Anthony Quinn's Tuesday Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Store Email Today, September 23rd, 2013 : Read It & Enjoy It : Cheers!

leveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
SCRAMBLING - OH WHAT FUN! So much to share with you all. This beautiful weather is contagious and puts a broad smile on my face. We have some special treats for you all here that I will mention from Michel Dumas, Ravinder Sharma, Santos Rivera and me - Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn.

I WANT TO " Shout Out " for Ravi that works our register, buys the spirits and sells you all so many winning lottery tickets, too. Ravi is retiring and going to India to spend a month, maybe more. He's here until October 15th, 2013 : so if you have not yet said your " bye byes ", this is the time.

RAVI MAY BE BACK TO WORK, he may not : that remains to be seen. It's all up to him. We love having him here and will sorely miss him, all that he has done, all that he has meant to us and the many of you that have gotten to know and love his broad grin and beaming smile. He has added so much to the daily fabric of our lives. he has solved many problems, his level-headed approach to many situations has been a real saving grace that we will remember, grin at, and miss.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE 20 years?!? That's a mini lifetime, a mini-marriage, a real chunk of both time and change. Ravi : the stories you can tell, the things that you have seen pass through this long rectangular space. So much life, so many marriages, celebrations, birthdays, reunions, partings, returns, births and deaths. You could spend another twenty years writing all these stories down, emailing them, tweeting them, blogging and pod-casting them.

THINGS CHANGE and life and business and communities, neighborhoods all go on, keep changing and morphing, the characters and the players, the observers, the landscape, city-and-neighborhood-scapes all continue to adjust. We as humans try and adjust. It's hard when you figure into all of this things like the fact that we have one week to establish a budget and pass it for our government to continue functioning.

THE THINGS THAT SUSTAIN US , nourish us, provide us with comfort and order and a certain calm and joy - like Ravi - have stayed the same. He has been here weekly for all of you, for us : we have weathered together many a storm. We are grateful for Ravi's service to Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits as well as to our fabulous Cleveland Park neighborhood.

THANK YOU RAVI,gracias, merci, prego, obregado. You are always welcome here! What will we ever do without you?!?

SO : HAVING SAID ALL this about you Ravi I will start out with your spirits and talk about them first. Santos you will follow Ravi in today's store email.

MY WIFE asked me if I knew about this? I said I did and that we sold it. She forwarded an email onto me saying that there was a push to have it become even more popular here than vodka, that it sells really well all over the world.

MY RESPONSE was that I doubted it would do as well here, and that the people selling it to us had really dropped the ball as this is the only one we have.

WHERE are all the others?

WHY have we not seen them yet? Where's all the push and advertising here to boost sales?

WHY have we never been approached to do an in-store soju tasting? Many unanswered questions. Only time will tell. Come check this out!

Unbelievably smooth , bright and refreshing and MOST OF ALL : elevating!

WE ALSO ARE RECEIVING Italian Wines :

FROM THE NEIL EMPSON PORTFOLIO -
TWO Whites -
1) BUCCI 2008 Verdicchio CI Dei Castelli di Jesi DOC half-bottles ( 375ml
size , easy to take on picnics and to concerts or on hikes ) : On Special for
$13.99. It does not get more complex or more laden with mineral " jewels " and
essences of citrus and " grounding " earth and land and roots that stretch to
the opposite ends of the earth. Now that's a stretch : that's one big reach!
It's in the taste : just like a great bottle of red : there are volumes of
stories here, layers upon layers of flavors that become decipherable with
attention and patience and practice.
2) FARNESE Pecorino Casale Vecchio 2008 On Special for $13.99. I need to
try this again. It's been six months since I last had it so I will open a
bottle here in the store tomorrow during the sale.

