It's Thanksgiving Time Again Time o Reflect, Gather Together And Celebrate!

IT'S TIME once gain for us all to reflect, to gather together and to celebrate. I read an article in the Washington Post a few days ago that spoke about Thanksgiving being a holiday that traditionally has been to gather and to honor and appreciate our elders, the oldest in our families that have inspired us, provided, done , sacrificed always for us. As we get older we become I believe even more aware of that. I have thought so much these days of my mother and what she has done for my brothers and me over the years, the same, but in different ways as our father did for us. I miss my father and I love them both and appreciate what they have provided me with to best cope, to better flourish, to continue to advance, to add something, to give back more than I have received, to be humble and be honest and to not just do the very obvious that takes care of only myself. Life is a compromise and it is a difficult one and the thanks we often get is just in knowing that what we are doing and have done so far is and was the right and the best thing to do.

MY GRANDPARENTS are gone and no longer with me. I miss them, too as they also have given me many inspirations to keep me well and productive, keen and observant, playful and warm and alive and wanting to dive into the chaos that is life happening and changing, morphing and winding and soaring high, drilling deep low , and exploding like so many fireworks. so many sparklers lit by us or by others, sometimes right under our derrieres to get the desired rewards, to hit certain goals!

I AM glad that I read that article. It helps to put it back into perspective for me as I rush forward to provide whatever I can for my family, for my Virginia community and my D.C. neighborhood. I am fully invested in all, and I love being a part of so many things greater than I. I cede my place to others, I share the limelight, I redirect the spotlight, I try and never lose track, too when selling wine and other spirits of the grains and hops, and grapes from which they are coaxed, nourished, weened , worked into, sculpted like a fine liquid piece of shining art.

GIVE THANKS to those around me, to that which inspires, that which challenges and teases and pleases and puzzles me, too. My ' big beef '  remember the ads that had the older lady exclaiming : " Where's the beef ?!? "  is that I want to with everyone at Cleveland Park Wine And Spirits ' give and get ' you THE BEEF!  We need the beef, the grape, the grain, the apple, the apricot, the cassis, the raspberry, the corn, the cherry pits, ... whatever it is that makes the liquid spirits that we treasure and that so do add to our lives.

ON THIS THANKSGIVING as well as all those still to come that is what we aim to share and to offer you all. he core, the source, the spirit and soul of whatever it is that you desire. We are selling some of all of it, whatever we can buy and resell to you all whether it be an ale, a beer, a cider, and bottled water, a liqueur or a liquor or a wine. And we want to be as honest and as upfront about it, explain whatever we can, and offer as much information as we possibly can to make the moments of these holidays all the more special for you and your families.

THAT'S THE IDEA, THAT'S OUR DREAM, THAT'S OUR GOAL ; simple as that. That is what we can do for you and to do that best we ask you to trust and believe in us and what we are advising : which is some of what you are asking and some of which we are sharing and suggesting. Scary and fun, exciting and an adventure of sorts, too.

WE WERE INFORMED recently that certain wines would be advertised in the Washington Post newspaper ( now as well online ), and the online always gets published earlier than the actual Washington Post newspaper that gets delivered on the day itself that I love to hold and to read as I find time. It's a great pleasure to me.

I WAS SO THRILLED to be able to tell our new customers recently, Kevin and Mary that both work for the Washington Post this as I wheeled out their wine to the car in back. It was smiling, I was beaming as I said this to them. Then the next morning I was reading Kevin's article and that made me feel really good, too as he had just returned from reporting and gathering information on it to write it. I like that, I like it a whole lot.

THEY HAVE A PARTY, I believe it's tonight and I was recommended to them and so Mary came asking me if I was Tom I believe she said? " No. " I responded, " I'm Tony. " That's it. " she said apologizing with a broad smile covering her face as she did. We talked about the time frame, the number of people, and how much they would need for their party. She asked about some Scotch and we also spoke of vodka I believe, We selected those and then we started on the beer and the wine. I had lots of suggestions for her as it was a large party and the tab was on her and not to be shared by everyone. I made many suggestions and she simply said finally : " I'm going to let my husband make those decisions, bring him back here, we can do it together later. " I said that would be fine and so much later that same day, I had since sold many cases and bottles and six-packs, 4-packs, so many single bottles that I was exhausted and happy and so, once again the three now of us were off on this mission to provide for their evening party tonight!

