at fiola mare in the georgetown harbor had a martini made with it / found out it
was their well vodka / loved it! also loved the fresh seafood / italian accent
meal there ...
so i have been on the phone with suppliers and having a blast talking and

thomas just came by asking for some of the Domaine DANIEL POLLIER SaintVeran "
En Messie " 2012, $15.99 a bottle, written up in the Washington Post newspaper
the other day. I told him that we had it and went to get a bottle. I also
recommended the 2012 Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay / thomas did not know that the
Saint Veran was a Chardonnay / stainless steel CLOHILDE DAVENNE , $15.99, and
thomas bought a bottle of the Saint Veran. He told me that this was not the
first visit here for hi. He said to me : " the articles in the Post must get
some butts through your door? " I said : " No, not really but that I like to
support the Post and the community and so I try and have them here when the
articles are available each Wednesday. "
then I turned to our local rep Dan that sells me wine and asked him if the
articles draw any sales for them? I said that for us we get a few people asking
for the wines, but not many. Our local rep Dan said that it was the same for
him. We are a part of this community and we are happy that people like thomas
come to see us, that we are grateful for the business it brings us. We all work
together and help each other and that makes it all work, thanks Dave, thanks
Washington Post newspaper. I
I ALSO told thomas that I love holding a hard copy of the Washington Post
newspaper in my hands to read it each day. He agreed, said that he also liked
that.
I RECOMMENDED the CLOHILDE D'AVENNE Chardonnay to thomas because it is lighter,
crisper and more refreshing than the Saint Veran. It is hot and humid and to be
able to drink a lighter Chardonnay now at only $15.99 a bottle is perhaps easier
on the system and more easy to enjoy during and after the wine? Something to
think about ...

the weekend tastings with both Jody Jackman and Andrew Stover were grand
successes : we introduced some great wines to many people and I will mention
some of those now :
From Jody :
1/ ' Clean Slate ' 213 Riesling from Germany's Mosel region : $10.99 a
bottle, 10.5 percent alcohol by volume : refreshing and everyone pretty much
exclaimed that they did not generally like Riesling but this one they did! hanks
Jody.
2/ 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from Catena in Argentina's Mendoza Valley :
$20.99 a bottle, 13 percent alcohol by volume, : both Jody and I tasted this and
agreed that it was our favorite Catena red now. It has pretty much always been
my favorite Catena red. I remember discovering it in the early nineties when I
met Nicolas Catena for a private meeting with Nora Favelukes and myself : just
the three of us at Bilbo Baggins' restaurant in Old towne , Alexandria to
discuss how he could launch his wines here in the Washington D.C. region, I
loved the Cabernet then and still do! It is drinking beautifully now, so
balanced and fruit/forward and balanced, and tasty now! Glad to have it on our
shelves. We also celebrated Argentina's Day of Independence when tasting it that
happened earlier this July.
3/ 2006 ' Quorum ' Grande Vindimia from LIDIO CARRARO in Brazil's Serra
Gaucha region : On Special for $56.99 a bottle. It is a dry blend of 40 percent
Merlot, 25 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent tannat and 15 percent Cabernet
Franc. I loved everything about the wine : classic, traditional. like a fine
Italian wine from Veneto, Italy where they originally came from. Or like a fine
old world style French Bordeaux wine before they started making a more modern
style to appeal to more modern palates. It is an excellent food wine, it will
shine with a meal.
AND With the 20 percent tannat that is added it gives the wine a ' new '
dimension from Brazil that you do not normally taste! I like that : Patricia
Carraro the owner presented it to us here in August 2012 and we started with the
everyday Merlot and now have poured and sold some of this very special ' Quorum
' that is world class. Be one of the first to discover it and to share it with
family and friends and those that you know that love French Bordeaux ' with a

