LABOR DAY TREATS here @ cleveland park wines

WE HAVE SO MANY things to celebrate with this weekend as we say :  " goodbye " to summer and " hello " to the fall as school starts back up for many households. It's a bittersweet moment as we are all forced to SQUEEZE the very last drops of spirits, fun, summer, sunshine and extra warmth and humidity, the last of the mosquitoes, too ... and turn to a more serious demeanor with more chores, obligations, rituals and jobs that we kept at bay for short periods of time as we relaxed and perhaps even turned off most of our electronic gizmos, too?! Is that even possible in today's day and age? Not as easy as it once was.

I WROTE THE ABOVE on August 28th, 2012, and it still rings true today, the heat today is dangerous and we all must stay hydrated and be careful with this intense heat!

COME SEE US, we have plenty for you here to stay cool and to enjoy some lively spirits even in this heat, like some Portuguese Vinho Verdes, like some cachaca to make  caipirinhas from Brazil, like some Limoncello from Sarento, Italy, like some Macchu to make Pisco Sours, some cider, some beer, some sangria, too - and MORE!

THANKS to both Aretha Franklin for being such a great queen of soul music, and John McCain for being the maverick that you are and staying true to your principles and fighting a fair fight. I liked hearing on the Today show this morning you say in your own words that no one is more fortunate or appreciative to be alive than you - something like that. I feel the same. Even when we as people disagree there are still more things that bring us together that we share than divide us. Cheers!

MARK CONGDON our rep from Bacchus Imports came to taste some great wines from the Peimonte region of Italy ( just like Ari Goldman came to taste, too - more great Piemontese wines coming our and your way first week of September ), Mark told me that Neil Simon the playwright just passed away - what a great loss, too! Such wonderful plays, some turned into memorable movies with Richard Dreyfus and more!

A LADY JUST CAME asking for some Gentiane that she told me her friends was really having trouble locating here in Washington D.C. She prefaced that with the comment that she was turning to us for help as we had always solved many of her searches and requests with the products she was after.

WHEN I HEARD THIS I thought to myself that I hope we have what she is looking for this time? She pronounced the name of what she was looking for and I told her that I had never heard of it. It was a French digestif and I was wondering what it was and explaining that I did not know it but we decided to look at what we had on our shelves. As we were scanning them she said : " what's that?! ".

SHE WAS POINTING TO a bottle of our BONAL Gentiane-Quina des Montagnes de la Grande Chartreuse ST. LAURENT-DU-PONT ( Isere ),  " an ouvre appetit depuis 1865 ". It's a QUINQUINA Vin Aperitif ( $19.99 a 750ml bottle, 16% alcohol by volume, once open keep chilled, product of France ? : " It is made by an infusion of cinchona ( Quinine ), gentian, and renowned herbs of the Grande Chartreuse mountains in a Mistelle base. As a Quinquina ( also known as " Kina ", an aperitif wine with chinchona. It is traditionally enjoyed neat, on ice with a twist, and in many classic mixed drinks ." It's called a Toni Aperitif de France. I like that. We only have three bottles left. It was out of stock at our distributor for awhile so come get some now if you are interested and celebrate Labor Day weekend with some BONAL! Cheers.

HERE'S ANOTHER RECIPE :

From our " A Taste Of Cleveland Park " from our old and dear friend Pam The Butcher Ginsberg :

LEMON SOLE FOR YOUR SOLE -

1 lb. filet of lemon sole    one-third c. white wine

2 roma tomatoes, chopped coarsely   Juice of one lemon

2 shallots, chopped finely   black pepper to taste

" Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place sole on cooking sheet that has been covered with foil for easy cleanup. All fish expands with heat. Cook sole for 4 to 5 minutes. While sole cooks, saute tomatoes and shallots in white wine, lemon and pepper. Remove sole from the oven. With slotted spoon remove tomatoes and shallots from pan, placing them on top of sole. Return sole to oven 8 to 9 minutes. Reduce heat on sauce by half. When sole is done, place sauce on bottom of plate with sole on top. "

