Cleveland Park Is Happy To Work With Austrian Importer Klaus Wittauer On The GUSTAVE STRAUSS Austrian Wines From Steiermark/ Gambitz When He Conducts His Wine-SEminar @ The Austrian Embassy

For More Info On This wine seminar please go to : www.kwselection to sign up.

Our customers already told us great things about the one he did previously on the ANTON BAUER wines... cheers,  TONY

From an in-store wine-tasting with Klaus Wittauer here at Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits.

We love Gustave Strauss of Austria! We have the Samling 88 Classic off-dry white, lighter-bodied, fresh and vibrant and zesty, bristling, open and pleasing and also entertaining white that's so easy to drink anytime, anywhere, with or without food! We sell it for $14.99 a bottle and have sold it here now for years, since 2005 I believe? The Samling is a name for the Scheurebe grape.

WE ALSO sell the dry Sauvignon Blanc and that sells for $19.99 a bottle.

KLAUS WITTAUER is doing another wine-tasting at the Austrian Embassy up the street like he did for the ANTON BAUER wines. We hosted that with him and sold many of the wines from that very successful event. Thanks Klaus.

We are doing the same now with the GUSTAVE STRAUSS wines of Gamlitz, , Stelermark, Austria. For more info on all this please go to : www.kwselection.com. Sign up for this great opportunity to get to know better the wines of Gustave from the two mentioned above to ... 1) the dry white Pinot Blanc, $17.99, the ... 2) STRAUSS ' Cuvee Julia ', $29.99, not here in the U.S. yet, as well as the .... 3) Muskateller Frizzante, $19.99 with sparkle, joy, mirth and, of course , good - NO : GREAT cheer! Thanks again Klaus and Gustave!  TONY 10/30/2014

Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
LOTS COOKING, BREWING, DISTILLING, FERMENTING as we have enjoyed getting our
valued government employees back at work starting last Thursday. That's a good
and welcome sign. Welcome back everyone! You had forced stay-at-home time off -
that was stressful : I took my stay-at-home-week-vacation before the holiday
season gets into full swing - and it was refreshing and lacking any real stress!

I RECEIVED AN EMAIL : " DC Council : leave the Cleveland Park Service Lane On
Connecticut Avenue as it is - Sign the Petition! " How do you all feel about
this? Do you want it to stay the same, do you want it to change. We have or will
have the petition here for you all to sign again so that your voices may be
heard. This is an important change if it goes into effect and will take time to
implement and it will disrupt business as usual we feel this holiday season. So
be sure and make your voices heard, if not here then by contacting the DC City
Council and letting them know directly through a phone call or an email.

MY STAY-AT-HOME-VACATION : what a : new perspective on life I got as I worked
the whole week outside on maintenance and repairs to our home, deck, carport :
lots of painting, lots of conquering old fears and beating them back once again
and proving to myself that I could! A small leap indeed for mankind but a huge
leap for Anthony Quinn!

IT'S INTERESTING TO SEE LIFE and to experience it from balancing precariously up
high on ladders scraping shutters and then painting them, scraping wood trim
high up over our carport, pulling up tired pressure-treated wood planks on our
deck and creating new support and solidity once again for us to enjoy fully our
deck. Easier said than done, especially when you do not do this very often and
have to learn as you go.

THE VIEW from our roof yesterday was exhilarating as I scraped peeling paint
from wood trim and green moss from our roof shingles themselves. Felt good, it
really did balancing the quart of white paint in one hand and painting without
spilling, laying on my belly at the edge of the roof. What a vision I must have
been!

THE MOST SCARY THING was coming face-to-face with our resident shed shiny black
snake that was lumpy up-and-down it's body length with mice! It happened twice,
actually three times in all : and on the third time I got pictures to show it in
all it's glory taking in the sunshine at our shed entrance.

TO BALANCE THAT was the small, flat gray-haired, tiny vole that I saw a couple
of times as I pulled-yanked unwanted ivy from the side of our house that was
doing it's very best to climb up our brick wall there! The vole sure was cute,
glad that the black snake had not found it!

HALLOWEEN IS COMING! BOO!!!

We still have some Pumpkin beers. The category has exploded this year and
so you still have plenty to choose from. Unfortunately they were released so
early as seems to be the trend today. What are the breweries thinking? The same
has been true with the Octoberfest beers. We recommend that like squirrels you
come and purchase what want and the " squirrel " it away until you need it. Do
as a squirrel!

YOU MAY WANT TO buy some now, however, to be sure you have some for Halloween.

WHITES :

1)  JEAN SABLENAY Sauvignon Blanc Touraine 2012 Loire Valley, France (
$10.99 a bottle, 12% alcohol by volume, from around the town of Tour ) : this
bottle is dry, bright, fruit-forward and so refreshing, a real treat!

2)  MATUA 2012 Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand ( $11.99 a
bottle, 13% alcohol by volume ) : refreshing and bright, and reminded Michel and
me of the French Loire Valley Sauvignon Blancs. Like the above J. SABLENAY this
offer a freshness and a brightness, a little softer than the above Touraine.
Nice.