1/ Gruner Veltliner Loibenberg Smaragd from Loiben, Wachau / 2011 from
tEGERNSEERHOF/ MItELBACH, $32.99 we have a rich and thick velvet golden white
carpet of Gruner lushness and brightness that was truly magical on this past
Saturday, 13.5 percent alcohol by volume, balanced and dry and wonderful with or
without a meal! I loved it, Malcolm loved and bought some, it was a show
stopper!
2/ ' Rosenberg ' 2013 Gruner Veltliner from ANton BAUER in Austria's Wagram
valley, 17.99 a bottle, 12.5 percent alcohol by volume: not as rich or thick or
intense but every bit as appealing and easier to drink and enjoy especially if
outside in the heat and humidity. A real special treat, balanced and flavorful
with finesse and some real silk flavors, too.
3/ Dry 2010 ' taste red ' Long Island New York State blend of 60 percent
Merlot, 20 percent Syrah, 12 percent Petit Verdot, 6 percent Cabernet Franc and
2 percent Malbec / $30.99 a bottle, 13 percent alcohol by volume : flavorful,
some real flesh and backbone for those wanting a heartier and gutsier bottle to
drink. For me it needs more time. I think I would really like the wine in
another 3 to 5 years as it will smooth out and lose some of the edge it showed
for me on Saturday : but that is only my palate, others loved it and bought it
to enjoy now.
ALSO In WINE :
1/ Dan terassa brought me some of the 500ml PASSAGEM Porto Vintage 2011 to
taste this morning, $52.99 a bottle : the COLOR alone is so dark and murky and
delightful . I just took a sip from my plastic cup from earlier. I love that it
is so thick that I could hide under it, my tongue at least : that it could
saturate my tongue and give it this same deep garnet/purple hue that is simply
glorious.
DAN KEPt MENtIONING that it drank more like a wine and not a port.
DAN KEPt SAYING that it was a phenomenal vintage the 2011
DAN KEPt pressing that it was an unbelievable value and that there were few
to match it!
I KEPt thinking how smooth and velvety and silky the taste was, how lush
and delicate almost with no bite, so approachable, so incredibly drinkable it is
now so that people can all get a bottle when it comes in August and enjoy it
late at night outside with family and friends and feel like a million dollars
and more!
WE HAVE NOW the PASSAGEM Porto Late Bottled Vintage 2009, On Special for

can also be enjoyed now while so many are relaxing and stealing moments to feel

HEAT & HUMIDITY KNOCKING : How to DEAL?!
THIS IS TWO EMAILS IN ONE : From Tuesday, July 24th, 2012 through Saturday,