Six Dry Reds -

1) MATANE Primitivo 2007 On Special for $13.99. The California Zinfandel
in the DNA tests matches up the most closely to the Primitivo grape. Pretty
heady and intoxicating dry red. Feel the earth and the grapes from the vines
that together with the roots connect the soil with the air and all the elements
and gather them together into one series/flights of tastes on the one's palate
when one is patient and not in a rush! Cheers.
2) PODERI COLLA Pinot Noir ( Pinot Nero ) " Campo Romano " DOC  On Special
for $27.99. This is from the Piemonte region of Italy that is responsible for
the great barolos and Barbarescos of the world. Here we have something more
velvety and elegant and certainly lighter, too for meals that require something
perhaps with more subtle, refined flavors?
3) PODERI COLLA Dolcetto d'Alba " Pian Balbo " 2008 On Special for $13.99.
Here we have a really famous, great everyday dry red from the Piemonte that
delivers the ol-world/traditional style of wine-making that is pretty
enthralling and mermerising especially when combined in these cooler days and
nights with some good comfort foods. Cheers.
4) POSERI COLLA Nebbiolo D'Alba magnums ( 1.5ml bottle size which is
double the normal 750ml bottle ) 2007 On Special for the very reasonable price
of ONLY $39.99 a bottle! This is the grape that makes the Barolo and the
Barbaresco wines that are so famous. In a magnum size like this the wine ages
ever so more gracefully and is slower to reveal all of it's layers and layers
of hidden charms. This is a FABULOUS DEAL to buy and give or to keep and to
wait for that special/right time to enjoy it when the stars and everything else
are aligned just so!      5) TERRABIANCA Merlot " Il Tesoro " 2005, On Special
for $33.99, this is from a great producer as well, this time in Tuscany.
Between PODERI COLLA and TERRABIANCA we have sold hundreds of cases over the
past ten years. We have had the owner of PODERI COLLA and the international
sales manager of TERRABIANCA here at least two-three times over these past ten
years as well. They are family, they are genuine, they make top-flight/

There's always a fun story to share : Layla is off for California to start her new job. She just came back from the Basque country and from Spain where she was surfing. She had a cold and was packing and was in great spirits and eager to know more about her new home. While tasting with everyone else our wines from FRance, Sicily, Napa Valley and Washington State our customers shared some of their stories and recommendations with her for when she is there. Nice. It was a great visit and she met Veronica , too and they shared their information before leaving with their wines for the weekend! Cheers, ... Happy Sunday everyone. It's clear as the torrential rains and clouds have passed on and the sun is starting to rise higher in our baby blue skies this morning. I'm loving it! TONY

Veronica passed by the wine-tasting table as I was tasting Layla on some Washington State and Napa Valley California wine. Layla really liked the 2010 Petite Sirah Napa Valley ELYSE Winery dry red, $37.99. It was the Big-Hit on the reds with her. remember, she had a cold and it broke through and she could taste it! Veronica, down from Connecticut visiting her aunt in northwest D.C. needed a gift for her. She decided on the VALLE DELL'ACATE " Cerasuela " D.O.C.G. dry red blend of 75% Nero D'Avola and 25% Frappatto 2009, $24.99 Classico to give her aunt. She quite liked it as well as the interesting story behind it, that it was from the southeastern region of Sicily, and that by law that it had to be this blend, and that it was a traditional style, flavorful, an maturer dry red wine to leave as her " thank you " to her aunt for letting her spend the night before heading on to continue her journey, going south I believe veronica? Cheers. Thanks for stopping by. Good to chat yesterday before the skies poured forth with all their pent-up waters!.   TONY

Victoria says of the ELYSE Winery 2010 Petite Sirah from Napa Valley, $37.99 a bottle, that : " It's a really nice one. Tastes like blackberries . " She then said : " Don't you smell it? " I did. I thanked her for sharing that with Regis, me and the others tasting at the time. It's always a treat to hear what you all think of these wines, and for sharing it with others, too. Take care, happy Sunday morning September 22nd, 2013!    TONY

Tasting Yesterday, Friday , September 19th, 2013 With Elisa Scavino of Her Family PAOLO SCAVINO Wines & Later With Andrea Pace Of CERETTO - Both Fine Piemontese People & Wines - Great Barolo & Barbaresco Wines! Lovely!!

