Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

IT'S TIME FOR OUR Mostly Italian Sparkling Wine-Tasting tonight from 5-8PM - No
Charge - Everyone always welcome - when we explore the many regions of Italy
that produce great sparkling wines , world-class, that are not so well-known,
even today. We are trying to change that and make them better-known, and have
them come alive on your taste buds in such magnificent ways. These ways, too are
endless, so varied and fine and so different all of them that it's like a whole
new world opens to all of us! Come taste and see and discover for yourselves. We
have five people passionate about what they are doing and believe in these
products. Their enthusiasm will come through and it is contagious and you will
catch whatever they have!!

COME ENJOY DISCOVERING ... :  1) Sangue Di Giuda Dell'Oltrepo Pavese ' Costiolo
' CONTE VISTARINO that is a delicately sweet red : " unmistakable fruity and
rich in aroma ... Costiolo is the perfect refreshing summer drink and may be
paired well with dessert, cookies, peaches, berries, creams and spicy foods." I
remember the really satisfying ' mouth feel '. a delightful mouth-saturation
that spread to all my senses, bathing, caressing, pleasing and teasing - like
the occasional gentle breeze that catches you while swinging in an open hammock
in the spring and summer outdoors...

DISCOVER THE REGION of Oltrepo Pavese where the Bonarda grape does so well. I've
been there briefly years ago with Chef Geoff and David Bryant, Randy King and
Chris Pigott and we had the time of our lives in David's rented Fiat Hercules
minivan ...
MISSED OUR  appointment, were too late, and so they declined politely not to see
us. Too bad, their loss, we licked our wounds and survived somehow. After all,
we were in a beautiful party of Italy, ...

ERIC WILL TELL YOU TONIGHT ALL ABOUT this delightful CONTE VISTATRINO in the
cool bottle shape with a regal label, too ...

COME BE AMAZED BY " Durello " flavorful and dry, complex, multi-layered Metodo
Classico V.S.Q.P.R.D. sparkling Veneto from Sandro's own SANDRO DE BRUNO. Enrico
that will pour it for you all tonight brought Sandro himself to see us and taste
with us. For both Michel and me this was a highlight of the tasting, and we also
carry Sandro's non-sparkling Brut  Durello white ( $$22.99, 12.8% alcohol by
volume ' Monti Lessini ' DOC Durello Superiore, 13% alcohol by volume, go to :
www.sandrodebruno.it for more info ...  AS WELL AS  the ' Nero Fumo ' Pinot Nero
IGT Veneto dry red, $26.99, 2009, 13.5% alcohol by volume : BOTH here in stock
now.

ENRICO is from Veneto, Italy where this is from and knows and has spent time
with Sandro and so this will be great becasue he can tell you whatever you might
want to know, especially if you are visiting the Veneto region and might want to
visit Sandro.

SANDRO IS TRYING in his way ( as we are here ) to keep many of the indigenous
grape varieties alive and that is hard, fun, stimulating and a challenge that we
are all up to as we hear requests so often for the most popular styles that
would be Prosecco, very few people have ever heard of the Durello grape. Let's
change that tonight. Cheers.

REGIS WILL TASTE a  vino spumante Extra Dry  from SETTE Ventiquattro that we
love because it is light and dry and refreshing and inexpensive for indoors or
outdoors activities, even in the heat of the day and the bright sunshine this
SETTE vino spumante is a true delight, and so very affordable, too. I expect we
will sell lots of it tonight and have to reorder. It will become a ' regular '
for these hot days of ours.

PLEASE TASTE with Regis tonight and be sure and let us know what you think, I
believe we have a winner here on our hands.

REGIS WILL ALSO TASTE tow of the semi-sparkling wines that are not from Italy :
1) Txakoli from Zarautz, a 2012 from MOKOROA that is clean and crisp and really,
really fresh and dry! ...  2)  FLORIS Moscato 2011 from Oregon that is so lovely
in it's delicate, ethereal sweetness-without-heaviness! Wow, I love it, really I
do. Great summer-spring-hot-weather-sipping all by itself ...