IT WAS HOT GETTING TO WORK and yet it's also really beautiful all around with
all the green and the blooming flowers and I am sure the sun will break through
sometime today. It may be that we all have to begin getting up super early and
getting as much done as possible, returning inside for the worst of the heat of
the late morning and afternoon and then going back outside again as the sun
starts to drop in the sky? We all need to find our own solutions if we are still
working and not at the beach or in the mountains by some cool and refreshing
lake. It's a challenge to rise to as this is our times, these are our moments.
THAT'S WHY WE HAVE INVITED KEVIN of Margaux and Company here this Saturday to
taste some of the FOGGY RIDGE Hard Ciders from Dugspur, Virginia,
www.foggyridgecider.com. We have a selection here and I have a bottle of the "
Sweet Stayman " here by my side with 7% alcohol that we sell for $21.99 a
bottle. It's delicious and when we tasted it last with our customers everyone
loved it as well as the drier ones. Everyone had their favorite. We are asking
Kevin to taste at least one if not two for a great contrast and to satisfy as
many people as possible. That's always our idea : seems to work. You can join us
on this 28th from 2-6PM. There is never any charge.
WE WILL ALSO ASK KEVIN TO TASTE some wine as well and we are looking at some
great French wine like the " Dentelles " VENTOUX southern Rhone valley red from
XAVIER. This 2010 ( $16.99, 14% alcohol by volume from the small town of
Courtthezon is charged with explosive flavors, great electrifying spice and
baked fruit flavors, intense raisin-dry-squeezed jolts of taste, a thick ruby
red carpet and coating, too - as well as a long, lingering, satisfying finish.
Have I said enough to interest you? I hope so. This is fabulous wine and not one
that should be missed. Give it a slight chill of up to thirty minutes. Most
everyone is always shocked when I recommend chilling and respond with : " Can
you chill reds? ". I quickly respond that I chill most all my reds for 20-30
minutes.
I TELL THEM THAT IT BOTH focuses the flavors and energizes them. Of course I
tell them that this is only my suggestion and opinion. I often add that I want
them to taste some before chilling and then some after chilling to decide for
themselves. The wine can always warm up this way to the right temperature for
your palate but it can never chill down by itself to the right temperature. Try
this experiment, especially now as the temperatures are soaring so often out of
control. Cheers. You can always let me know when you see me what you thought?
HONEY VODKAS FROM ALASKA tasted recently and to much applause : and here I see
that STOLI has a STOLI Sticki Honey-Flavored Premium vodka ($23.99 a 750ml
bottle, 37.5% alcohol by volume, Go to : Stoli@Stickiberry, try the drink , too
: one one-half parts Stoli Sticki, three-quarters parts white cranberry, soda
water and mix and serve over ice ). Which came first? Which inspired the other?
Is there now a trend afoot to produce more honey vodkas as there has been to
produce Honey Whiskies ever since the success of the WILD TURKEY? The honey does
take the bite or edge away and make the sipping of them so pleasing and
agreeable.
I THINK FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD for the whiskies at least that both men and women
are responding favorably to them. There was just a young man here last week
waxing poetic over the WILD TURKEY version. We had just sold out of it and so we
gave him the choices of either the EVAN WILLIAM'S or the SEAGRAM'S 7 Canadian
version and he picked the EVAN WILLIAMS because it would be the closest in
flavor.
SUMMER SESSION ALE from Evolution Craft Brewing Co. ( On Special for $10.99 a
six-pack of 12 Fl. Oz bottles, 4.6% alcohol by volume, made in Salizbury, MD.)
is local, new and exciting. SUPPORT LOCAL. Go visit them if they give tours. Go

whole line of beers. So many people are asking for our summer beers and our
choices keep changing as we sell through some of them and find new ones, too.
That keeps it all fresh and exciting. Do ask Santos when you are here what our

I understand and so it may be in your best interest to buy more when you see

SPEAKING OF LOCAL, NOTHING could be more local than the " new " DC BRAU " The
Citizen " Belgian-Style Pale ( $11.99 for a six-pack of 12 Ounce cans, 7%
alcohol by volume) that seems to be all the rage now. Everyone is curious to try
it as well as the others when available. There is very limited availability and
we get one drop a month and no more than that so you should definitely buy as
much as you can when you see what we have as that is it for any particular
month. This beer commemorates the historic vote in 1963 that gave the citizens
of Washington D.C. the right to vote for the President and the Vice-President of
the United States when the 23rd Ammendment was ratified.
RIESLING 2011 Washington State from The KINGFU GIRL ( $14.99 a 750ml bottle, 11%
alcohol by volume ) that tells you it is drier and not so sweet. If the alcohol
level was under 10% and closer to 6-8% it would definitely be much sweeter.
Always ask to see the alcohol label when you are not sure. Then you simply have
to taste the wine and see whether it is right for you or not.
THIS RIESLING COMES the Columbia valley and is vinted and bottled by CHARLES
SMITH WINES, Mattawa, Washington State. We are always getting requests for it :
it has really made an impression on many people already. The labeling is rather
bold and stark and in black-and-white.
BEERS From SANTOS :
1) Smoked Porter W/ Vanilla Bean from STONE Brewing Company ( On Special
for $4.29 a 12 Fluid Ounce Bottle, 5.9% alcohol by volume ,
www.stonebrewing.com/VanillaorChipotle ) that includes whole Madagascar vanilla
beans into small batches. This was the idea of Laura Ulrich and it has created a
whole new flavor component and taste.
2) Farmhouse Ale TANK 7 From BOULEVARD BREWING Company, Kansas City,
Missouri ( On Special for $10.99 a 1 Pt. 9.4 Fluid Ounce, 8% alcohol by volume )
: " Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that's just a bit
persnickity. Here at Boulevard's it's fermenter number seven, the black sheep of
our cellar family. ... " You have to come read the back label for the rest to
find out more ... sorry for this tease. Oh well, we want you to come by and
visit us. A bit unfair, O know, and I can find no web page on the labels to