3) RAPIDO Dry Italian Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie, 2012, ( $9.99, 12.5%
alcohol by volume, ) : it's lovely like the 2 Sauvignon Blancs above : great to
sip, sit back and relax and feel good about the rest of the day that you still
have to enjoy. Cheers. Franceen came and poured some wines here this weekend,
this may have been one of them?

4) HILLCREST Sauvignon Blanc 2011 from Durbanville, South Africa ( $19.99 ,
13.5% alcohol by volume ) was just tasted here this past Saturday by John and
Theresa Morrison. It's bright, fresh, lively, with a clarity and a focus that's
pure delight - liquid sunshine filtered through Sauvignon Blanc, what else could
anyone want? Cheers.

5) Moschofilero 2011 from ANTONOPOULOS ( $15.99 a bottle, 13% alcohol by
volume, wine of Patras, Greece ) : a lovely dry white , protected geographical
region " Arkadia ". We had Sotiris Bafitis here this past weekend pouring the
wine for everyone to enjoy. Distinct, aromatic, a touch of floral, very
appealing, quite special taste!

6) CM CASTELLUCCIMIANO 2012 Catarrato indigenous dry white Sicilian grape
variety ( $17.99, 13% alcohol by volume, ) is grown high up, way above sea
level. The owner was here with David Enright and his wines blew Michel and me
away and we have some of most of them. This is a medium-bodied, elegant dry
white that has subtle tones of mineral and citrus and a velvet-bright taste that
lilts and rocks your palate, like being pushed ever so smoothly while in a swing
... nice. This wine is special, really. Enjoy with or without a meal.

7)  Pinot Blanc from BARTH RENE , Vignoble de Bennwihr, Alscae, France,
2009 ( $16.99, 12% alcohol by volume ) : with the bottle age this wine has
blossomed fully into a delightful, fruit-forward, bright and
fresh-round-no-edges- taste that is a pleasure to sip with or without a meal.
What a treat! I liked it immediately when I tasted it again about a week and a
half ago! Cheers.

8) Adoli Ghis 2011 dry white Greek wine from ANTONOPOULOS ( $21.99, 12.5%
alcohol by volume , from Patras ) : amazingly distinct, fresh, clean, crisp,
mineral-laden flavors and tastes that make an immediate impression that
strengthens quickly and reveals even more character and personality that you
want to continue enjoying with a meal. This is seriously impressive wine for you
all to enjoy now. Close your eyes, it's got the body and the flavor of a good
red. Cheers.

REDS :

1) Anne De Joyeuse MALBEC 2012 " Original " depuis 1868 from Limoux, France
( $14.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, Certified Protect Planet by Bureau Veritas
International BVQD ) " this is where Malbec first was planted, even before
Cahors in the Lot region to the north and just south of Bordeaux! Wow! It's so
bright and red-fruit toasty-berry flavors that that are easier to enjoy and
certainly less harsh and tannic : and great value, too! Oscar may have just
tasted this here over the weekend?

2) 2008/ 2011 Chianti Colli Senesi from Italy's Tuscan region and from
TENUTA VALDIPIATTA ( $17.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume , in Montepulciano, Tuscany
where they filmed some of the TWILIGHT movie- Movie Two I believe ? ) : the last
few bottles of the 2008 are fully-developed and flavorful, more extraction. The
2011 is softer and lighter and brighter red toasty berry flavors. Both are
recommended.
I prefer the 2008. My son will be there this coming weekend seeing and tasting
with owners, father and daughter : Guido and Miriam! What fun. We have all their
wines here for you all! Come check them all out and enjoy these Colli Senesi
Chianti wines in this cooler weather now.

3) 2011 McLaren Vale Shiraz from Thomas GOSS, this Aussie red ( $19.99,
14.5% alcohol by volume, go to : www.thomasgoss.com.au for more info ) has got
some real weight, good mouth-feel and grip, and a splash of extra alcohol to
warm you even if you enjoy a glass outside in these cooler nights! New and
exciting for us here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits.

4) 2006 Private Collection Dry Red Patras Greek red from ANTONOPOULOS (
$21.99, 14% alcohol by volume ) : Sotiris Bafitis was here again this past
weekend to taste these fabulous Greek wines with you all. This wine makes a real
statement : the best of both the modern and the classic worlds. It's a good
medium-bodied dry red to enjoy with a meal. Have a glass all on it's own and
then settle into the meal and the benefits of combining both together. Cheers.

5) Notarpanaro dry 2006 Salento Rosso Red from TAURINO ( $24.99, 14,5%
alcohol by volume , 100% Negroamaro indigenous grapes ) : Sotiris Bafitis also
tasted this here this past weekend while I was on my stay-at-home-vacation. This
is a classic, old-world style of barnyard, kitchen sink, herbs and spices and
olive, tar, leather and tobacco flavors that cry for food to flesh out these
more lean and muscular and less-polished yet highly personable and wonderful
flavors and tastes. Medium-bodied : a real class-act: everyone should experience
this wine more than once in their lifetimes!