I forgot to mention that at Winebow's portfolio tasting of French, Italian and Greek wines that I saw again Andrea Pace of CERETTO, and he poure me a glass of the incredible 2008 " Propo " Barolo that we would sell for $119.99 a bottle. Pretty special, just like the PAOLO SCAVINO that we tried with Elisa Scavino yesterday and have already ordered. We will try and also make room for this exciting 2008 " Propo " as it was quite magical and lyrical as well, not quite as intense or deep-welled as the 2006 Scavino Barolo! Both have their rightful places : BITH are excellent! Cheers, grazie a Elisa e Andrea! e a presto ...   Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn    I enjoyed lunch outside today in the full sun and breeze and baby blue skies that were sparkled with tiny white puffs we call clouds ... nice, a glass of wither the PAOLO SCAVINO 2006 or the CERETTO 2008 Barolo would have been a real PLUS! Come and check out what we have here for everyday drinking like the Dolcetto D'Alba 2011, $21.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume ; and the PAOLO SCAVINO Vino Rosso  L 2012 B, $16.99, 13% alcohol by volume. YESTERDAY @ Ripple Restaurant Winebow Imports hosted a great wine-tasting and I met :

1) Angela Maculan of her family's Veneto winery called MACULAN. We have the excellent PINO & TOI dry white blend of Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Tocai that's flavorful and dry and only $10.99. LOVED her 2 reds : 1) Brentino IGT Merlot 2011, and the Cabernet Sauvignon  Palazzotto DOC 2010 - so elegant, airy, fruit-forward, fresh, BRIGHT and lively : gravity-defying BOTH!

 I ALSO MET :

 2) Clara Gentili ( pubbliche relazioni ) ofFATTORIA LE PUPILLE that in Tuscany, in Maremma and also in Morellino di Scansano makes fine reds - I tasted three, I LOVED the basic, less-expensive one. Will have to order some ASAP!

    ALSO I MET :

3) Guido Orzalesi from ALTESINO in Tuscany and tried four FABulous reds, I loved the 3rd that came in a burgundy-style bottle that really impressed me to " no-end " - was it the 100% Sangiovetto Grosso 2008 DOCG Brunello? I'm calling for clarification now?

ALSO MET :

4) Filippo Zardetto of ZARDETTO SPUMANTI SRL that makes five spumanti sparkling Veneto wines from Valdobbiadene and around the region. I LOVED the Organic 100% Glera Brut NV, the Tre Venti-Three Winds Single Vineyard Brut NV 100% Glera, and the Rose NV 100% Rabosso. Wonderful!

Cleveland Park WineCleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
GREAT CHANCE TO COME TOGETHER here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits as the cool weather and rain of today are the perfect foil for us all to get together here ...

THAT'S FROM a store email I wrote and posted 2 years ago on September 20th, 2011. Seems like a lifetime ago. How things have changed. I posted this email on our Facebook page for you all to read and to see how things have evolved since then : always good to have some perspective on our lives.

I WANT TO GIVE A GREAT BIG " Shout-Out / Let's Make Some Noise " For Our LOCAL LEGEND in the spirits business here in Washington D.C. : to LINDA FERGUSON that worked at Forman Brothers distributors that became National, that later became National-Republic where she is now and retires at the end of this month. Everyone that has ever done any spirits business with these three distributors over the years knows that Linda Ferguson has been like the mother, the savior, THE ONE that made many things happen, many deals complete, many orders ship and arrive in one piece and as intended  - on so many instances that no one can count them. I know this first-hand because I worked at Forman Brothers back in 1995-1997 and she was the glue of the operation, the face of the company, the kind and gentle and professional person in the link that never lost her temper, never despaired, worked and worked until it happened if at all humanely possible.

I THANK YOU LINDA for all of us. We will miss you, you will be sorely missed. Come by sometime with your lovely daughter and say : hello ". You are always welcome. You helped us all a lot here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits over the years. Thanks! You are a rare gift to us all, you are a wonderful person.

I WAS DEVASTATED YESTERDAY with the news that my wife brought home to me about the senseless killing and loss of lives at the Naval Yard here right in our backyard. That was then compounded by watching the early evening news with the flooding in Colorado. Later I saw footage in Mexico, too. As my friend said to me : " I'm overwhelmed. " Me, too. I was touched to see a woman helping in Colorado in one of the neighborhood's of Denver where people could still drive to helping out.