MICHEL. WHAT DO YOU THINK? Did you all ever make this or a version of this at Liliana's? Would you have a Ligurian or a French wine with it? We are out of the Ligurian white that we normally sell here and so I will mention some French wines that I think might work brilliantly with this LEMON SOLE FOR YOUR SOUL recipe of Pam's :
     1) 2010 SAINT-BRIS " Clotilde Davenne " dry white Sauvignon Blanc ( On Special for $16.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, vin de Bourgogne/Burgundy. Made not far from the Chablis Burgundy region this unique Sauvignon Blanc from Burgundy has loads of extra body, flavor and taste to cut through and help frame better the distinct yet refined and aromatic, delicate flavors of sole and herbs and tomatoes to cradle our souls.
     2) 2011 " La Renaudie " Sec/ Dry 100% Sauvignon Blanc white from the town of Bergerac ( $14.99 a bottle, 13.5% alcohol by volume, a two-hour drive from the town of Bordeaux driving into the interior and not far from the caves of prehistoric drawings Caves le Lascaux.
THIS IS A BRIGHTER, rounder, fleshier-tasting Sauvignon Blanc that is easy-drinking before and with the meal of the lemon sole.
     3) 2011 Le Nectar des Fees in Saint-Pourcain from the Gardien Freres/Brothers. Celebrating a famous fairy tale this dry indigenous grape Tressalier only grows in these vineyards of Saint Pourcain that are reputed to be the oldest in France. It's quite dry with great mineral and soaring blasts of acids, too,
IT'S DEFINITELY A FOOD WINE, and will cut through all the flavors to be found in Pam's dish. It's also a great value and something unique with a great story. Google it and share it while you enjoy Pam's lemon sole this Labor Day.
     4) 2010 Palais Prive dry white from the Rhone Luberon region of France, this ( $20.99. 12.5% alcohol by volume, Caves de Bonnieux, 84480, France,  www.doyleprovence.com ) is also quite dry with bright bursts of minerals and tangy-accenting ripples of acidity , medium-bodied and after a glass as an aperitif you will welcome with open arms and palate some of Pam's lemon sole.
     5) 2006 Bourgogne Aligote Vieilles Vignes / Old Vines of DOMAINE Henri NAUDIN-FERRAND in Burgundy ( On Special for $17.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, www.naudin-ferrand.com ) is mature and complex and richly-layered and a very serious dry white food wine where mineral and even some nut and honey flavors are really turned up high so that they insinuate themselves, subtly infiltrate , permeate and saturate one's palate.
THE LEMON SOLE will float effortlessly on everyone's plate. Definitely a food wine : it will hold it's own against many flavorful/well-seasoned dishes. Not so much a sipping wine : too much flavor for that!
     6) 2010 Ondenc / Onsec Sec - indigenous dry French white grape variety -  Par Robert & Bernard Plageoles ( $27.99, 14.5% alcohol by volume, jennyandfrancois.com, info@jennyandfrancois.com ( 646 ) 322-4254 ) is a Jenny & Francois Selections' complex, multi-layered, golden-colored white that is rich and full and so thick on the palate with great feel and legs and flesh.
THIS IS AN  amazingly-refreshing, powerful mouth-full of wine that must be tasted to be believed. It's an experience all in itself and I include it as it will hold it's own to many a vegetable or side dish and will be a great way to bring closure to an already thoroughly delicious meal and moment.

I MIGHT RECOMMEND that you start with one of the other wines and then finish with this Ondenc? Why not, there are always various tastes in the foods served and it is not always easy to have one wine be the perfect foil or balance for all those flavors? You might even make Pam's dish and serve three or four of these wines and invite family and friends, neighbors, too and see what you all think? It's a simple yet really tasty recipe here that Pam has provided the Cleveland Park community. Thanks Pam. What do you think Michel? Let us know.

COME AND MIX these bottles and more and SAVE 20% on those over $20 a bottle. Also save 20% when you mix 12 or more of them - and any other still wines, too. SAVE 10% when you mix any of these or other still wines, you just need to buy 6 or more bottles to SAVE 10% OFF marked sticker prices. Call if you cannot come : 202-363-4265 - or respond to this email.