6) CAPE ELEMENTS 2009 dry red South African Blend of Shiraz, Cinsault and
Grenache from Nico Van Der Merwe ( $18.99, 14% alcohol, Stellenbosch, South
Africa, www.wilhelmshof@xsinet.co.za ) is a medium-bodied Rhone style red with
some real polish, brightness and elegance. We tasted the 2009 on Saturday with
John and Theresa Morrison and it was a huge hit. Here we have the previous
vintage as well for less money and more bottle age. Perhaps buy a bottle of each
and compare and enjoy? Cheers.

ALSO : From an old email I copied this here as it's an important story
to keep telling : Go Virginia!

VA. WINERIES Recommended By Steven Spurrier : Steven Spurrier had his Caves
De La Madeleine and his Academie Du Vin in Paris, France off the Place De La
Concorde in the early 1970's and in 1976 he conducted a blind wine-tasting with
both French and American judges of both California and French wines and the
French picked the American wines as better!

What a scandal ensued! He was just invited back by Virginia's Governor to
do a similar wine-tasting with both Virginia and other well-known/high quality
wines. The Virginia wines fared really well. Steven had some favorite wineries
and wines.

Dave McIntyre of the Washington Post wrote up the results this past
Wednesday. Here are some of the wines we have and recommend from Steven's
favorite wineries :

BOXWOOD ESTATE, Middleburg, VA.

1)  " Topiary "  2008 ( $28.99, 13% alcohol by volume,
www.boxwoodwinery.com ) is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec grapes
from the ENTAV clones grown and processed in the traditional Bordeaux style :

low yields are harvested and sorted by hand ...

Made like the Right-Bank wines of Bordeaux. This 2008 should really be
beginning to open and reveal some of it's many charms. No need to rush. Buy it
in the half bottles that we still have some for $17.99 Boxwood and enjoy those
while you wait patiently for these full bottles to develop and mature.
They will reward the patient. Steven Spurrier tried the 2010 vintage and
wrote about those.

2) " Boxwood " 2009 ( $29.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume,
www.boxwoodwinery.com ) is made like a classic Left Bank French Bordeaux wine
with a blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from the
ENTAV clones ...
It's heartier, bolder, thicker and usually more tannic and in need of a
meal than the " Topiary ".
We have enjoyed them since the 2007 vintage and with family member Rachel
Martin's earlier visits here. She even helped me conduct one of my Saturday wine
classes. That was quite the fun and educational experience. The 2009 are
brighter and more fruit-forward than the 2008 vintage wines.
But they are made to age slowly and gracefully and again the patient of you
are all well-rewarded.
Read above again about what I wrote of the two wines enjoyed this weekend
from the 1983 vintage to get some distance and perspective.
No need to rush. Buy some and put them away for later.
We have a few bottles left for you all and will move on to newer vintages
as soon as Rachel or Andrew taste us on them.
When I visited the BOXWOOD Winery recently and saw my old friend Lucie
Morton there, as well as owner Rachel Martin I was very impressed with both the
2011 and the 2012 vintages, the 2011 being quite difficult, and the 2012 being a
gift of Nature! What a treat.

Giulia Pedrini Of The PRAVIS Winery in Italy Visits Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits Last Week Tuesday, October 21st With Our Local Grappoli Imports' Rep & Tastes Current Vintages Of Chardonnay & Pinot Grigio : Great Balance, Generous Wines, Fine Values, I Liked Both Very Much

This is the start to my blog on the PRAVIS Winery wines that I like so very much and am so pleased to carry here on a regular basis. Cheers happy Tuesday all, Oct. 28th, 2014 : it's warm and glorious here now in Washington D.C., and I would be happy to enjoy a glass of either the Chardonnay or the Pinot Grigio with my lunch later. Cheers,  TONY

I wrote the paragraph below and included in that day's store email I sent to our customers :

NEWS UPDATE : Giulia a family member of PRAVIS Italian wines was just here.
Her sister, winemaker along with their father came here in 2009 I believe.
The wines have always sold really well here, and we will have both the rich
and flavorful, round and viscous-tasting Chardonnay and the Pinot Grigio
the first week of November. I believe I liked the Chardonnay even more as
it was even fuller and richer on the palate than the Pinot Grigio. Both
will sell for $15.99 a bottle, and it will be great to have them back!