IT WAS FUN, AN EXPERIENCE that started with the single question : " Should we limit it to just a couple of wine choices? " I said : " Are you kidding me?!? If you ask me we should provide lots of variety, make it fun and interesting and a real adventure to anyone wanting or willing to embark on one. You have ten or more foods for people to choose from and you want to limit the sprits, wine and beer to just two or three? Are you serious?!? " Of course I did not say it quite that way, but that is what I was thinking. They took my advice. Together we selected many wines for them to enjoy and some beer, too and I am expecting now the very best/ I feel confident, but we will all have to wait and see what happens tonight.

THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER YOU for your Thanksgiving, lots and lots of choices, some obvious, some trendy and popular and obvious today and many more that are not , that are traditional, that are also fitting, and many that will surprise you and your family and friends that will soon enjoy them this Thursday as well as over the next five weeks during the holidays season that brings 2014 to a close and ushers in 2015!

AS I SAID, we were made aware of some of the wines that will be suggested for this Thanksgiving, as well as some bubbly , champagne and sparkling wines, as well as other still wines for the holidays. We have already been selling a whole lot of one of them and are delighted to hear that the Washington Post will be recommending it.

IN THE WASHINGTON POST on this Wednesday the CHATEAU GRAND TRAVERSE Gamay, $19.99  from Michigan will be suggested. We love it, we have already tasted it with many of our customers and already sold many bottles. It is so smooth, so silky, no edges, just pure and fresh and bright, a lighter-bodied dry red that tastes like a Pinot Noir and that is FABulous and from Michigan, too. Who would have ever thunk?!? Not many, but those from Michigan are proud and happy that we are selling and recommending their wine!

I WILL BE RECOMMENDING some American wine to start so at least you know we have some to enjoy, staring with the On Special CHATEAU BIANCA Willamette Valley Oregon 2009 dry Riesling at $9.99 that is now drinking like a dream. it's wonderful, has everything to offer and we are thrilled to have it! Get some while supplies last.

I STARTED MY DAY here walking in and saying " hello " to Malkit and also "
hello " lo Leon. Leon has been a customer here now for years and it was
great to see him as usual as he schlepes here all the way from across town
to shop with us. SO : here is Leon's story as he just returned from a
glorious two-week trip to both England and Scotland.

LEON TARLANT is a retired U.S. Airforce veteran and he returned recently to
the town of Kings Lynn not far from Cambridge where he was stationed during
the war. So he relates that : " It weighed no my conscious, if I wanted to
go to heaven ... " Leon was referring to the fact that 57 years later her
returns to Kings Lynn to pay a delinquent hotel bill at The Globe hotel (
it is a 400 year-old coaching house with nine bars today. Leon says of the
people there in Kings Lynn : " imbibers in those days. " Leon owed them a
pound and did not pay it because he did not have the money then. He also
did not return to pay it before leaving England 57-58 years ago.

Anyway when Leon returned he said  " they thought he was some nut - a Yank
nut, ha , ha. " They called the papers, had someone come and take a picture
that they wrote up and put on the front page.

" I have the copies of it. I'll bring you one. It's funny. Just an old guy
embracing a young lady manager of the Hotel Globe. We didn't kiss. Just
embraced. " I asked Leon what she thought of all of this?

" Oh yeah, she was smiling. It was astounding to her, to them. " Leon
continued to recount. " She called over the manager. The original hotel
bill was $2.50 for the night. They refused my money. I gave them 5 pounds.
I could not pay the interest on a pound after 57 years! "

" Afterwards we went to The Maid's Head and had a pint of delicious ale
avec prawns, very good seafood there. " Leon finished his story with a
smile. Thanks for sharing this Leon. I cannot wait to see the local paper
and the picture of you. That will be fun. You stayed in London and had
current stories about London to share as well. They will all have to wait
till the next store email.

I can see you Leon drinking a pint of the India Ale from SAMUEL SMITH in
the Maid's Head bar afterward, $4.99 a 1 Pt. 2.7 Fl. Oz bottle, 5% alcohol

with a slight salmon or peach color. Dry.
2) DCL'S " Kingston Black " Hard Cider, $11.99, bone-dry like a flavorful
Pouilly-Fume - tasty, crisp, tart, tangy, razor-sharp, needs a meal to soften it
up, tenderize it some ... lovely, lovely price. Thanks for the great tasting
Ron!

