available no more. They are not making it no more! "

THE OLDE HEURICH Brewery was close to the original house of Francis Scott Key that has been since taken apart in pieces and lost unfortunately! The Olde Heurich mansion is still off of Dupont Circle. I think that now it's a museum. It has a beautiful courtyard and garden on the side street that it is on, and my wife in the past have met there and enjoyed our lunches way back then, in the eighties actually.

SO MUCH HISTORY and NOSTALGIA!

FOR THE WINES back in the early seventies there that were so very popular - a red, a rose and a white. Any of you all remember their names? No, well I will put you out of your misery and tell you :
     1) BLUE NUN German sweet white
     2) MATEUS Portuguese off-dry rose
     3) MOUTON CADET Bordeaux dry red

I drank all three and enjoyed all three at the time. I especially felt good when I would take my date out to dinner and there at our table by our side was an empty bottle of the MATEUS rose with a candle burning in it to provide ambiance and an open bottle of it for us to enjoy! Now that was classy, now that was romantic : that was " THE life ! "

TODAY Instead Of BLUE NUN we have :

     1) Liter bottles of German off-dry Riesling from the famous Rheingau, the 2011 Weinkeller Erbach that is drier, more complex, and completely different to the old BLUE NUN which does not exist anymore.

2) Riesling MONCHHOF of Robert Eymael , a 2012 from Germany's Mosel region, $19.99, 9% alcohol and drier again and much more versatile. It's more like the modern-day BLUE NUN that we no longer sell.

3) 2010 Riesling Pfalz from AC A. CHRISTMAN, $24.99, 12% alcohol by volume, again is the modern style of drier, more versatile-with-food wine that we are drinking today.

4) Gewurztraminer Weingut 2011 Spatlese - late-harvest estate-bottled from Bechtheimer, Germany, $17.99, 10.50% alcohol is delightful, aromatic, floral and with good balance and focus. What a great food treat!
IN FACT : the most like the old BLUE NUN is an off dry red German wine :

5) SUN GARDEN fruity red Dornfelder, an indigenous grape variety, $12.99, 2009 that is light-bodied, may be chilled, fresh and toasty red berry-cherry flavors, and so easy to enjoy with or without food! Once people try it they either love or hate it.

I AM HAVING lots of computer problems so I will be posting today's store email in pieces here. I am sorry for this and apologize. I am not a computer person and the government is closed and so many of you are off and shopping and I have less time to devote to todays' store email as a result.

TODAY WHAT'S LIKE MATEUS ROSE ?

1) DE MEYE Stellenbosch Shiraz 2011, On Special for $9.99 a bottle, that softer, more vibrant floral and dry style that pleases immediately!

2) " Sincerity " 2012 Pinot Noir French Loire rose from a - dry, good flavor, good focus - lovely! AND a GREAT VALUE, too!

3) 2012 DOMAINE De La SOLITUDE Cotes Du Rhone, $18.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, we had this open this past weekend here with Oscar and it's showing really well now with the extra time in the bottle. What a great holiday wine, all these are great holiday wines!

WHAT'S LIKE MOUTON CADET ?

1) 2010- great Bordeaux vintage, the CHATEAU CROIX Des GENTILS, $10.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume is a small property that makes this smaller-production of dry red Bordeaux, a typical blend of Merlot and Cabernet grapes that " over-delivers for the money! LOVE it, more coming tomorrow! Cheers!!

2) CHATEAU L'INSOUMISE " Caresse du Terroir " 2010 Bordeaux rouge dry red blend, $14.99, also packs a whole lot of punch for the dollar and is another wine that today is a real step-up from the MOUTON CADET. Cheers.

3) 2008 CHATEAU D'AIGUILHE QUERRE Grand Vin De Bordeaux from Castillon, Bordeaux, $27.99, 13% alcohol by volume, has more finesse, more polish, more elegance at this point : it's really impressive now and a great holiday wine to enjoy ahora, agora, maintenant, presto, now, NOW NOW NOW! Cheers.

SO MUCH WONDERFUL Nostalgia, gotta love it, I do, do you?!?

LIQUOR - LIQUEUR From Malkit and Jagir :

1) 1757 Distiller's Reserve Virginia Brandy from CATOCTIN CREEK ( $46.99 a bottle, 40% alcohol by volume from Loudoun County , VA. ) is hand-crafted,small-batch local brandy that sure does please and soothe and is perfect for this cold weather today as many of you are off!

2) Irish Cream Finest Quality from CAROLANS ( On Special for $13.99, from Ireland, 17% alcohol by volume, ) is made with fresh cream and honey. PERFECT for this cold, so soothing and so pleasurable.

BEER From Santos :

1) 2013 Hugh Malone Ale from ALLAGASH , a Belgian Style IPA ( $18.99, a 750ml bottle, 7.3% alcohol by volume , Portland, Maine ) : this should do it in this cold! Tasty, fiery?!? Warm, yes ... warming, too ...

2) The BRUERY Unfiltered Bottle-Conditioned " Tart Of Darkness " Sour Stout Aged in Oak Barrels ( $21.99, a 750ml bottle, 7% alcohol by volume, from Orange County, CA. ) : again, this will do the trick as you look out on all the white snow everywhere, and sigh a relief that you are off , home and snug and sound!