It was my pleasure and I have started putting some of the pictures and my commentary on the Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits' Facebook page at : Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits, I will blog about his at : chatwine.blogspot.com, just I did when you sister visited us before. I am so pleased with your Chardonnay and your Pinot Grigio. I did write about them in the Tuesday email I sent to our customers. That I posted at : chatwine.blogspot.com. Go there to see that and to read what I wrote. Cheers. YOu are welcome here anytime and I look forward to doing an in-store wine-tasting here whenever you come next and can spend an hour or more with us and our customers tasting your two wines. Cheers, say caio to Erika for me. A presto Giuilia ...   Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn

Enjoying Immensely The 2006 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru ( Grand Vin De Bourgogne ) Of The DOMAINE FOUGERAY De BEAUCLAIR Tonight, Wednesday October 22nd, 2014 @ Home In Northern Virginia

John our rep from JAO Wine  Imports was nice to leave this open bottle of the 2006 DOMAINE FOUGERAY DE BEAUCLAIR Bonnes Mares Grand Cru that he opened on Monday and tasted me earlier today at Cleveland Park Wine And Spirits in Cleveland Park, Northwest where we will sell the wine at over $100 a bottle On Special starting in early November.

It is magnificent now, even two day's old. I am thrilled to have some poured here in my glass on my left as I type this impassioned love testament here attesting that I, Anthony Quinn , am enthralled with it, the color, the brightness, it's clarity, it's reflective quality, translucence and clam peace and mystery. I'm drawn-in completely. I can still taste it on my tongue, throat and palate, and it has warmed my belly ever so wonderfully.

It was a touch hard when I first sampled it with my salmon dinner tonight. It had edge and a touch of rough and grit and dirt that was hard and less welcoming. hat was thirty-forty minutes ago. Now it is full and appealing and charming and delightful. I'm amazed, I'm dazed, phazed, pleased and pleasured and plumped and perked and feeling a lulling and lilting and swinging perkiness, as if rocked in the best hammock made from the finest rope that breathes.

I'm at attention, I'm feeling the flow, the energy and warmth and brightness of this burgundy red! I love it, I really do, it's a complete wine, perfect in all it's imperfect perfections which are many and so alive and so touchyfeel to my whole palate, all my senses, and all my body. It has charmed me. I'm off to luxuriate in this red liquid gold from Burgundy and will finish this a bit later.

Just watched " The Voice " and " American Pickers " on tv and enjoyed my burgundy wine. The sign of a great bottle like this for me is pure and simple : I liked everything, I liked it from the start to the finish. I did not want the experience to finish. I lingered and languished and took my time and took small sips and savored and paused and went almost in slow-motion. I certainly did not rush.

At the end after taking my last couple of small sips to stretch the experience I inhaled deeply from the glass. I got the last of the bouquet from the glass, too.

I went upstairs during one of the commercial breaks for the last two chocolate and nut biscotti, gave one to my wife, and held mine back to luxuriate in the glow, the halo, the aura, the presence of this extraordinarily beautiful, blemished, muddled and mired and inspired and fired flame of a Pinot Noir combination of various delightful clones. It was an honor, a thrill , a ride that comes so infrequently for me, and I am so thrilled and pleased to have had it ( thanks / merci John ), and I took full advantage of it and wish that there were more to continue.

Another sign of a great bottle of wine is that I do believe that I could have drunk more, drunk perhaps even the whole bottle when and if it was there. I had  half a bottle and I did share a glass with our neighbors. When I told Katarina how much the wine would retail for she exclaimed in front of two of her children : " Wholy crap! I will have to get Matt to try some. "

I will ask her later how they enjoyed this 2006 Bonnes - Mares Grand Cru from the DOMAINE FOUGERAY De BEAUCLAIR? I bet it surprised and pleased them. It did me, and I am thankful.  Anthony  ( TONY ) Quinn 10 /22 2014

SO MANY WINES STILL AMAZE ME, ... I'm STILL AMAZED. that's a gift, a real
treat for me.

NEW PRODUCTS to Taste & EVALUATE... MICHEL, RAVI, SANTOS & TONY

WINES / BEERS / LIQUORS :  They can all still thrill and amaze,  and that's
essential. On this past Sunday evening at dinner with my wife and good
friends Jim and Andrew ...

I WAS BOTH  surprised and thoroughly pleased and entertained trying the
BYRD Vineyard's 2003 , Catoctin , Maryland Cabernet Sauvignon, alcohol
13.5% alcohol by volume with a slightly low-fill that came from my cellar
and that is 31 year's old and still tasting fresh and bright and
fruit-forward, and almost like it had been bottled yesterday. It was
lovely, balanced, fresh and not tired one bit, and it had a low-fill!

A LOW FILL is when the level of the bottle dips below the shoulder of the
bottle and thus there is more air in the bottle than is desired. It is
something that you never know, and can go either way. In this case it went
positively and everyone was thrilled, especially Andrew and me, that was
pure you on our part, especially when you consider that the wine was so
old!

NEWS UPDATE : Giulia a family member of PRAVIS Italian wines was just here.

it was even fuller and richer on the palate than the Pinot Grigio. Both
will sell for $15.99 a bottle, and it will be great to have them back!

