and
Robert Kennedy ...

each with 4-5 bubblies for you all to enjoy, five ladies, one man ( I included Robert Kennedy because he has been nice to let us use his fine wine-tasting glasses here again for this event. It helps to better taste and appreciate, thanks Robert. WE asked Robert to come with his wife, but she is very shy, and so she will be here with us we taste, and she does love the bubbly of Silvia Cassali in Emilia, not far from her home.

TABLE ONE - Robert Kennedy of his own Robert Kennedy Imports specializing in small family-owned Italian wineries in Italy.

1) Prosecco from Valdobbiadene in Veneto ( the area that grows the fines Gerla grapes for Prosecco ), from RONFINI, $18.99, a fuller, a richer more saturating delicate lovely sunshine-trapped-in-each-bubble taste! Love this.

2) Villa Zappi dry rose from Emilia, from TENUTA CASSALI ( named after Mr Zappi that was on the expedition to discover the North Pole, as he is from owner-winemaker  Silvia's area ), $$18.99 a bottle - such delicate flavors yet full and pleasing and that coats ever so silkily our tongues and palates.

3) Piria Lambrusco di Sorbara, vino frizzante secco , a fuller rose or a delicate light red color, such fresh strawberries and an accent of cranberry or maybe toasty cherries?!? So easy to sip, so lively and bright and pleasing, $14.49 a bottle. A treat.

4) Nebbiolo ( Barolo and Barbaresco grape of Piemonte, Italy ) Brut rose from ETTORE GERMANO ( we had Sergio Germano come and taste it here with Robert about a month ago ), $32.99 a bottle - I loved the whole wonderful pleasing seductive ' mouth-feel ' that made my taste-buds quite reel! Enough said, a treat, such brightness, rightness, lovely.

5) Chardonnay Extra Brut 2008 magums ( 1.5ml bottle size, two regular bottles worth ), On Special for $59.99 a bottle. With plenty of bottle-age, available only in these beautiful magnum bottles, this is an amazing deal , taste, complexity, sophistication, and great price, too. You have more to enjoy so invite someone over : make it a party, celebrate!

TABLE TWO ( with Theresa Morrison pouring four choices ) :

1) Expresion Extra Brut from MI TERRUNO, Argentina, 12.5% alcohol by volume, this is so subtle I love it, did immediately, and bought almost immediately once I tasted it, a lovely floral fragrant delicate, yet rich-tasting bubbly!

2) Malbec sparkling 2016 vintage-dated brut rose from California's Mendocino region, made from organic-grown grapes, from their Rennie Vineyard site, made by YORKVILLE CELLARS, Britis husband and wife making really bright, fresh, complex, balanced expressions from the soils there, yes yes yes!

3) Rose Garnatxa Negra , Reserve de la Musica, 2014, sparkling Spanish Cava, : what a glorious color - rich, full-bloom-blossom yes, a lovely way to kick back and relax and feel positively great about everything!

4) Champagne LA CARAVELLE Blanc de Blancs from France, NM, Epernay, $49.99 : travel the seas, travel the lands - always have a bottle of this creamy bright expression of 100% Chardonnay grapes, with 12% alcohol by volume - si, oui, vraiment excelllent!

TABLE THREE : Franceen Kahng of Vias Imports pours fine Italian holiday wines - the spectrum, some with more sparkle than others - all with tremendous spark!

1)  Prosecco Extra Dry from ACINUM, DOP, $13.99 a bottle, with 11% alcohol by volume, tremendously flavorful for a Prosecco, lots of backbone, lots of grit , grip, girth and great range from highs to lows and mid range flavors, too : a grand roller-coaster ride for your taste-buds, great with food! Si si si!

2) Moscato D'Asti from STEV, $16.49 , a vintage-dated Moscato with 5.5% alcohol by volume, a more layered, structured, finely-tuned-toned bottle here. I remember tasting this with Franceen when she brought the owner himself with her. I liked their differences, their ranges. All they make is different Moscatos that reflect the different soils from which they came, as Nature intended, as they have completely respected here : little ' works of art'!

3) Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, a red spumante from Emilia, Italy, : " elegant and delicate wine, with notes of spice and fruit. This young vibrant wine can be enjoy d alone, or as an aperitif with a snack. " I have not tasted this, but I trust both Franceen Kahng and Vias Wines, a 2016 vintage-dated, from TENUTA PEDERZANA, $17.99 a bottle. I cannot wait to try it. Cheers!