COME BE CHEERED ON BY the white Lambrusco from PALTRINIERI, Emilia , Italy that
Robert will pour for you all once again. We just discovered it and poured if for
Mother's Day already and so will pour it once again tonight as it is rare, fun
and unique. You will also try the red version, as well as the dry rose version '
Leclisse ' Lambrusco. DISCOVER - uncover the world that is Lambrusco that we all
do not know yet!

ROBERT WILL ALSO POUR from magnums tonight some 1) Lombardy 100% 2008 Lugana dry
white, ...  2) some  50% Luganan and 50% Chardonnay dry white, and some ... 3)
100% Chardonnay 2008 dry white - ALL 3 sparkling of course - ALL from the same
producer, ALL only available in magnums for special events and parties. ALL
really limited in availability, buy tonight or risk not seeing them again for a
very long time!

TASTE FOR THE VERY 1st TIME with Didier tonight the amazing wines of IL
MONTICINO : 2 to try : one sparkling 2012 , one not, a 2011 : made from the
Pignoletto indiginous grape variety and wonderful. I got to try both recently
with Didier and the owner and I was blown away. There is also a dry Barbera red
but I guess that it is out-of-stock as we were going to pour some here tonight?
Pas disponible Didier?!?

THE AMAZING THING was that last night on Memorial Day itself my daughter, wife
and I polished off the half-bottle that was left from the tasting with the owner
and with Didier a week ago. It's been sitting in our refrigerator waiting for
it's moment. It did not fail : still many bubbles, still fresh and full and rich
and vibrant and lively - a true delight! I was so pleased, everyone enjoyed it
so I did not say a word. That's a testament to the fine quality. Wow!

SO : COME JOIN US tonight and really enjoy, relax and learn something , too
about the wealth that is Italy in liquid sparkling form : a revelation, one that
we will all share here together tonight!

TONIGHT @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits : 3423 Connecticut Avenue N.W. Washington D.C., 20008, Tel : 202-363-4265. Caio, a presto, gazie ...   TONY

To Be A Small Part Of Memorial Day Weekend, FRiday May 23rd, 2014 and Saturday May 254th, 2014 Here in Washington D.C. and Virginia ... How Special, Thanks To All You Vets! We All Thanks You!!

The thunder of motorcycles did roar, did escort me to and from work  yesterday : I followed a couple to work yesterday morning and crossed the Teddy Roosevelt bridge from Virginia to Washington D.C. and loved the sight crossing over the Potomac River with the sights all before me, the small American flag fluttering rapidly in the wind on the back seat of the motorcycle, the lady's blond hair blowing everywhere, too, the picture was perfect and I felt connected in a big way just then with that veteran in front of me with the gentle thunder of his Harley growling, letting everyone know it was very much there, alive and still able ... and I felt proud, I felt good, I felt connected as I said and as if it was an honor to be escorted like this, if only in my mind, into Washington to start Memorial Day weekend on a breezy, glorious May 23rd, 2014 morn ...    and then again later, at night, many vets escorted me home, all different , all roaring to some extent or another, all thundering to some level or another, in the dark , the lights, the flags ruffling and fluttering, all ages, some alone, some couples ... so many silent, untold stories wrapped up in each of them, so many experiences ... making me happy to see them here, to be gathered together like this, inspiring, really special, I felt to honored and special, glad to have been a slight part of all of this , happy to tell about it, to speak something for them, to recognize them, to say THANKS to them, for what they did for all of us, keeping us safe ,,, merci, gracias, grazie, obregado, ....   TONY 5/24/2014   on a glorious baby-blue skied morn with a breeze now and bright sunshine everywhere on Saturday ... come celebrate here with us, we have some great Spanish Cava open now from Fernando and Estebe of Tradewinds Specialty Imports for you all to taste, and just sold a bottle of the MAWBY Michigan sparkling wine to a young lady that had been on a run and thrilled to see it here! Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

TIME TO MOVE ALONG, I'm not pessimistic, I'm an optimist. I always try and see
the bright side of every situation and Cleveland Park is still very much a place
to be and quite the vibrant neighborhood. Simple as that, enough said. We just
need to make th rents paid here more reasonable and more businesses can afford
to be and to stay here and not move to other more affordable neighborhoods.