3) Domesticated Wild Ale BRUX from SIERRA NEVADA Brewing Company and
Russian River's Cilurzos - A Collaboration between the two ( On Special for
$15.99 a bottle, Chico, CA. ) is a refermented ale in the bottle with "
Brettanomyces bruxellensis that will change and develop over time.
Copper-colored, dry and complex with slightly tart notes of green grass, pear,
spice and lemon - this ale will progress in the bottle for many years ". Very
interesting,
really.
LIQUOR From Ravi :
1) Grand Reserve Oak Cask Aged Rum from RON Viejo De CALDAS ( $25.99 a
bottle, 40% alcohol by volume, from Columbia ) : " ... sevrets of the Caribbean
and the traditions of Spain. The special process of aging in oak casks, used by
the aristocratic lineage produces the smooth taste, body and flavor of Ron Viejo
De Caldas Grand Reserve ".
2) 70% BLACK Caribbean Rum with Coconut Liqueur from MALIBU ( On Special
for $24.99 a 1.75ml plastic white-colored bottle- lighter, easier to carry
around to parties , www.malibu-rum.com ) can make a great MALIBU Storm : 1 Part
MALIBU Black, 2 Parts Cola, Serve over ice in a tall glass and garnish with a
lime. Sounds so like this heat, so like summer , so refreshing.
3) 10 Years Old Fine Oak Triple Cask Matured MACALLAN Highland Single Malt