DANIELLE was just here also with MARIA MITSIKOUDI representing their fine
wines, many of which I liked, and many that will grace our shelves in
November for the first time. It will be great to add them as we love
selling Greek wines here from indigenous grapes on up to international
grape varieties, too  :

1) TSELEPOS 13 Mantinia Dry white, really good mouth-feel, real gravitas,
some flavor and weight and body, I liked it immediately

2) HATSIDAKIS 13 Aidani Organic dry white, LOVED it, really loved the
intensity, the grip, the thrust, the ' fill and overflow ' of the wine on
the palate, rich, thick, dense, tasty and a great food wine, one of my
all-time favorites of today's tasting ..

3) GAVALA 13 Natural Ferment from Santorini, a dry white, it was more
mineral, more rustic, more hearty and robust and less-polished, but
delicious, especially with food! ...

: ALL these whites are  riddled with extra character and taste, all
distinct, a touch rustic, mineral and bold and less-polished : I loved them
all, ...

AND SOME REDS  with  :

4) the Red Z ZITSA ,  from Epirus using the Metsovo grape, lighter,
brighter, more airy- toasty berry-cherry and spice, prettier, more
drinkable, medium-to-light-bodied, nice with food,   and ...

5) the FOUNDI 2008 Naoussa red , dry, spicy, using the Xinomavro grape in
Naoussa, a brighter version, clearer, more bright and see-through clarity
in the color here, easier to sip on it's own than the Z above ...   and ...

6) the KAMOUTIS 11 Red Veledos , a dry red blend of 35% Xinomavro, 35%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot - authentic, balanced, medium-bodied, a
good food wine,  more body, needing food more, denser color, too, more
pepper and spice and earth here ...and the

4) VOURVOUKELI 12 Limnio dry red made from 100% Limnio grapes, from PGI
Avdira, Thrace : leaner, lighter, more mineral and herb and higher acids
and more toasty-roasted berry - cherry - raisin flavors, I liked it, liked
it a whole lot : fun, something ' new and exciting! "

Stay-tuned for more on these as both Danielle and Maria will be here to
taste them out in November on Friday the 21st, 2014. What a special treat
that will be.

BUT HEY GUYS, let's also talk ALE, BEER & CIDER :

1) " Weez " Ale from the MAINE BEER COMPANY, On Special from Freeport,

like that they support the community while making really good beer like
their 1% For The Planet, and their notice : please recycle. Try it , see
what you think.

2) " Oude Tart " unfiltered , bottle-conditioned Flemish-Style Red Ale
, Aged in Oak Barrels, from THE BRUERY, On Special for $20.99 a 1 Pt, 9

DOMAINE SAINT-EUGENIE in Corbieres, France, a red Languedoc wine that's a
blend of 45% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carignan and 20% Grenache
is showing beautifully now , as of this past Saturday when Chris and I
opened and shared a bottle with our customers. So smooth, so fluid and
silky and a lovely rounded fruit-forward quality that is worth every bit
the $10 that we charge for it! I was impressed all over again this past
Saturday. Come get some for sipping before your meal or to enjoy with your
meal as well. Delicious. One of my favorites for sipping this year.

2) " Les Cimels " Dry French Costieres De Nimes Red Blend from the

3) 2008 Cotes Du Ventoux from the DOMAINE De FONDRECHE, $17.99, 14%

Cimels. I like both, this Fayard I can sip a little more easily by itself,
it's pretty special along with the really fine dry rose that they make and
that we carry when it is available. Bill will have this open here tonight
as well!

SO MANY NEW PRODUCTS to Taste & EVALUATE... MICHEL, RAVI, SANTOS & TONY

WINES / BEERS / LIQUORS to watch tonight's debate between President Obama and
Mitt Romney ...

IT'S A BIG JOB when you stop to realize that there is always someone coming
through our front door with some thing " new " to show and taste us and
sometimes the products fit in immediately and sometimes not. We just had the
people from LEOPOLD GOURMEL Cognac, France come to us and taste us on some
pretty special and refined/elegant-tasting cognacs. I liked them but realized
how expensive they are and told Rick our local rep that he would have to plan
doing an in-store wine-tasting of the " Premieres Saveurs ", the " Age In Fruit
" and the " Ten-Year-Old " to give people a sense of this new vision from
cognac, France. I know Rick will do this, too so when it happens I will alert
you all to this decadently delicious cognac LEOPOLD GOURMEL tasting.

AND SOMETIMES WE CAN TAKE IMMEDIATELY what we taste as in the case of the 2010
BILTMORE Reserve North Carolina Chardonnay ( $17.99, 13% alcohol by volume,
Ashville, North Carolina, 28803, www.biltmore.com , 800-922-0048. It all started
months ago when Stephanie A. Restuccio ( Field Sales Manager ) of BILTMORE Wines
came calling with Lauren Jones to taste and sell Eon and me some of the BILTMORE
wines from North Carolina. There was only one wee little problem : the wines
that we were tasting were all made from grapes purchased in California. That
simply does not work for me : I want to sell wines from North Carolina if they
come from the Biltmore estate, simple as that.