I cannot wait to taste it here this Friday, August 24th, from 5-8PM. JOIN US, come discover the distinct flavors of a fine Arinto. Cheers, obregado e ola Martta!
2) Adorada , an eau de California, a hommage, an essence of California that works so well, a scent, a smell, and in this glorious case, a taste, too. A 2016 Pinot Gris with elegance, refinement and finesse that I have enjoyed now twice, $19.99 a bottle, with 12% alcohol by volume _ I LOVE how they have held this alcohol in balance here. A delight to sip or enjoy with a meal, and a great clear bottle and melted-dripped black shiny wax top, head and long slopping shoulders, too. Dare I say s-xy?!? It is, come try some and enjoy it yourselves, and also offer it as gifts!
          THREE Dry ROSE Wines -
1) 2017 M MINUTY Cotes du Provence, $21.49, so delicately smooth, polished and whispers and wisps of all things married blissfully together in Provence southern France with the Mediterranean sea there to refresh everything it touches from grapes growing and ripening to lips touched to both wine glass and these sublime contents.
2) EstRosa from Tenuta Pietraventosa, a dry 90% Primitivo and 10% Aglianico dry rose from Murgia, Gioia del Colle, Puglia, 2016, certified organic, a deep rich welcoming rose color that borders on red - so vibrant, so delightful, and the taste is sublime, smooth, rich, full and you bask in the captured sunshine within - lovely, highly recommended to almost guarantee joy and several smiles, a purr or two, a sigh of relief and release ooohhhhh yeah!$18.99 a bottle,. come get some.
3) Tavel dry southern Rhone French rose, a 2017 at $17.49 that over-delivers for this price! From the CHATEAU DE SEGRIES , with 14.5% alcohol by volume, this is a delectable delight, too - more body, more edge, more girth and firm gut, this is fabulous with  many a hot-weather or flavorful or seasoned meal. Oui oui oui!
THREE Dry Reds -
1) Carmenere 2013 ' Linen ' from BERGEVIN LANE Vineyards, in Walla Wall, Washington State, On Special for $14.99, this Carmenere has really good medium-to-lighter-body, distinct fruit and acid overtones in balance, a brightness-rightness that with food will work so well, a price that is great, and you can try it here tomorrow when Michele Hunt the national sales manager for the past 20 years comes to taste it with you all from 5-8PM! Michele will also taste other fine wines in her portfolio, so join her and our local owner-rep from GLOBAL WINES, MD, Narayan Campbell, this is so bright and lively and showing so well. I just enjoyed the Linen Sauvignon Blanc this past Sunday and it was really refreshing and bright with just enough acidity to carry all the flavors.
2) 2013 Napa County Meritage red wine from WHEELHOUSE, On Special as well for $14.99 a bottle, with14% alcohol by volume, this is a blend that is hard at first opening but that does inflate and expand and show the hidden fruit within that escaped me at first. I was initially prepared to nix it but then it opened nicely like the tulip does to reveal a glory inside hidden at first.
3) 2016 Red wine The BOATMAN, $16.49, with 13.7% alcohol by volume, : " The Boatman Red is the ideal red wine to open any night of the week. Enjoy it with cheese, or paired with your meat or pasta main - with its notes of bright red fruit and soft tannins, it's a go-to everyday wine you should always have on hand. " Twist-off, will ask Chris what he thought, as it is always good to get different opinions on these wines we offer you. Cheers.

INVITE YOUR Family and friends to join us, too - the more the merrier.

I'M Back From My Vacation and my drive to work this morning bathed in a cooling breeze, baby blue skies and sunshine sure did help. Less traffic, too. I don't even have ' vacation blues '. Yes, I would have loved to have another week off, that would have been glorious, very marvelous. But I'm thankful for the time that I had with family and friends, that wonderful serendipitous realization of things planned, expected and totally spur-of-the-moment.

YOU JUST NEVER QUITE know what will happen : washes over you, knocks you down sometimes, makes you stand up sometimes, too. My immediate family journeyed once again to the ocean, the pull was irresistible, always is. And we had the added treat of having everyone still want to be with us for a week there protected by the gentle sway of the sea oats, the sand dunes and the seagulls, sandpipers, pelicans, sand crabs, cocinas and dolphins, too. Each year brings different groups, times, places and experiences for us all.

THE BEER, FOOD, WINE, ... the books, the pool and the hot tub, the day and night excursions to the beach. I rediscovered the night treks to the beach and was surprised to see how few others were out and about once the sun said adieu to us all and the many bog and small crabs scurried along the white sands and even dared to venture up and down the ever-changing yet constant attack and retreat of the waves.

JUST LIKE IN THE DAYTIME the sandpipers would scurry quickly up-and-back from the edge of the waves and try their luck at plucking quickly tasty treats revealed in the shifting sands. They clearly did not like to get their feet wet and were all very adept and expert and accomplishing their purposes.

THE CRABS did the same at night but were inconvenienced by both the bright flashlight glare from Mark and me, being forced to suddenly protect their sand turf! If they had fur like cats that would have been standing at attention, instead here it was just their two beady eyes multiplied by many others all around them that glared boldly-intently back at us. I was smart to have not picked one up, to have dared to have held one. Mark was more daring that I was and he paid the ultimate painful price of having been pinched deeply by an indignant yet strong big white crab.

THE BEER & THE WINE tasted good along with the food. I took lots of wine, Mark took care of the beer. No one went thirsty, no one went hungry as we all chipped in and made our individual signature meals to share with one another. You know, family, we love one each other, we share with each other.

THE PUZZLE WENT QUICKLY this year, there were also card and board games, which are your favorites? You can do those anywhere, anytime, you can read, you can laze, you can push your limits, you can craze , too a bit more than usual if you wish. It's nice and comforting to know that the distance is short to get back to your bed as well, only the distance of the sand dunes and those gentle swaying sea oats to brush and push you along with their comforting and soft sway.