REDS :
1) O.P.P. ( Other People's Pinot ) 2010 Oregon Pinot Noir, Willamette
Valley ( $26.99, 13.4% alcohol by volume, is bottled by MOUTON NOIR in
McMinneville, OR. www.moutonNoirWines.com ) has really got some nice, deep,
toasty-roasted Pinot flavors that simmer and linger so nicely over the full
extension of one's palate. Nice.
2) 80% Garnacha, 15% Syrah and 5% Merlot Dry Red Spanish blend from
Carinena, by ESTEBANMARTIN ( $10.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume ) is racy, spicy,
earthy, pithy, medium-to-light-bodied and with a slight chill will be great to
enjoy when you grill outside or with well-seasoned or marinated dishes. It's got
character and balance for such an inexpensive wines. Great hot-weather wine
selection where food is involved.
ROSES :
1) Tocai Rosso Indigenous red grape variety, this TAI ROSSO Colli Berici
from DAL MASO in Italy's Veneto region ( $13.99, 12% alcohol by volume ) is
drinking really well now. It's got good extraction and thus color and really
nice with or without a meal. It will also complement many meals, especially now
that it is so hot. Lovely.
2) Garnacha Spanish Rose from the Campo De Borja, 2011 is dry and deep
colored and tasty for grills and On Special for $8.99 a bottle, down from $11.99
a bottle just a month ago! Great value.
3) Pinot Noir red Burgundy rose , this 2011 Macon-Rose from Jean Curial is
bone-dry and clean and crisp and tart and a touch of tang, too. It's a great
food wine : medium-to-lighter bodied, good rich color and $17.99 On Special now
: really fine, used to be $20.99 a bottle when we bought our first drop of this
vintage. Great with a meal.
MORE RED :
3) Syrah Columbia Valley called " The Eye Of The Needle ", ( $15.99,
info@hsnwinery.com , Woodinville, WA ) : " Pacific Wine ( PWE ) is a small
family-owned winery committed to offering superieor Washington State wines at an
excellent value ". This one is packed with extra flavor, spice, zipping toasty
berry flavors and an energy that churns constantly. Really nice.
SPARKLING :
1) Semi-Seco sparkling Spanish Cava from MONT PARAL ( $16.99 ) is rich and
complex and full on the palate and generous and with a softer dry that has fewer
tart and acidic moments so it is perfect sipping when you want to have more
weigh and gravitas. Lovely!
2) Moscato Mango Natural Flavor from Italy's PICCOLO TESORO, from Canelli,
Italy this is made from more than 75% Prosecco grapes and is a delight for
anyone that is a Mango fan like myself. Fruity enough, also with some good
moments of dryness; lingering flavors that are not sweet and that do not weigh
the palate down. This at 6% alcohol by volume is a perfect summer heat refresher
: golden color - lovely.
WHITES :
1) 2009 CA. Chardonnay from LAMPLIGHTER Vineyards ( $8.99, 13.5% alcohol
by volume, www.lanmplightervineyards.com ) is beautifully balanced and just
slightly oaked with older barrels I believe. It's flavorful and really quite
nice for only $8.99 a bottle and Michel and I are happy to include it here for
you all. Cheers.
2) Moschofilero 2011 indigenous Greek white grape varietal ( $9.99, 11.5%
alcohol by volume, Rizes, Arcadia, Greece ) is very pleasing much like the
French Picpoul from the southwest of France that everyone loves so much. This
Moschofilero has the same pleasing charm and smooth, lilting and satisfying
flavors that you taste in the Picpoul : perhaps even a bit lighter and thus even
easier for all this summer heat and humidity? Great summer white, nice all by
itself : nice label, too.
3) Gruner Veltliner indigenous white grape variety from Austria, from the
WEINGUT WIMMER ( $11.99 for a liter bottle, 13.5% alcohol by volume, from
HUGL-WIMMER GmbH ) is the same as the HUGL that we normally have and that we are
waiting on to arrive from Austria as it is the label that is better recognized
here.
4) Sauvignon Blanc from Western Australia's southernmost region called
Denamrk, this " Zeepaard " made by WEST CAPE HOWE Vineyards' 2010 is vibrant and
lively and angaging and still so complex and flavorful. Chris Pigott and I
walked the vines that make this wine with winemaker Gavin Berry and this showed
beautifully last Saturday here when Arielle Monaco our rep poured if for you
all. It sells for $13.99 and it's really quite tasty and very distinct and very
appealing, too.
5) 2007 Barossa FSR Valley, South Australian LOOSE END dry and smooth and
aromatic blend of 50% Frontignac, 36% Semillon and 14% Riesling. It's creamy
and distinct and nice-sipping and when Arielle poured it here this past Saturday
afternoon for you all our sales were split evenly between it and the more
recognized " Zeepaard " Sauvignon Blanc for the same price. You should try both.