GREECE IS IN THE AIR, and it's beautiful here today as you can all see. Last
night we did a really fun and successful evening of fine Greek food and wine at
Mourayo restaurant down by Dupont Circle. I was thrilled to be there with Nassos
, Iason and Sotiris Bafitis and to finally know what our customer Joan has been
talking about to me for years now.

I GOT TO SIT WITH both Laura and with Raymond last night at this excellent
dinner. What a treat that was. Laura said when I was introduced : " I know you
Tony and have shopped at your store many times before." When Raymond sat down he
siad : " I want to ask you some questions. " One was about how business was
going? Raymond also said : " You're the one that writes the store emails that we
get still and read where you talk about the neighborhood and driving to work? "
I smiled and said : " Yes, I like to talk about those things as they are all a
part of the beer, food , liquor and wine experiences that we enjoy. " We had a
really nice conversation that unfolded slowly and cheerily. Thanks Laura and
Raymond, I look forward to seeing you soon when you pick up your orders from
last night's dinner.

AS I GOT UP TO MEET the various people at Mourayo's dinner last night I got to
the table with four gentlemen and they asked me how I was? I said I was a bit
sad that one of the people that I knew and that worked at Mourayo was not there
last night. They told me that they had been dining at Mourayo now for years.
When they heard what I had just said they said immediately : " Who?!? " I
responded : " her name is Joan. " Chip and Jaime immediately said : " We know
Joan! " They both said that she had waited on them many times and they wrote a
short note for me to give Joan : " Hi, Joan! Chip & Jaime say hello! " Nice, I
like that, I will give this to Joan when I see her next.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that any of you looking for good Greek food and wine served
in a nice setting with excellent service go by and dine there. Say that I
recommended the restaurant and ask to speak to Nassos that works there and will
take really good care of you while you are there.

LARRY Another Diner last night at Mourayo asked me from Greece's version of
grappa? I said that I did not know it and that I did not believe we had sold it
yet? Sotiris told me that Dionysos imports should have some for us to buy so I
will talk to our sales rep Danielle about it when she returns my call today.
Larry wants some, probably some of our other customers would want some if they
saw it on our shelves? I think so, that's usually how that works. More on that
once I hear anything.

SO : We have Memorial Day weekend upon us as well as Father's Day coming up on
June 15th! Lots to be aware of, and lots to plan for. What do you all have in
mind? Busy and exciting times. We have lots of everything for this weekend's
barbecues, grills, outdoor events here and at any lake or at the beach? We are

Mourayo! What a wonderful treat, what a smooth dry red to enjoy with or without
a meal. We had it last night with a lamb stew with Orzo and it flattered so well

MEMORIAL DAY Just Around the Corner : Victoria Day ( Canada ) Just Passed :
lots to celebrate, anticipate, look forward to. Let's do some of it together as
we have the " liquid cheer " in spades to add. With the whole world exploding
with " new " ideas of how to change things up and celebrate and experiment :
well, it's an amazing time for us all and as I said last week it's hard to keep
up anymore as everything gets broadcast now pretty much as it is happening.

DO ANY OF YOU STILL REMEMBER the days when you had to wait for the mail to come
with the news, the boat to arrive within a week or two, the truck crossing the
country to take between a week or two, depending? I , for one used to like
those lag times to catch my breath. Today is is almost impossible to catch
one's breath. I catch mine in my car to and from work and home. As much as I
hate driving those are my " five minutes of peace " so to speak. Did any of you
read the story of Mrs Large the hippopotamus to your children when they were
growing up and all she wanted was " five minutes of peace"?!? I loved that
story, so did my wife. We may have loved it more than our children did because
we sure could relate to Mrs Large.