I TOOK WINE pretty much for any occasion, and the beer went from Budweiser cans to DOGFISH HEAD, NEWCASTLE Brown Ale, diet coke, lots of coffee, bottled waters, tea : pretty much a constant low-flame party all the time, with ring leaders and players, watchers, those that doze through it all, you know - cat naps - the very young, the teens, the older, the whole span of years. The ease and the comfort and the time to finally relax.

I DID MY ART through all of this, notebooks of oil pastels and some real experimenting, putting things to the test, pushing the limits and myself and working both at night and at day, always outside, subject to the weather and the winds that twice blew my pages off into the landscape below and even into our pool. Everything survived, it was all okay to me, whatever happened happened and whatever bruises were incurred through it all were the badges of bravery and daring that I champion and treasure.

BUT HEY, Let's see what I found when I walked the aisles here to bring you all some of this past week's " goodies ". Here is what I find from :

ALE, BEER, CIDER From SANTOS :

This beer is lavishly dry-hopped with Simcoe, adding a citrusy and piney flavor and aroma to the toasty, sweet malt notes. This special treat is a very limited release, so enjoy it while you can. "

AND FOR ME it is also the name of a great album that came out in the sixties called : " King Crimson, In The Court Of The Crimson King " that I highly recommend that you listen to as you enjoy this Red Ale. I will have to do this myself. Just look at the cover of the album and you will get the immediate idea that you are in for an experience that may literally blow your mind and senses!

LOVELY, WORTH IT, yes, whatever the consequences, be damned, allow yourselves to stretch farther and dream longer and have your daydreams melt into your night-dreams and refresh and cleanse and brighten your flagging spirits and soul that are so worth fighting for and saving. You save another and they save you right back. Sounds perfectly logical to me, don't you agree?!?

     3)  " Book Ends " 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Western Australia's Denmark region and made by WEST CAPE HOWE ( $21.99, 14% alcohol by volume , go to : www.westcapehowewines.com.au for more info.

Winemaker Gavin Berry has often been here in the past ) : This is what dreams are made of - pure silky melting, wafting, lilting, a waterbed of ease, a tease of a swing in a rope hammock made of a grape's silk that will offer no resistance, just the purity of liquid taste and one's taste buds meeting effortlessly, and with surprise and ripe pleasure, discovering something new, discovering a part of you that you had forgotten you had.

Wonderful. I should have taken a bottle to the beach, it would have been well-received indeed, of that I am sure.

     4) " La Croix Blanche " Bourgogne Rouge 100% Pinot Noir from the DOMAINE Armelle et Bernard Rion Vielle Vignes - Old Vines 2009 that was tasted with us with owner Armelle ( $22.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, ) : Michel and I were very impressed with it three months ago. It must have been delightful when tasted here this past weekend? I am sorry I missed it, should have taken a bottle of it, too to the beach with me. What a treat with our shrimp or decadent homemade-by-yours-truly it would have been!

     5) AN/2 by ANIMA NEGRA, vin de la terra Mallorca , 2010 ( $24.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, Falanis, 07200 ) : made with a blend of indigenous grapes : Callet, Manto Negre and Fogoneu - 80% of the wine, using both American and French oak.

THIS IS an experience to be treasured, taken slowly as the flavors, the bouquet, the essence of the red and beefy, earthy, pungent, perfumed, tarred, leathered, feathered, furnished, fleshed-out flavors and savors have a chance to take center stage and center-palate and perform and blossom and blazon a trail all their own along the surface and nooks and crannies of your palate, gullet, stomach, soul, head, fingers and tippy-tip-toes ...

AND SETTLE AS A FINE EMBER in the pit of your guts with the time they need, NEVER to be rushed, can't do that, can't rob yourselves of the full experience. This is a full-Monty experience indeed. Try it on for size, fit and feel and have some food, too as it's foremost a food wine - from Mallorca.

YOU WILL BE WASHED BY THE WAVES, you will be challenged, you may sleep on the sands, you may have that chance finally under the protective wings of these indigenous grapes from Mallorca, and the fine breezes that move ever so gracefully the sea oats of our beaches here, too ...

ON VACATION or not, no matter, enjoy this incredible AN/2 dry red from Mallorca, $24.99.

          SPARKLING :

     1) Butterfly Moscato Sparkling white from Moldova's Cahul region ( On Special for $9.99, reg. $12.99, 11.5% alcohol by volume , go to : www.acorex.net for more info ) : Michel and I liked this a whole lot both for the price, the lightness and the refreshing quality of the Moscato grape here that is not as sweet as it usually is. It holds a bit back, it tempts and teases and pleases, but it always stays enjoyable. Really great balance. What a VACATION DEAL!