sweetness added in the dosage , Gran Reserva ), and the CHANARMUYO Estate Malbec

not have your own real sense of discovery and revelations, your own hit-or-miss,
you own leap and fly and jump and fall and scrape of your knees -
or not
- but on your own terms, realized by you and your own efforts : that may be
mostly good with some bad, or even mostly bad with some good. Whatever it may
be, let it be your own, let yourself be proud that you engineered and navigated
and steered and directed things by yourself : your sense of accomplishment and
discovery will multiply so very much so this way. Scary but so worth the fear
and the stress that comes from uncertainty!
When You Taste Tonight with Klaus and Andrew close your eyes and pause, hold a
taste of the wine in your mouth, swallow a part of it, and wait and see how the
rest of the wine remaining will magnify and brighten and stir and start and
become bolder and more pronounced.
Most Of All, NEVER BE IN A HURRY, do not rush the experience, move your tongue
around your moth, stretch it out, hold your breath, try and let the wine reach
you - and you reach it - so that you have a better sense of one another. You
will see, you will actually taste how very much more of the wine that you
actually taste this way. It's pretty amazing, it's a real discovery for most, a
real revelation!
Try Not And Be Self-Conscious as you try the wine slowly and focus on it and you
and how you are both experiencing the other? It's not rocket science, it's
pretty wonderful and pretty basic and quite the discovery as your palate and
taste buds will seem to come alive : become real Kodak moments for you : focused
and clear and vibrant, distinct and tasty and special and unique and intriguing
and puzzling and even profound ...
Klaus And Andrew And Tony ( me ) are here to help you but not to rob you of your
own individual experience. You are steering the boat, the vessel, the plane,
whatever, your taste-buds, most of all, and we are only here to help facilitate
that for you, the rest is all on you our brave friends and customers! That's the
way it should be, always.
And If You Do Not Like Something that is perfectly okay because the only way to
navigate this world of tastes is to depend, to befriend, to get to know, to get
to trust, to become comfortable with, and not to fight your own taste-buds and
your own impressions! That is how you will navigate the world and enjoy it more
than not. Trust in your own impressions, and NEVER say that you do not have a
good taste or method of evaluating and appreciating and that others know so much
more than you. They only know for their own palates, not for yours. Yours is
yours and specific and wonderful to you, so accept and learn it and go with it!
I Am Feeling The Pain Of My - Our Mother, of the pain and suffering of getting
old and seeing my mother as well as the mothers of many of those closest to us
getting older and more fragile and frail and worn and beaten down by life and
just living.
I Was So Pleased yesterday to, with my brother , remind our mother that it was
France's Bastille Day and to hear her sing in French La Marseillaise ( spelling?
) , and to hear her voice sound so rich and warm and inviting and beautiful. It
was a special moment, a ' private concert ' for my brother and me , and a moment
that will stay with me now for a very long time. I wish that I had had my
recorder to have recorded this! Oh well, I have the memory now embedded deeply
within. Our mother would have toasted with some Madame Dupont Pays D'Auge
Calvados apple brandy or some Poire William from Marie Brizard if we had had
some handy yesterday. That will have to wait.
So To All Parents And Loved Ones Of Ours I want to have you all join me now in a
" Big SHOUT-OUT " for them and may they rally and be comforted and strengthened
and encouraged and loved by all of us as they continue valiantly on living and
enjoying and being a part of our families and life and this wonderfully complex,
puzzling and amazing world that is ours!

Made a French kir yesterday some aged, old,
forgotten-yet-AMAZINGLY-still-fresh-and-lively-and-KICKING-Framboise-Raspberry-L
iqueur-from-SALAMANDER that I acquired perhaps almost two years ago?!? It made a
FABulous French kir that was slightly sparkling and tasty and delicious for my
wife and me yesterday at the end of a long and eventful day for the both of us.
It was our small and private celebration at home of Bastille Day, a joyous
moment for us.

same year, just shows how ' terroir ' makes a difference when making wine,

1) ' Ice Imperial ' French Champagne from MOET & CHANDON ( On Special for

to put some ice-cubes into it to chill it, make it more lively and less-sweet.
Is that possible? Sounds like brilliant marketing to me and we are trying a case