POOLS WILL OPEN and hopefully the sun will shine on Memorial Day Weekend for us
all and we have some wonderful wines to share with you, right off the bat like
the excellent dry white, slightly-sparkling , low alcohol ( 9% alcohol by
volume ) Portuguese Vinho Verde :

1) SANTOLA Vinho Verde from VINHOS MESSIAS ( $7.99, from Mealhada,
Portugal ) is a prefect hot-weather wine to enjoy this weekend and we will
order extra to be sure we do not run out. It is light and fresh enough, the "
bit " of sparkle is nice, too as that serves to refresh as well as add an
element of celebration to any event.

ALSO :

2) Spanish Tempranillo , the DOMAINE DE ADIRA from the Bodega DONA FELISA
( the famous grape variety from Spain , $9.99 for the 750ml, $14.99 for the
1.5ml bottle size )  is another perfect dry, smooth, silky red wine to enjoy
for Memorial Day Weekend! It may be chilled slightly and served with or without
a meal, inside or outside. It does not matter. It may also be served with food
or without. It will complement pretty much everything. It's so versatile and
that's what I love almost as much as the silky, lovely-textured taste and
mouth-feel. This is a pretty amazing Spanish red for the money and we are
delighted to offer it to you. There is no bite or burn, it's easy and will make
a GREAT SANGRIA, too. You simply must check this lovely Tempranillo out and see
what you all think.

3) 100% Dry French Loire Valley Chenin Blanc from the LE HAUT VIGNOT ,
2010 ( $9.99, appelation Anjou controlee, 11% alcohol by volume, for more info
go to : www.LVDH.com ) that Sam Gessner tasted with you all this past Saturday
would make a great , refreshing and flavorful dry white when you grill or eat
outside. It's got charm and flavor and good mineral overtones to keep everyone
skipping right along to the tune of it's special Chenin Blanc taste.

4) 100% Torrontes indigenous dry white, 2010 from CARELLI 34 Latitude from
south of the Tunuyan river in Mendoza, Argentina ( On Special for $9.99, 13%
alcohol by volume, for more info go to : www.bodegacarelli.com.ar ). White wine
that " presents a pale yellow colour with steely tones. It has a perfumed aroma
which highlights the expression of the varietal Torrontes ". I agree with this
and so am happy to include it. The Torrontes grape originally came from Spain
but this Torrontes has been cloned enough that it has an " extra special
something " in it's bouquet and flavors that is just that much more special,
out there and engaging. You need to try some : it will be great to drink into
the weekend nights as the sun's warmth leaves us but we still wish to be
outside relaxing and enjoying family and friends.

5) Garnacha ( same as Grenache, $13.99, 14% alcohol by volume, ) called ZA
ZA, this 2011 Spanish dry rose from the Campo de Borja region is both a perfect
party wine as well as one to complement a meal. Really dry with a distinct
strawberry and floral bouquet, and on the palate it's simply mouth-watering
with brilliant juicy fruit accents in the extroverted flavors that jump right
out of the wine glass and dance on your tongue. It's way worth the extra money.

SOMETHING EXTRA SPECIAL :

6)  White Port from the Portuguese house BORGES ( never bought or
represented by the British like WARRES, TAYLOR-FLADGATE, FONSECA, and more ),
this white port ( $11.99, 19% alcohol by volume ) will be great this weekend
when you add some tonic or soda water to it and squeeze some fresh or lemon or
lime into it these weekend afternoons. When the sun leaves us in the evening
chill and serve it without adding anything. Both ways it is an absolute delight
and will please many of you.