WELL, IT TOOK THREE TRIES ( the third time being the charm in this case ) as
Lauren and Stephanie cam last week with this delicious, balanced and distinct
2010 BILTMORE Reserve N.C. Chardonnay that's elegant, not heavy, medium-bodied,
fresh and fruit-forward, with oak more as an accent to give the body some weight
as well as brightness. Both Michel and I liked it and so we bought a case to
share with everyone. We both recommend it. Come check it out.

THE OTHER DAY I was talking with one of our customers named Gabriela Dorilhiac
and once I found out she was from Brazil I showed her our selection of Brazilian
wines. We then talked about cachacas, too and she told us her favorites. So that
I would not forget I had her write them down for us and we are checking into
them : SAGATIBA,  NEGA FULO,  ESPIRITO DE MINAS,  and SELETA. Hove any you heard
of these? Let us know. The funny thing was that she was shopping for a bottle of
rum a gift. It's a really small world. Hopefully next time that you come here
Gabriela we will have one of these cachacas that you recommend from Brazil, and
that you will also buy a bottle of MIOLO or CASA VALDUGA or LIDIO CARRARO? We
will see. It was fun to talk with you anyway and exchange ideas and impressions.
Cheers.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL THIS MORNING, I enjoyed a glorious ride with my son this morning,
even stuck in traffic, even with him worrying that we would not make our
rendezvous, I told him not to worry, that we would make it ... I kept commenting
on the trajectory of the many planes taking off from the Dulles airport ... they
are so beautiful to watch. AND, we made it on time, and I made it to work ten
minutes early. There is beauty in the day and it was a great way to start this
day for me that, I am sure will quickly fill up with things that I have to do
and that's okay.

WITH TONIGHT'S DEBATE These could all be possibilities : the Chateau Vartely
2010 dry Chardonnay is superb and only $11.99 a bottle

CHATEAU VARTELY & HILLCREST Estate :

WE HAVE A COUPLE OF GREAT Wine-Tastings scheduled for this weekend. I do not
even know exactly what we will taste but we have both John and Theresa Morrison
coming to taste as well as Dmitri Courbet. Both know their wines and their
portfolios inside and out. So I am sure will will have two tastings that include
some South African wine, some Moldovan wine, too : and then some West Coast
wines of California, Oregon and Washington State. We will get the details ironed
out shortly. Dmitri is from Moldova and two weeks ago his mother was visiting
and she has been making wines in Moldova for more than thirty years Dmitri tells
us. I included some recently at a fund-raiser that I did a wine-tasting and
included some wines from Moldova that were very-well received. Thanks Dmitri.
John Morrison is from South Africa and I just sent a message to the HILLCREST
Estate  Winery there in Durbanville where Curly is the winemaker. He's quite the
character.

WE MAY TASTE  Curly's Sauvignon Blanc this go-round as the last time we tasted
his dry red blend, the 2006 of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blended together (
$14.99, 14% alcohol by volume, cellardoor@hillcrestfarm.co.za ) that's got good
body, toasty beery flavors and spice and pepper, too. It's a really good food
wine. Come check it out.

BEERS FROM SANTOS : Beers for the debate?

I WALKED THE AISLES here earlier for both beer and liquor inspiration. I found
some exciting beers from Santos to mention here:

1) KARLOVACKO Pivo Beer Stoljetna Tradicija  Okrunjeno Kvalitetom ( On
Special for $3.99, 500ml , 1 Pt. 0.9Fl. Oz, 5% alcohol by volume ). Would one of
you please come and tell me something about this beer, it's fascinating the
label and the bottle and I could use some help! Cheers.

2) Ale On Lees  EPHEMERE ( $10.99 a 4-pack, 12 fluid ounces, from UNIBROUE,
Chambly, Canada, 5.5% alcohol by volume, ) : " bottle fermented/ flavored white
ale on lees ... ale brewed with apple juice. coriander, orange peel and with
natural flavors added ".

3) Sunshine Pils from the Independent TROEGS Craft Brewery ( On Special for
$9.99 a 6-pack of 12 Ounce bottle, 4.5% alcohol by volume, with all natural
ingredients and no preservatives, Harrisburg, PA. , www.troegs.com ) is a crisp,
hoppy Pilsner. Cheers.

4) " Dark Seas " Russian Imperial Stout from MISSION Brewery ( On Special
for $11.99 a 4-pack of 12 ounce bottles, 9.8% alcohol by volume , from San
Diego, California ) is also really new and exciting.

HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYED CLEVELAND PARK DAY this past Sunday. As you know we were
closed on Sunday so we celebrated it on Saturday the day before with a great
wine-tasting of both Argentina and Spanish wines; as well as with Lindsay Marsh
of the LEOPOLD BROS. Small Batch Distillers of Fine Spirits (
www.leopoldbros.com, 4950 Nome Street, Unite, Denver, CO. 80239 303--307-1515 ).
Lindsay ia a family member and this is perhaps her fourth tasting here so far?
She was on fire to help us celebrate Cleveland Park Day and she sampled perhaps
six of the 19 fine spirits that LEOPOLD Bros. makes? It was a great tasting.
Here I will mention two that were tasted , and thanks Lindsay :

1) Silver Tree American Small Batch Vodka ( LEOPOLD'S ) ( $35.99, Batch No.
1204, 40% alcohol by volume, ) is made from a unique blend of potatoes, malted
summer wheat, and malted barley. I learned from Lindsay that if the Slow Food
Movement was in liquid form that the LEOPOLD BROS. would be the first she
thinks.