The heat can be disorienting : so can the brightness of these sunny,
baby-blue skied days as we plod along and try not to shrivel like the grapes
left outside to do so in the Valpolicella region of Italy that results in the
Amarone dry red wines and some of the very best wines made anywhere in the
world!
STORIES, TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS to best survive this intense heat, haze,
humidity and pounding sunshine :
This intense heat that we are experiencing here now reminds me of walking
the hillside vineyards years ago Azienda Agricola LA GIARETTA with the owner and
our small group of five men on a wine-adventure to visit these sites where some
of the greatest wine in the world is being made. We have some of the
lesser-known, lesser-spoken-of Recioto della Valpolicella Classico 2005 ( $39.99
) LA GIARETTA in stock. It is even denser, even thicker and lusher and darker in
hues and riper than the Amarone that everyone knows and loves. It comes in a
500ml bottle, 14% alcohol by volume, for this very reason : you drink it more
slowly, you let it lavish it's concentrated sweet raisin and spice and
toasty-roasted flavors that come from the mostly Corvina grapes ( some Molinara,
Negrara and others, too ).
I AM RELEARNING PORTUGUESE. I spent my early years of 2-8 in Brasil and we
are now selling so many Portuguese wines. More than ever before : we have three
shelves devoted to Portuguese wines in the store and not just to the Vinho
Verdes either that we stock up front and sell for less than $10 a bottle. We
just got back the more flavorful, thicker-richer-denser, fruitier version of a
Vinho Verde - the Colheita 2011 ENCOSTAS DO LIMA Branco Meio Seco ( $9.99, 10%
alcohol ) also has a lovely slight sparkle and it will taste great inside or
outside and not go directly to your head. Enjoy it!
SPEAKING OF PORTUGUESE and Portugal and Brasil we even have the MIOLO FAMILY VINEYARD wines
of Brasil and I have heard through the grapevine that the 2008 MIOLO Family
Vineyards 100% hand-selected Merlot, 13% alcohol by volume, is a very fine
vintage and made in the southern Vale Dos Vinhedos region. I was given a sample
bottle by our local rep and I can attest myself to liking very much this dry,
firm, fruit-forward Saint-Emilion style of Merlot that we sell here for $16.99 a
bottle. You should check it out sometime : it's really a wonderful surprise and
a delight.
I LIKE TO DRAW and as a result I like to connect the lines, especially
between the Eastern and the Western hemispheres. The lines, too are so often
blurred today as many of our customers do not know that many of the grapes came
from the Eastern Hemishere and were brought here by immigrants from Italy,
Portugal, Spain, Germany, France and so on. I have learned by looking at the
MIOLO web page , for example that many of the people that settled in the Vale
Dos Vinhedos were from both Veneto and Trento, Italy.
IT ALL CONNECTS SOMEWHERE and this seemingly large world of ours is
connected in so many wonderful ways and so I can start speaking about Italy and
Portugal and naturally get to Brasil and to Uruguay that we have supported in a
big way for many years now. I am sorry that Abel Sauza our Uruguayian connection
has moved to Florida. We do have, however a really fine dry red Tannat that is a
grape that originally comes from France's Madiran southwest not that far from
the French-Spanish border.
WE HAVE A REALLY EXCELLENT 2007 dry Tannat Cerro Chapeu " Amat " Tradicion
Carrau ( $29.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, desde 1752 ; I got to meet the owner
recently at a trade wine-tasting of the Downey imports ) that is pretty amazing
and well-worth the money if you want something special. You can start with the
MIOLO Family Vineyards 2008 Merlot ( $16.99 ) as it is fleshier, rounder,
brighter and more fruit-driven and then pass to the " Amat " BODEGAS CARRAU
Tannat 2007 that is both earthier, more spicy and with more developed flavors
with more oak, too. I ask the question, too whether this Tannat is made from
100% Tannat grapes or is the law there for only 75-85% of the grapes necessary
when listed on the bottle? So much to learn, so much to know, so better get
cracking!
THESE ARE TWO WINES made not that far from one another and yet they are so
stylistically different and yet for my palate both are really quite excellent
and memorable examples of the grape variety and where they come from and I would
be delighted to drink either or both along with the bottle of the Recioto della
Valpolicella Azienda Agricola LA GIARETTA 2005 ( $39.99, 14% alcohol by volume,
500ml bottle ) to finish off the meal. I would have a bottle of the ENCOSTAS DO
LIMA Vinho Verde Colheita 2011almost as a palate-cleanser/refresher at this same
meal to give a break between the wines and the courses and to thus also add
accent and the proper attention to each and every wine here as well as the
accompanying foods.
FUNNY, and something that caught my attention immediately, the one and only
time that I saw the epically long and interesting-fascinating wine movie called
" Mondo Vino " it both started and ended in Brasil. I will have to watch it
again as I do not remember if any mention was made of any specific wineries
there or of any specific wine region. I have to assume that they were filming in
the Vale Dos Vinhedos? That makes sense from what little I know. It also makes
me really curious as I wonder if one of the people involved in the filming was
from Brasil or not? It all deserves more attention and I will be renting a copy
of the movie to watch again.
ANOTHER THING THAT I NOTICE as I connect all the dots is that all these
wines are 14% alcohol and less and I like that as especially with all this extra
heat and humidity and beating-down sunshine the lower alcohols are so much
easier to both enjoy and to absorb. You not only enjoy them better while you are
drinking them with your meal but you also probably feel a whole lot better later
as a result of this , too as there is less alcohol ( and in better balance with
the other components of the wine ) so as not to got to your head so quickly and
leave you with a pulsing headache as well. All good if you ask me.
STAY-TUNED FOR MUCH MORE INFORMATION and many more choices on these wines
as here in the United States and here in Washington D.C. very few people know
that they even make wine in either Brasil or Uruguay.
IT'S SO HOT and the haze and the humidity is holding us all down as we walk
along this stretch of Connecticut Avenue N.W. here in Washington D.C. People
walk a little more quickly as if trying to escape the pounding and that is
completely understandable.
I JUST HAD TWO YOUNG LADIES come to the store and look into our
refrigerator with cold sparkling and still wines. When I asked them if they
needed any help the one asked me if we had any really deals on cheap white
wines? I responded that we had deals on some " inexpensive " white wines and
immediately showed them the bottle of ANJOS De Portugal Vinho Verde ( $8.99,
9.5% alcohol by volume, with a slight sparkle for refreshment ) is made from the
indigenous grapes of 40% Arinto and 30% Trajadura and 30% Loureiro.
I TOLD THEM IT WAS THE BEST THING to drink now with all this heat and
humidity and I told them that was so because of the lower alcohol and the slight
sparkle. They objected immediately to the lower alcohol and I said that they
would have to trust me and report back to me if there were any problems on there
day-off and as I would be here all day. I told them my name as well. So far they
have not been here and so I hope that all is going smoothly and as planned.
Vamos a ver ...
BUT HEY, BEER & LIQUOR IS REFRESHING, TOO In ALL THIS HEAT, HAZE, HUMIDITY :
BEER From SANTOS -