4) Brachetto D'Acqui ' Pineto ' from MARENCO, this famous holiday and Valentine's Day slightly-sparkling red wine from Piemonte . Italy is a glassic. Take flight on the wings of the two geese / swans on the front label, soar to lofty new and exciting heights, yes, si si si si si!

TABLE FOUR  -  Christina Thornton of Winesellers LTD pours both hemispheres ) :

TWO From Argentina - one organic of SANTA JULIA

1) Brut rose, Mendoza, Argentina, I alsolutely loved this when I tasted it with Christina on her last visit here I believe. I loved it, and tomorrow we celebrate Christina's new addition to her family, what a joy that is at holiday time, cheers Christina, this is such a nice-sipping spumante, really so pleasing.

2) Blanc de Blancs , made with organic grapes, from Mendoza, AR, $14.49, with 13% alcohol by volume, this is so much more complex, so many more layers, so much more weight and body! I enjoy this with some food, some appetizers are great, a meal divine! Coppi's organic restaurant may be serving some tomorrow, too, go by and ask bartender Ric if he has a glass for you to enjoy with some of the  excellent organic food there?

3) Riesling Sekt Extra Trocken , Sektellerei FITZ KG, from Bad Durkheim, Pfalz, Germany. Dry Riesling, $23.49 a bottle, with 12% alcohol by volume, this is amazing each and every time that I try it. A great bubbly to enjoy with many a meal. Enjoy some here then go dine at any of the restaurants around here , get their take-out perhaps, and drink it with whatever you choose. Cheers. It is made by our fine friend from Boston, Alice Fitz, named after her, now I think her children may be taking a greater role here? I will ask Christina. Cheers! Prosit! Terry made me aware that I had been spelling Prosit wrong, leaving the ' i ' out, thanks Terry!

4) Champagne BESSERAT De BELLEFON " Cuvee des Moines " Brut, $47.49 with 12.5% alcohol by volume, from Epernay, France. We started a long time ago with this from Chassity our old Winesellers rep, she got us all excited about both this, the vintage-dated, as well as the dry rose. Come try this on for size, fit and feel! Cheers!

TABLE FIVE - with Libby Edwards of Diamond District Wines pouring -

1) Txakoli  2016 Getariako Txakolina from REZABAL, with 11% alcohol by volume, $8.49 a bottle, with just a softer, more delicate effervescence, lighter body, too : when you want the brightness, the refreshing lightness and spark of sparkle to match more readily with many a meal, and which will complement you and elevate you even if tired as you celebrate with family and friends, From the Basque country, a lovely treat.

2) PinotNero, Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay dry rose Veneto, Italy blend - great color and extraction, fine firm mouth-feel, zeal to lift and cheer us on, a darker rose color in this OMBRA, $18.49 a bottle, a Brut, with 12% alcohol by volume, perfect for this colder weather.

3) Dry French sparkling rose from HENRY VARNAY , $13.99 a bottle, with 12% alcohol by volume, really liked the fullness, the richness, the complete mouth-feel of this that really pleased us all immediately here the other night when we revisited it to see where it was in it's development? So pleasing to sip all by itself, yes , si si si si si!

BRING A FRIEND or more, everyone welcome.

WE STAR Started our year strongly with the Women's March and support for them in their peaceful marching for equality and control of their own bodies and what they decide for themselves without interference from government or society.

WE SOON REALIZED that the month of January 2017 was not enough time to be heard, be seen, be answered, be fully accepted and respected in public and in our work places. So the whole year of 2017 we have devoted to this worthy pursuit, and looks like 2018 we will continue.
We support men, too of course, that goes without saying, especially those that support us all in our quest to finally get women equality , control of their own bodies, equal pay in the workplace, a safe workplace, too where they feel accepted, included, and treated for the wonderful support, work and success they bring to both our workplaces and homes and communities.
WE are nothing without each other. We are so much less when not working together for all of our greater good. Yes! Si! Oui! Much to still do.

AND BUBBLY really does make a difference and bring a whole lot of smiles warmth and good cheer to us all.

THIS is PART ONE of a Two--Part BUBBLY Celebration here ( the PART TWO is on Wed. December 27th, 2017 5:30-8:30PM , $10 a person, and with another 25+ new bubblies to experience, not a repeat of tomorrow's tasting ).