SHE SAID THAT she had been surprised by all the help that was given her during Hurricane Sandy on the Jersey shore, and this was her way to try and pay back that generosity shown her. The comments that I heard in that footage from those there in Denver was that they could not believe others would help as they did. So positive, so assuring.

I HEARD ALL THIS LATE YESTERDAY as I had been out trimming and cutting away all the exuberant and lively growth from plants and shrubs, bushes, flowers and trees : from all the lush and tangled masses of butterfly bush, green shrubs with no name that I know, to holly bushes and trees, ornamental and invasive grasses, Crepe Myrtle bushes, and more. Oh, the Virginia creeper and the other not-so-desirable creepers were thick in the butterfly bushes and the overgrown azaleas!

THERE, IN THE THICK of these bushes and vines I felt like I was in Brazil's Amazon with a machete hacking away at everything to find the light and blaze a trail! I did enjoy this and have all my scratches and bruises to show as badges of this valiant effort that I have undertaken this year, It's all paying off slowly. Glad to be in the thick of things like this.

AS I TOLD MY WIFE over the dinner I grilled outside for us I knew that working hard like this in our yard grounded me and kept me younger : and certainly attached and involved with life : may I say : real life?!?

I ALSO FELT very much in the thick of things here in Cleveland Park as many of us met at the Cleveland Park Library on Thursday night to discuss the four proposals of what to do , or keep the same, about our strip out front of parking spaces on our access road. Tempers, emotions, voices and facial expressions were all intense and flared and it was an intense meeting with strong opinions from everyone for about two-and-a-half hour period. Everyone has an opinion, many expressed parts of them, it was quite emotional.

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK about the space that is a block-long here in front of our stores : our access road : should it stay the same or be changed? I did see a number of our customers there. People did show up for this meeting, people do care. I was pleased to have been there for this.

I WANT TO WELCOME Anna and Adam from Australia to our neighborhood. They were here this weekend shopping with two of their Aussie friends. Anna is pregnant she and I spoke quite a bit about the current wine market here for Aussie wines. It was nice for me to meet them and to have a chance to hear what they say? They are concerned as sales have been sluggish from what they hear because of YELLOW TAIL they believe? I said I thought it was more because of big companies like FOSTERS that had made the change, especially considering the strong Aussie dollar and the weak American dollar?

ANYWAY, we are delighted to be keeping the wines of Australia alive-and-well here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits. We just added some and that feels so good. Come by and buy some Aussie wines the next time you need a bottle. I spoke of WEST CAPE HOWE ( go to :www.westcapehowewines.com.au  for more infor mation ), VINACEOUS, HAY SHED HILL, LONGVIEW, HUGH HAMILTON, DOMAINE TERLATO & CHAPOUTIER, and more : ALL alive and selling here!

WINES From Michel & Tony :

          WHITES:

2 Exciting Pinot Grigio Wines :

     1) Pinot Grigio delle Venezie , 2012 from ZENATO , $11.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, the current wines have that " bit extra pizzas " and acidity to energize-polarize them and make them very bright and very refreshing!

     2) Pinot Grigio Unoaked 2012 from di LENARDO Vineyards , established 1878, Friuli, Italy ( $13.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, Gonars, Italy ; go to : www.dilenardo.it for more information ) : there's a fullness, a passion , a pleasure, an instant-contact with your palate when this Pinot Grigio of owner Max touches it : unmistakable, so immediate, so overall pleasurable! Bravo Max!

          OTHER WHITES :

     1) Chardonnay - 234 , a 2012 Somontano from ENATE ( $15.99, 14% alcohol by volume, from Vinedos y Crianzas A.A.S.A., Salas Bajas, Spain, 100% Chardonnay ) : this flavor, balance, taste profile really impressed both Michel and myself. We are very pleased to have this current vintage of 2012 here once again. Cheers.
     2) Viognier 2012 from CHARMUYO Estate in La Rioja, Argentina ( On Special for $9.99 a bottle - regularly $13.99 a bottle, ) : Fernando Valenti that poured this for you all this past Saturday ... it was a big success for those planning a meal that's flavorful and needs a dry white to stand up to bold flavors.