hardly never would I say this BUT I might buy this six-pack just from the art
on the label. How does the label and the taste relate? Is there a correlation
between the two : imagined or real? The power of suggestion is intriguing and I
might just have to buy this from the label. I do have a really good sense,
however, that this will be a great summer/hot weather beer to help get through,
past and away from the heat and the haze and the humidity that dogged me through
the day. Worth checking out. Come by this Lithuanian beer and enjoy the taste
and telling stories about what the label might mean or suggest? Cheers.
3) Wheat beer, unfiltered, since 1989 from the BOULEVARD BREWING CO. (
$9.99 a 6-pack of 12 Oz. bottles, Kansas City, Missouri bottle-conditioned ) : "

1) The FURST Gewurztraminer 2010 ( $19.99 , 12.5% alcohol by volume) from
Kientzheim , Kaysersburg ( Haut Rhin ), Alsace, France is round and full and
generous and smooth, bright and rounded and has a wonderful and refreshing
mouth-feel and is a delight to sip with or without food. It showed beautifully
this weekend when Chris Bartha tasted it with our customers for Bastille Day!
Highly recommended.
ROSE : Dry -
1) " La Clape " Classique 2011 dry rose blend of 80% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah
and 10% Grenache, famille E. Fabre ) from the CHATEAU D'ANGLES is drinking like
another velvety, bright, fresh, rounded, generous yet toned dream that on the
very-first-taste is wonderful and pleasing and easing to one's palate! Again,

1) Vinho Regional Alentejano from Portugal, this " LOIOS " from J. PORTUGAL

dominated this region. Fresh and bright and forward and a great wine to chill
slightly and to enjoy even with all this pounding hear, haze, glaze, humidity
and heavy sunshine. Great for a picnic, too with the easy-to-open Stelvan
closure.
AND WHEN ALL IS SAID & DONE :
2) Pinot Noir " Terrazze " Italian Pinot Nero TENUTA MAZZOLINO from the
Provincia Di Pavia ( $16.99, 2011, 12.5% alcohol by volume - low alcohol once
again, easier on our systems ) is an absolute pleasure and delight to drink with
or without a meal as we return to from where we started this email : Italy! You
can enjoy this Pinot Nero/Noir even in this humidity and heat. Chill it thirty
minutes and enjoy it even sitting outside here on Connecticut Avenue N.W. in
this really hot summer weather. It is worth this $17 a bottle and more. The
