THIS IS THE HOLIDAY SEASON and it has been great to see many familiar faces as
well as some that we have not seen for awhile that come visiting family and
friends here in Cleveland Park. Some like David and Emily moved to start a
family in Virginia where it is more affordable. They got a babysitter and had
the weekend to themselves and chose to make us a part of it. Now that's really
special to us and we feel honored, really we do.
Others like Leslie brought her boyfriend Stephen in two with her this past
Friday night. She lives now in Logan Circle's neighborhood and could not come to
Cleveland Park without saying " hello " to us. Her bright smile and positive
words and enthusiasm lit up the whole store and sure was appreciated at the end
of a long and busy day here.
Dan visited from Old Towne, Alexandria to make his purchases of wine. He and
Leslie used to live in the neighborhood and yet they still shop with us. People
that used to live here years ago and have moved away still get this store email
and when they visit they mention that it helps them to have a sense and keep up
with their old neighborhood. Perhaps the nicest thing to hear is that those that
have moved have never found a store like ours and that they miss shopping with
us.
Now that's gold to our ears. Thanks to you all, thanks Leslie of Logan Circle,
Emily of North Arlington, VA., Leslie of Olde Towne, Alexandria, VA., Dan,
David, Stephen, and all you others - there are simply too many names to mention
here.

SO OFTEN THE CONVERSATION goes like : had to stop by, could not come to the
neighborhood without coming to say " hell ". Are you tasting anything? Got
anything special for me / us? I / we want you to meet our relatives.  ... and
the relatives and friends say : we have heard so much about you. WE, TOO have
heard so much about all of you. This is a place of business but it is also a
place that we pride ourselves in knowing faces and as many names as we can and
remembering what people like and are interested in? I wish I could remember more
of your names. It pains me to not remember them all. Mention them to us from now
and then so that we can hear them and not feel embarrassed to be asking you once
again what your name is. That would be a great holiday gift to us - to hear you
say your names to us to remind us what they are so that we may as often as not
call you/ address you by your names.

HARRY WAS BY the other day. He calls when he need s things. His wife Elinor
passed away this year and I had included her recipe in one of our store emails :
FABULOUS MUSHROOM SOUP on Page 17 of the recipe book called : " A TASTE Of
CLEVELAND PARK ".  We have this recipe cookbook and we are happy to show it to
you anytime.I was able to finally see Harry this weekend and tell him how sorry
we were for his loss. He needed some Sancerre to take to a dinner party and we
took care of him. Have a happy holiday season Harry. Our thoughts are with you.

SPEAKING OF PASSINGS, this year Sidney Moore Margolis passed away. She used to
own the Mayflower Wines & Spirits. Some of you still remember and mention it to
me from time to time. She ran with Michael Downey ( I was fortunate enough to
work there with them both in the mid eighties - before computers, before the
internet, before Smart Phones. I-Pods, Apple, Windows, the i-Pad, - the canvas
was still largely white and Sidney sent out through the mail - when Robert
Parker, Jr. was just starting his Wine Advocate newsletter. When Bob used to
come to the Mayflower and purchase wines to taste and possibly include in his
Wine Advocate? When Sidney would have a weekly weekend delivery pf Panelle
breads from Hoboken, New Jersey, the POGGIO LAMENTANO unfiltered murky
olive-green extra virgin olive oil for sale, the monthly wine samplers of six
wines for you all to try? ) .
THOSE WERE some glorious days and we will miss you Sidney. Your impact here in
Washington D.C. and the wine business was enormous and many of us still remember
you fondly and have taken and shared/ utilized ideas that you developed to
continue in your footsteps. I HAVE, for one continued to love and explore
Italian wines which was a specialty of the Mayflower Wines & Spirits. I have
also continued to write and express myself through these weekly store emails as
you did monthly, typing up at the back of the store in your office on you
typewriter. Remember those?!? So here's to you Sidney!
THANKS for all that you did for me as well as all that you did to make the wine
business special today even in these difficult times where so many things are
now corporate and about points and scores and unites and numbers and less about
love and passion and dreams and what really matters : the people and the
families behind the wines. Yesterday it was announced that Robert Parker , Jr.
had just stepped down as editor-and-chief of the Wine Advocate and sold it or
part of it?THOSE WERE SIMPLER days, there were not yet as many people in the
wine business, the 1980's, and Bob Parker was not the name he was now.
THEY OFTEN REFER TO HIM now as the wine " god " of the business, a term I never
cared for. Back then it was such a pleasure to chat with him and advise him on
some of the wines that he might be interested in tasting and considering for the
Wine Advocate? It comes as a bit of a shock to me that he sold the Advocate and
has stepped down. I might not have agreed with his point system and assigning a
number to a wine. I do feel that he did a lot of good even with the point score
he developed and pioneered. I loved some of his prose. He wrote well and it
inspired a desire in me to search for and perhaps purchase and taste the wines
that he wrote about.
ANYWAY, we will miss you Sidney. When you passed away and Harry came on a
Saturday and told me, and Jim Stutsman was here that knew you both, we
celebrated her life the three of us. Nice. Later that night when the store
closed and we walked outside a heard a black musician playing along to a
recording of Jimi Hendrix' " Red House " and I had to walk up to him and listen.
I could not get away from the thought Sidney, that the music was carrying you
off and away and that it was both a comfort to you as it was to me as I smiled
and remembered all the good times we had spent in each others company. Cheers!