THERE'S A DISTINCT beginning taste here that's bold of sun-drenched nuts and a splash of vanilla, and then a touch of toast and a touch of tartness-even an accent of bitterness that will cut many flavors. It's bold, for an equally bold meal - something grilled, some eggplant, some Portobello mushrooms even before turning to the reds that they make, like the Reserva Tannat that we sell here for $19.99?

ONE OF OUR GOOD customers Andrea said of the Tannat Reserva from CHANARMUYO Estate that it would be great, as she's a vegetarian , with grilled tofu, grilled eggplant and grilled mushrooms like Portobello! Buy a bottle of each and start cooking and testing the two wines with these various flavors.

     3) 2011 Riesling VQA Niagara Penninsula from CAVE SPRING CELLARS ( $16.99 a bottle, 11.5% alcohol by volume, Jordan, Ontario, Canada : go to : www.cavesspring.ca for more info ) : this past Friday when John Morrison poured it for everyone the comment was always something like :
" Wow,  and ... I don't usually like Riesling, but I like this . "

WE SOLD MOST of it as it is showing so well : has some fruit but not too much for most.
SOME DID NOT WANT any of the Riesling fruit, others wanted more of the Petrol-nose that the Riesling develops with more age : many found it perfect as it was! Thanks owner Tom, you make fine Rieslings, you and your Italian winemaker. Bravo.

     4) Sauvignon Blanc 2011 from YORKVILLE CELLARS. made with organic grapes ( $18.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, from Mendocino, CA. Go to : www.Yorkville Cellars.com for more info ) : Estate grown, from the Randle Hill Vineyard, this wine has a bit more weight and depth that you might expect. It's a really fine food wine as the dryness and the weight will make you start thinking about some food to accompany it.
JOHN MORRISON also poured this on Friday night and, again everyone loved it. We still have a few bottles here, some in the cold box. What a good wine this would be to start sipping outside before you move inside to your meal on this drop-dead gorgeous afternoon here now!

          ROSE :

     1) Petit Rose 2012 from Germany's WEINGUT FRIEDRICH BECKER in the Pfalz, dry, flavorful, $19.99, 11.5% alcohol by volume , from Schweigen , a qualitatswein ) : made from a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 20% Portuguiser, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Dornfelder.

" IT SHOWS NICE FRUIT, lingering freshness, good balance and a mouthwatering acidity which makes this a great wine to enjoy on it's own or with a wide variety of dishes. "

     2) Lagrein dry rose , made from the indigenous Lagrein grape variety, DOC, from KELLEREI CANTINA ANDRIAN, $18.99, 13% alcohol by volume ( from Italy's Alto Adige region in Terlano , go to :www.cantina-andriano.com for more info ) :

DARKER, DEEPER COLOR, this has a lot of weigh and flavor and again is best with a meal. Perfect in these evenings as it get cooler outside as the sun moves further away from us and eventually disappears from sight. The flavors here longer for a long time and stay with you until the sun returns, of course! Real flavor, real excitement here. Cheers.

          REDS :

     1) Monica , an indigenous dry red grape variety from Sardinia, from PALA, $18.99, 14% alcohol by volume, this 2011 really impressed Michel and myself. For more information on it go to :www.pala.it.

LOVED the toasty cherry, roasted berry flavors that are fruit-forward, medium-to-light-bodied, engaging and fun and make your palate follow along as not to miss anything! This is a really nice, special wine from Sardinia : a " new " taste sensation for you all, nice just to sip for awhile before the meal comes along. Great when you grill. Chill it slightly up to 30 minutes. PERFECT for today and this weather! FUN!

     2) Cannanau Di Sardegna is another name for the Grenache grape. This 2012 from BRUNO ZANATTA, $16.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, near Olbia, made from 100% Cannanau, it will remind you of a good southern French Rhone with it's own flavor twist and surprise. We loved it and ordered it immediately. It's a great food wine, and great now as things begin to cool down some. It will buttress and fortify you and your home, and you will be happy to be getting to know it and it's specific Sardinian character. Cheers!