7) Cabernet Sauvignon " Cherokee Lane " , 201 from California's Lodi
region and made by TORTOISE CREEK WINES ( $13.99, 13.9% alcohol by volume , for
more information go to : www.tortoisecreekwines.com ). This past Friday
Christina our local rep for Winesellers, Inc tasted it out with our customers
and it was a big hit for those of you looking for some " classically great "
California Cabernet Sauvignon that never loses track of the Cabernet fruit and
still has plenty of spice and flavor and character! It's a beautifully-balanced
wine and I liked it quite a bit and am thrilled to have it here in the store.
It's a great bottle when you grill or barbecue something.
ALSO :  " The Lodi Rules are California's first 3rd party certified
sustainable wine growing standards, designed to lead to measurable improvements
in environmental health of the surrounding ecosystem, society-at-large, and
wine quality ". WOW, LOVE this. Let's always do ALL THAT WE CAN for our
environment, our wines, our society. Bravo and cheers to the Lodi region of
California.

8)  Bonarda 201 from Argentina's Mendoza region from ZUCCARDI ( $15.99,
14% alcohol by volume, ) this SERIE A is made in the Italian way from where it
originally comes. Argentina has always had a lot of this Italian grape variety
the Bonarda planted and here it is earthy, pithy, a touch rustic and very
flavorful with lots of " highs and lows " and some really distinct flavors that
spread wide and cry for a meal like the one we will all enjoy this Memorial Day
weekend. It's great when you grill, marinate and also barbecue. It's a
wonderful medium-bodied food wine at 14% alcohol by volume. The wine is tasty
and balanced and has a really nice finish, too.

BUT HEY, Let's Not Forget Our Beer & Liquor :

BEERS, CIDERS  From SANTOS :

1) Verloren  " Gose " From SAMUEL ADAMS is Ale brewed with Coriander and
Salt ( On Special for $5.99, 6% alcohol by volume, 1 Pt. , 6 Fl. Oz., Batch #1

an unfiltered wheat ale ... flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of
salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice ". NEW!

2) Aloha Series from WAILUA, a Wheat Ale brewed with Passion Fruit from
the KONA Brewing Company ( $8.99 On Special for a 12-ounce 6-pack of bottles,

Reconnecting With The CANOE RIDGE Washington State Winery Once Again & Meeting Bill Murray For The Very First Time On Tuesday, May 13th, 2014 @ Cleveland Park's In-Store Evening Wine-Tasting From 5-7PM : What Fun!

Great to reconnect with the CANOE RIDGE wines of Washington State and to make some ' new ' friends and ' new ' connections as we did. Notice how Matt holding his child in his hands in the center picture is wearing a Bill Murray t-shirt, that's what Rosie O'Donnell in " Sleepless In Seattle " called ' a sign. ' What a coincidence, what a trip that was. His child was covering the t-shirt and so he had to take him out of his child seat to show us all. SO much fun! Loved it! The wines were really good. The Cherry Street soft and floral red blend was really delicious and fruit-forward : lovely! The Cabernet Sauvignon was more peppery and spicy and in need of some food. THe Pinot Gris dry white was so pleasing and floral and fresh, the Chardonnay was more weighty and really nice, too. By the way, we all found out from Bill Murray that since his involvement with the winery starting three years ago the production went from twelve thousand to ninety thousand! Shows what someone can do for a winery with help from everyone involved, of course. Cheers, Happy Tuesday, thanks Bill, great to finally meet you. Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 5/13/2014

BREAKING Tragic NEWS : Olivier Lotterie of the Vineyard Brands was just here
with owner Tyrrel Myburgh ( cellarmaster ) tasting the current releases of the
M.A.N. South African wines that we will sell again from $10-$15 a bottle :
Pinotage, Syrah-Grenache, Chardonnay and Pinotage ... impressive all, and
Olivier says to me : " I have some tragic news for you Tony : " One of our most
beloved winemakers passed away from a heart attack. " I turn to look a t him and
await what follows : " Laurence Faller. " NO! " I scream. " That cannot be!?!
How?!? " And Olivier continues : " I know you knew her personally. " Danny Haas
would bring her here and one of my fondest memories of Laurence besides her
tasting here in the store with us and with our customers is her taking me to
lunch with Danny Haas over to the INDIQUE restaurant.