TWO TASTED By Andrew Stover  here:

1)  CHATEAU GRAND TRAVERSE Gamay Noir Old Mission Peninsula 2011 dry red,
$18.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, www.cgtwines.com, from Traverse City, Michigan,
USA ) is like a really nice cru beaujolais and nice to enjoy this Thanksgiving.
Medium-to-light bodied, bright, lively, fresh, energetic and so versatile with
many foods and flavors. Cheers.

2) " Mangus " ARIZONA STRONGHOLD dry red blend, a 2011 ( $28.99 a bottle,
14.5% alcohol by volume, www.Azstronghold.com , from Cochise County, Arizona )
is a delightfully well-balanced medium-to-lighter-bodied red of 69% Sangiovese.
13% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It's
a beauty! Perfect for the Turkey Bird of T-Giving!

FROM BRAZIL :  Great For The Bird :

1) DA'DIVAS 2010 Chardonnay from Serra Gaucha, Brazil from LIDIO CARRARO (
$16.99, 13% alcohol by volume, www.lidiocarraro.com ) has great focus, firm
flesh flavors and character and body. It's the full package and will make a
really nice wine to enjoy during the holiday season. Just sold a case and had to
get some more for the customer as for our shelf. Also bought more of the Merlot
( $15.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, ) that they are pouring by the glass down our
block here at PULPO is it? I think so? It's also got great structure and body,
character and another great food choice with again low alcohols. Made in the
European style by 4th generation Italians from the Veneto region. BOTH are
recommended. PULPO is on a roll, doing a great job with general manager Dave
Hansen on board now. Cheers.

SAKE :

1) Niguri Imported YAEGAKI NIGORI , $18.99, 16% alcohol by volume, 720ml
bottle,  : " Well balanced silky and creamy texture is complemented by a touch
of sweetness, yet enough acidity maintains it's refreshing finish. Keep
refrigerated to maintain its original taste after opening. Shake well before
serving. "

UPDATES :

1) OUR SATURDAY TASTING :

a) Ron Miller of the DISTILLERY LANE CIDERWORKS in Jefferson, Maryland,
was a HUGE SUCCESS and we have lots of them to sell you including the " new ".
it was just bottled that morning Ron tells us,
1)the Celebration Hard Cider with some cranberry juice added, $19.99,
everybody loved it - so fresh and bright and so easy to enjoy all by itself,
with a slight salmon or peach color.
Ron!

b) I poured the EASTON 2012 Amador County Zinfandel, $20.99, 14.5% alcohol,
California, go to : www.eastonwines.com ) : smooth, bright, fruit up-front, no
edge, medium-bodied, a delight to sip on it's own as well as to enjoy even with
turkey as it is not heavy at all, elegant and refined, polished and bright.
Cheers!

2 ) Our Friday Tasting with Fernando of Peru with Tradewinds Specialty
Imports poured :

a) 2010 Temperamento  100% Bobal indigenous red grape, $17.99, 13.5%
alcohol by volume, this Bobal  variety from Spain's Utiel Requena region that is
softer fruit-forward, bright and toasty-roasted berry flavored, medium-bodied, a
real treat : best with food like white meats and things marinated and grilled!

b) 100% Garnacha Tintorera or Allicante Bouschet grapes from PASAMONTE,
this 2010 Spanish red from Valencia is leaner, a bit meaner, more muscle and
firmness, less roundness, more of a food wine with great balance and accents of
pepper and spice. It really does need a meal. What fun, $18.99, 14% alcohol by
volume, gracias Fernando!

These are some of the wines I sold and enjoyed drinking, too while working at the Mayflower Wine And Spirits. I got to know both Andrea Fossi and Alessandro Furlan. This is the 1959 Chianti Classico from Andrea and his father, the Reserva , 12.7 alcohol by volume.  he dry white AI di CASTELCOSA bt Franco Furlan / Alessandro's father / , too ... and I have my own home-made vinegar in them now. Andre Fossi will be in the store, Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits tasting his wines on Friday, November 21st, 2014 from 5 to 8PM  JOIN US< NEVER any charge! This will be great, trust me. We had the FOSSI Chianti Classico wines going back to the 1958, and we would regularly taste them with our customers. What a great and special treat that was. Cheers,   TONY   11/ 16 / 2014

  • Paul Jameson I remember the '58 Fossi. Found my notes. Bought at Eagle on 8/12/78 for $9.99. Opened 10/21/78. On the scoring system I was using then, I gave it 12 1/2 pts, which rated as Very Good.

I had a second bottle of the '58 on 10/3/79, and my notes read, "Perhaps it has been open too long, but tastes considerably more past peak than when I had it a year ago. Still quite nice."