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
GREAT CHANCE TO COME TOGETHER here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits as the
cool weather and rain of today are the perfect foil for us all to get together
here and outside the store and work together to accomplish many shared goals
and opportunities. Things seem to be heating up and I had plenty of opportunity
sitting in traffic not far from home this morning to organize many of my
thoughts. Take a gander in outline form :
1) TONIGHT : Giovanni Pasquero-Elia of PAITIN winery in Piemonte, Italy
here Tuesday, Sept. 20th, 2011 from 5-8PM with Regis of Roanoke Imports to
taste his red wines made from the Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes : that means some
Barbera D'Asti and some Barbaresco, too. No charge, join us. What great values
Giovanni's wines offer : classic and traditional and meant to be enjoyed fully
in the context of a meal with family and friends, and what values, too.
2) Weekend Tastings with Regis tasting the RANSOM gin products and Sotiris
tasting more Italian wines with maybe a surprise or two. Both here from 2-6PM.
3) A GAUCHEZCO wine dinner at Chef Geoff's on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011
for you all. I'm waiting on a menu and a price for the dinner and have just
called Mark Congdon my local rep for more info to put here for you at least to
all mark your calendars. UPDATE : Mark just returned my call and the evening
will have two Malbecs served as well as a dry white Torontes and a dry rose as
well. I will have to ask him what grapes are used to make the dry rose?
4) Spoke to owner Richard Gguyen of Nam Viet here about his friend Javier
Perez of the Team Pura Vida that will be running the 36th Annual Marine Corp
Marathon and I need more info to include here? Go to : Javier@teampuravida for
more info and I will add more as soon as I here from Richard.
5) Cleveland Park Day is on Saturday, October 1st, 2011 from 1-5PM and so
I called my local rep Vince Grande that represents both Italian producers of :
MARCHESI Di BAROLO ( in the Piemonte region of Italy ) and CANTINA Di
MONTALCINO in Tuscany ( among other selections, Too I am sure). Anyway, I have
called Vince and asked him to come up with a really SPECIAL wine-tasting for us
from 1-6PM to really make that period wonderful here in the store. Both Santos
and Ravi are also working on things to treat you all to from 1-6PM here at the
same time. Last year we had wine-owner and wine-maker Hugh Hamilton come of his
own winery in the McLaren Vale, of South Australia called HUGH HAMILTON.
6) Make plans already for our next Big-Theme Wine-Tasting : AUSTRALIA : on
Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM. This will be fun : we will
include many of our favorite Aussie wineries from LONGVIEW, WEST CAPE HOWE,
VINACEOUS, GIBSON and LOOSE END, HUGH HAMILTON, LOGAN, CULLEN, D'ARENBERG, SHOO
FLY, LEEUIN, PENLEY, INNOCENT BYSTANDER and more. Still working on this of
course. Just getting started and building gradually ...
7) Working with the Cleveland Park Business association of local stores
here to help promote our neighborhood and what we may/can offer you all? I am
signing up to work on the Marketing Committee as that is something that greatly
interests me and that I am good at.
8) I just heard last night that legendary wine-importer Joe Dressner
passed away. He was fighting brain cancer and we have sold selections of his
wines for years. He had been to the store I believe three times, the last time
with owner/wine-maker Eric Texier of TEXIER French Rhone wines before heading
down to their dinner at Lavandou here at the end of our block. Joe, you will be
missed! It's really a big loss for all of us. You have made a huge difference
to the wine world with your selections of wines made in Europe and that respect
both the place, the grapes and of course the land in which the vines and grapes
grow. Someone might not like the wine(s) that you have selected but no one can
dispute the quality : traditional, classic, always popular even today as they
will still be tomorrow and the next. Thanks for all that you have added. I will
order some of your wines for October and celebrate with them and sell them in
testament and in celebration of you and your wine selections. This will be a
fun event. Look forward to more info about all of this.
9) Introducing Ralph Gillotte to the Cleveland Park staff. Ralph's first
day was yesterday and that is a BIG DEAL and we are all thrilled here to have
Ralph on board especially to help me with the wines. Ralph used to be our sales
person from Vinifera Italian wines and he really knows them well. He knows
really great Italian wines, too as Vinifera imports only sells the very best:
period. SO, we will probably have even more emphasis in the future on our
Italian wine selection. I have as yet to learn what Ralph likes along with his
Italian wines? Ralph has had experience in both retail, restaurants and local
country clubs. He's just back from a 2-month trip to Hawaii where he worked two
jobs I believe, one being in a local wine shop there? We will get more
information in the next few days. SO : come by and welcome Ralph to our store.
We think you will like him : great smile.
10) We are very sad to say " bye " to Greg Siebert that worked really hard
here and really made his mark and contribution on our store. I know a number of
our customers really liked working with him. He got another job offer but would
not tell anyone what it was. We wish him well and Greg said in leaving that he
had really enjoyed his experience here and that he wanted to stay in touch and
receive this store email and return for some of our tastings. We will include
more info as we get it. If you are reading this Greg : thanks for everything -
you will be missed. Cheers and good luck.