2) LEOPOLD'S American Small Batch gin ( $35.99, Batch # 1214, 80 Proof,
made by Todd Leopold, Master Distiller, Denver, Colorado ) is made from "  the
finest botanicals including juniper, and orris root, as well as hand-zested
American pummelos and oranges. ... unique, yielding only fifty cases of an
exceptionally complex yet subtle spirit ... ". Check this out. All that Michel
and I sampled we liked, not all 19 but many! Cheers.

TWO Fine RUMS :

1) Ron ABUELO Anejo 7 Anos Reserva Superior from VARELA ( $23.99, 40%
alcohol by volume, desde 1908, product of Panama, kosher, too ) aged in small
oak barrels. Something special.

2) Horchata Con Ron " Rum Chata " ( $19.99 a 750ml bottle, 13.7% alcohol by
volume, Pewaukee, WI. 53072 ) is a Caribbean rum with real dairy cream, natural
and artificial flavors. Drink within the first 6 months that it is open, no
refrigeration needed. Cheers.

Greek Ouzo :

1) OUZO by Metaxa ( On Special for $18.99 a 750ml bottle, 40% alcohol by
volume, since 1888, from Kifissia, Greece ) is a specialty liqueur of anisette
that is often served with water or ice, great before a meal as an aperitif.
Cheers,

Pina Colada, Tropical Cocktail Mix :

1) BARTENDER'S Best Tropical PINA COLADA Cocktail Mix ( On Special for
$4.99 a bottle, 1 liter bottle, contains 15% fruit juice , Levecke Corporation,
Mira Loma, CA. 91752 ) : 4 parts Pina Colada Mix,  1 Part Rum, 2 Parts Ice ...
blend together all ingredients together in a blender for 15-20 seconds. Garnish
with a pineapple wedge. Enjoy.

MICHEL and TONY'S  " Wine Picks " For The Week : For Tonight's Debate ? :

WHITES :

1) Torrentes 201  Mendoza, Argentina dry, aromatic white from ZOLO (
$10.99, 13.8% alcohol by volume, www.vinodelsol.com ) is made from sustainably
farmed vines and a favorite of Michel's! Dry, made from 100% of the Torrontes
grape that came from Spain but which has been cloned to make a more fragrant,
aromatic dry white. Tropical flowers and fruit tones are prominent. So fresh and
bright : a winner! GREAT to watch TONIGHT'S DEBATE!

2) Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc 2010 , the COTE  soft dry , aromatic,
silky-smooth-bright-fills-fully-the-mouth-vegan DOMAINE Du TARIQUET Famille
Grassa ( On Special for $11.99, 11% alcohol by volume, Vin de Pays Des Cotes De
Gascogne, www.tariquet.com ) is made from 50% of each of the Chardonnay and the
Sauvignon Blanc. It was originally made by accident. It's a perfect-sipping
wine, perfect for tonight's debate once again between President Obama and Mitt
Romney. No bite, no edge, luscious ripeness/fullness / cream-dream on the
palate. Lovely.

3) Viognie 2011 dry white from the DOMAINE Des CANTARELLES ( $17.99, 14%
alcohol by volume, proprietaire-recoltant, by Jean-Francois Fayel, Vin de Pays
Du Gard ) is hearty and robust, thick and powerful and definitely a food wine.
It's big and need a flavorful meal to flesh it out. Cheers. Ronnie Miller of the
Bobby Kacher selections tasted it here this past weekend.

REDS :

1) Lancellotta 2008 dry red from Moldovan, made by ACOREX Vine in the Cahul
region ( On Special for $11.99, 13% by volume, ) reminds me of a nice Rhone red
blend - like some Grenache with a splash of Carignan and a splash of Cabernet
Franc. I like it, it's such a fun value. We will taste it with Dmitri this
weekend.

2) Bobal indigenous dry red from Spain's Utiel Requeno region, made by
TEMPERAMENTO, this 2009 ( $17.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, ) is 100% Bobal and
medium-bodied with spice and pepper and a medium-body and good grip and grit
mouth-feel with a sweet wood flavor - what a great character and balance. This
weekend everyone loved it. Cheers.

3) Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 La Consulta , Mendoza Ano Cero from ALTOCEDRO (
$19.99 , 14% alcohol by volume, www.altocedro.com.ar ) was tasted to us with rep
Tom Clare and owner Karim Charbel that is also the winemaker. Michel and I
really liked these Argentinia wines and found them really sound and fruit-driven
wines from start to finish and I loved that. The vines are 47 years-old and aged
in new French oak barrels. What consistency.