Olivier continued : " Danny is devastated. The whole region of Alsace is
devastated. " We are devastated, how sad! Laurence has been here at least three
times that I remember, tasting us, tasting you all, signing bottles, doing all
that she can for her wines, for the wines of Alsace, for France : a classy lady,
a real inspiration, married with two children that survive her, only forty-five
years old : TRAGIC.

The other night with my wife , Maeco, Katherine, Denise and Sandrine we drank
some of Laurence's " Cuvee Laurence " Pinot Gris with a delicious steak meal
that Marco from Rome grilled for us, with a great green tossed salad with buts
and ' special veined and colorfully-explosive deep-rich lavender and red snaking
through the crinkled greens ... a tasty vinaigrette and some brown rice was it

... RIDGE Zinfandel 1985 that I already mentioned here,

 and Laurence's
SATURATION of delightful viscous, thick and lulling and wafting and floating
fresh and bright allusion and homage complete to nuts and honey and creams and
dense-deep citrus and vanilla and varied, variegated, voluptuous
flavors-savors-delighting one and all senses, seriously entertaining, pleasing,
teasing, testing, turning and stopping us and our palates with each sip, big or
small ... the flavors were those to truly savor and not labor, just delight, not
fight, just be swept-up, just be harmonized, humored and everything but hammered
as they made their entrance, found their space and placed - all these lasting
Pinot Gris golden-rich-colored tastes of the " Cuvee Laurence '!

I always had to buy more of the " Cuvee Laurence " in homage, in appreciation of
her, her beauty, the intensity of her eyes, the way she would with them grab
yours and hold your eyes for a lifetime before releasing them.

The way her hair that was drawn back tightly to mold her youthful and edged
features. She was so beautiful, so simple in her stylishness, little
embellishments of this or that that spoke volumes always. It was always a treat
to be in her presence and to taste with her.

She was always very attuned and very attentive to all that was going on around
her. One one of her visits she was here when Aurelio Cabestrero came and visited
with one of his Spanish owners/producers. I have pictures of all of that and
need to share them now more than ever before.

We have some of Laurence's wines here today like the Muscat Reserve 2009 " Clos
des Capucins " , On Special for $36.99, 13% alcohol by volume, and I will have
to open a bottle today and celebrate her life as well as that of everyone at
DOMAINE WEIBACH from Kaysersberg , and from family members : Colette, Catherine
et Laurence ... as well as the ' new ' generation there that I do not know yet.

Laurence you are loved, will be missed, you are so special!

The last visit from Danny Haas when he came a month or so bearing his
twenty-or-so wines included a bottle of the DOMAINE WEINBACH and after tasting
it and sharing it - actually it included two bottles , a Grand Cru and another -
Danny knowing how much I liked Laurence, left both bottles, one of which I took
home as Joe took home the Grand Cru. Thanks you Danny, we feel your pain. We are
all pained.

I toast now here to you Laurence. Merci pour tous, c'est bien trop tot que tu
viens de nous quitter, nous sommes tous bien tristes! Ce n'est pas juste ca,
vraiment pas juste. I die myself a little with this sad news Laurence.

HEY, Jimmy's getting married today! Just sold some real French dry rose CHARLES
De CAZANOVE Tradition Pere Et Fils a Reims ,  champagne , $22.99 to go along
with the occasion, and since it was all so rushed I loaned them two Reidel
champagne flutes to use as they are on the run, the two of them, too busy , too
impatient after waiting all these years! What a treat to be a part of all of
this as Jimmy has been coming here weekly now for years tasting sometimes and
always picking up what was needed , that, on special occasions always included a
bottle of dry Jurancon white as that was part of a childhood memory so many
wonderful years ago. Congratulations to you both, you both are wonderful people
and it has been a pleasure and an honor to sell to you over the many years here.
Cheers, I raise a glass and toast you both.