SO YOU SEE MY DRIVE TO WORK can be fruitful and many ideas and memories come to
mind. I had to make my list here quickly once that I arrived. I probably missed
some things but that's okay. I will add them to my growing list.

WINE From Tony & Ralph :

SPARKLING -
1) Non-Vintage Brut/Dry Aussie sparkling wine ( $13.99 ) that reminds me a
whole lot of really nice Italian prosecco. Enjoy!
2) Prosecco of CANALLINO ( $14.99 ) is pretty impressive. Dry, elegant and
so luminously bright!
3) Prosecco of VIGNADORO ( $18.99 ) has got a silky finesse and breed and
refinement that it's pretty amazing and so very agreeable. Lovely!

REDS -

1) Syrah Estate grown and bottles 2007 ( great vintage ) from California's
Santa Ynez Valley and made by ZACA MESA was great over the weekend. I enjoyed a
bottle over Sunday and Monday and I must say that it was quite spectacular,
especially on Sunday night when it was freshest. I loved it, even with the
higher 14.5% alcohol level. It was a really great foil for the cool weather
outside as I grilled on both evenings and prepared dinner for my family. It
sells for $26.99 a bottle and is worth every penny. We still have some so come
and take advantage of this before it is all gone. It's so well-balanced and
smooth : melts and molds and caresses and seduces and cajoles - an overall
grande " please ".
2) Private Reserve 2008 Merlot from Chile's Aconcagua Valley from ALMA De
Chile ( $14.99 ) is a lovely dry red that's medium-bodied and so silky and
bright and the sun shines through the color and catches in it and radiates
warmth and comfort and ultimate joy that's there for the taking and involving
no effort at all. It's perfect for this weather when you get home and want a
dry, smooth, no-edge red to sip. Cheers.

BY THE WAY : Our Chilean Big-Theme Wine-Tasting here this past Wednesday,
Sept. 14th, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM was a huge success and we had more new faces
and customers and so much excitement and joy that it was palpable. You could
almost touch it. Many came from the Chilean Embassy to be a part of this
three-hour event where the wines showed beautifully and we sold many bottles
and cases of wine on this evening. We also raised money that we sent the next
morning to the Chilean Earthquake relief and you all helped us to do that.
Thanks. Feels good to help others where we can.
MANY OF THOSE WINES ( ALMA De CHILE, IN SITU, FALERNIA, AROMO, DOS PASOS
and VIU MANENT ) are all here from the tasting and can be purchased now if you
were not able to attend. We can tell you all about them. I tasted wines from
Chile from Wednesday through Saturday and we sold much more after the tasting.
It was a week of Chilean wines, of quality and of tremendous value, too. Thanks
Manuel Rojas for helping me to get the ball rolling and for inviting everyone
from the Chilean Embassy to be a part of this special moment.

WHITE -

1) Bordeaux blanc blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon Blanc, this 2010
CHATEAU LA MOULINIERE ( $13.99 ) has become a real favorite of you all. All you
have to do is have a couple of sips and you will understand immediately: what's
not to really like here?!?

Dry ROSE -

1) Shiraz dry rose from South Africa's Stellenbosch region and made by DE
MEYE ( $13.99 ) is very pleasing and rich and full on the palate. Again, hard
to not be drawn to it within the first three sips. Nice with or without a meal.
Beautiful apricot-salmon-strawberry colors that entice. This 2011 is as fresh
as it gets with 13.5% alcohol by volume.