NOTHING WRONG with being ready for things as you never know what things will be thrust upon you at any minute and that you will need to deal with immediately and put everything else that you had planned on hold till you can get to them. WE HAVE MADE A BIG POINT to find sparkling wines and champagnes that you do not already know or that you have not tried here before. That's a big task as we have been doing these annual Big-Theme BUBBLY wine-tastings here now for years. We have sampled and tasted many from all over the world , in all different styles and grape varieties, from bone-dry to quite sweet, from the charmat process to the methode champenoise. It has always been a grand adventure for us as there are great discoveries to be made everywhere in the world, from the very well-known to the obscure and unexpected, shocking, who would have ever believed?!?

THE THING THAT MOST OF YOU DO NOT KNOW is how much work behind the scenes goes into these BUBBLY wine-tastings. We rely heavily on the help of our suppliers, brokers, resp, wholesalers, owners and wine-makers, etcetera to accomplish this as so often they have that which we are less-familiar with. Tomorrow we will have six tables pouring bubbly, sparkling wine and champagne. We want to thank them and their companies for their invaluable time and the samples that they bring to pour that make this the great success that it is each year. We could not do it without them! A big round of applause for them now please!!! Cheers, prost, bottom's up!

HERE ARE SOME OR ALL of our selections :

TABLE # ONE :    With Regis of Roanoke Imports :

     1) AGAPART  Non-Vintage Les 7 Cru Brut Blanc de Blanc Reserve Grand Cru champagne from Avize, Recoltant-Manipulant, $49.99

     2) ANDRE CLOUET,  Non-Vintage Brut Grand Reserve 100% Pinot Noir,  Grand Cru champagne  , Recoltant-Manipulant, from Bouzy , Champagne,  $54.99
ALSO : Available in the Magnum ( 1.5 ml ) bottle size at $114.99 a bottle.

     3) MICHEL ARNOULD ,  from Verzenay, Champagne,  Non-Vintage Brut rose, 100% Pinot Noir, Grand Cru champagne , $49.99

     4) GATINOIS Rose , from Ay, Champagne, Non-Vintage Brut, 90% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay,  Grand Cru champagne, $62.99

     5) GATINOIS Non-Vinatge Brut, from Ay, Recoltant-Manipulant, Grand Cru champagne, $52.99

NOTE : Grand Cru means the very best grapes grown in champagne, and that's 5% or less. Recoltant-Manipulant means that the grapes are owned, grown and harvested by the owners and that they have not bought grapes from others to use in the process. This gives them complete control from start to finish.

In the past these small family-owned vineyards in these small villages of Champagne may have sold their grapes to the larger, better-known champagne houses. Now with many small and quality-oriented distributors they are being encouraged to bottle their own champagne, or at least to sell it here in the United States.

If these small family vineyards in these small villages of Champagne do not know what they are doing , then they would be out of business quickly, so we have to assume that they know what they are doing and that they can do it really well with fewer stumbling blocks as they are in control of everything and not at the mercy of others. This is very important to note as they put all their money, efforts and passion into the making of a great product/ champagne and not into the advertising with glossy pictures in expensive magazines. Please make a note of all of this. Thanks, merci beaucoup!

     4) Cremant De Bourgogne dry non-vintage French brut from Celine Et Laurent Tripoz, 100% Chardonnay grapes, $23.99

NOTE : Cremants and many sparkling wines have fewer bubbles and bigger bubbles. Some also have less pressure in them and so they do not all not need to have corks and wire closures around the corks to keep the bottles safe. Many of these are very popular because they are less expensive and also because they are easier on our systems and with less bite and acidity. They are often not as tart or tangy and may be enjoyed equally as well on their own as with a meal. There are many champagnes that are more acquired tastes and some overtones of bread and yeast and even some vanilla and oxidation and that really benefit enormously from being paired with certain foods. Tomorrow we will have a full assortment and many of these issues may be addressed if you ask one of the people pouring. They may speak specifically to each and every bottle that they pour and give you the information you need of how to best enjoy the bubbly you ultimately decide to buy.

DON'T BE SHY : ask questions, GET ANSWERS! That's why we are still here even with all the competition : to help you and answer your needs and inquiries and to make you time-off more enjoyable and beneficial we hope.