4) Malbec 2011 ALTOCEDRO , again from Argentina's La Consulta region in
Mendoza, ( $20.99 a bottle, 13.9% alcohol by volume , www.altocedro.com.ar ),
again fruit-forward and never losing sight of the purity of the Malbec grape.
Blanced and fleshy and a real treat to sip and to also enjoy with food.

5) Malbec Reserva 2009 from ALTOCEDRO'S La Consulta vineyard in the Uco
Valley ( $36.99, 15.2% alcohol by volume, www.altocedro.com.ar ) again was
tasted to Miche and me by both the owner Karim and our local rep Tom Clare.
Again, Michel and I loved it. It's a special treat, really it is. Karim wrote in
our wine journal : " Dear Anthony and Michel ,  I really hope to receive you
some day at the winery in " La Consulta " ( Mendoza - ARgentina ) where we can
eat an entire cow and drink a full barrel of wine . Cheers " signed KMS 10/11/12
.
Later after I got off work I joined Tom and Karim briefly at Ardeo and they
were nice enough to taste me on the ALTOCEDRO Gran Reserva Malbec, and it was
smooth and full and bright and elegant as can be. I enjoyed it thoroughly as I
sipped it and sketched quick portrait sketches of Karim and finished them off
with splashes of his wine to bring the ink colors together even more. Fun for
me, my way of saying " thank you ", and it's a treat to have the wines here
today for you all just in time for tonight's debate!

Jim Stutsman Tells Anthony Quinn Yesterday Afternoon, Saturday October 1th, 214 His Story About Just Tasting Some 1945 Chateau Latour And Some 1966 Chateau Palmer! Wow, I Was And Still Am Amazed, Not Maybe, : Really Amazed!!!! A Chance In A Lifetime!!!!

YESTERDAY I was quite literally blown away when a great friend and customer Jim came to the store saying that earlier he had tasted some 1945 CHATEAU LATOUR as well as some 1966 CHATEAU PALMER! Wow, that is something, both were enjoyable he said, the 1966 CHATEAU PALMER he described as quite flavorful and tasty and he did not say that it was over the hill or past it's prime. With the 1945 CHATEAU LATOUR I got the idea it was drinkable but not what it should or could have been. He was surprised to be able to taste them, he said it was the very first time for him, that he had tasted a lot of wine in his time but never that. It was a chance of a lifetime, rarer and rarer. I said to Jim : " You are kidding me, right? This is not a true story?!? " He responded that it was in fact true and that he had just tasted them both, that our tasting at the store did not match up to what he had just experienced ( he said this with a smile on his face knowing that nothing could really match up to that ), and he said : " That's what the bottles said : 1945 and 1966 , " I wish I could have been there with him. I begged him to write down his impressions of the wines when he got home. I was sick to hear that he did not take any pictures of this. He said that he is getting back into writing and that he would attempt to write something but that he had grocery-shopping to do the next morning for the freshest and the best vegetables that he could find. I hope he found them as well as time to write down and impressions that he might have remembered fresh from tasting two old bottles of Bordeaux wine! Cheers Jim, thanks for sharing this with ,e. I am happy to share this with you all, too/ his does not happen very often. Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 10 / 18 / 2014 in Washington D.C. Northwest ... WOW! I'm still stunned. I hope someone else took some pics! I am glad to tell you all, any of you ever had this experience? Share here in a comment if you have.

CHATEAU PRETY Is Looking Pretty Good Still Today, Monday, Columbus Day, October 13th, 2014 Even Though It's Damp And Gray!

Happy Columbus Day all ... obregado Jandir, I drank some 2009 CHATEAU PRETY Beaujolais Villages ( `3% alcohol by volume, mis en bouteille au Chateau par Philippe CURIAL 71570 Saint- Veran, France a Murray-Sykes Selection ) last night a great year and I enjoyed while I grilled our chicken breasts outside and I was impressed how much flavor, taste, character, personality, and pleasure was in this 2009 Gamay red for me to enjoy. I likened it to having the flavors of the rain and the ground and the dirt and the mold and the vines and the leaves, all as if they had fallen into a barrel on the ground by the grape vines in the vineyards and everything had fallen in and the grapes had released their precious liquids and everything had combined to make a taste of so many elements, just like listening to an orchestra that does much the same with sounds. Cheers, TONY
This was grand, enjoyed the wine over a period of time yesterday and have just a little bit left to see how it tastes today, one day later, now on Columbus Day, Oct 13th, 2014. I liked the wine on so many levels and will be curious what the price is when I see Chris that gave me the bottle to taste and evaluate on this past Friday I believe? I am hoping the price is good. I would like to sell it now and tell everyone to go ahead and enjoy it during the holiday season over the next couple of months' or so as it is really showing well and I think that between $12 and $15 would be a really good price for it now. We will see, stay-tuned for more. Cheers, TONY
