Just Reminded Of The GROTTA DEL SOLE Fine Wines Of Campagnia, Italy When I Saw Owners Name Gilda Guida That Is Now Friends With ... This Coda Del Volpe Indigenous Dry White Is Superb : Great For This 3-Day Labor Day Weekend Of Ours! Happy Grilling & Drinking Good Beer & Wine.

JUST SAW that owner Gilda Guida of the GROTTA Del SOLE winery in Quatro ( NA ) Italia  is now friends with ... she's always been our friend, ever since we first met, she and her husband : the very best, the salt of the earth! I have a bottle here of the CODA DI VOLPE , Campagnia dry indigenous white made from that same name, that means : " the fox's tail ". this dry, herbal, aromatic, mineral and nut and delicate honey-over-toned I.G.T., $14.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, is a medium-bodied-to-light white that's superb with a meal. It will cut through many a sauce, texture, various foods, ... it will make you hungry. Recommend you come and try this with your Labor Day grill. So here's a SHOUT-OUT to Gilda and her husband that I think is named Salvatore? I think I have that right? Salvatore went around the store here and photographed it in it's entirety! He liked what he saw, wanted to remember it. I liked that, still do even now. Cheers everyone : come and get some CODA DI VOLPE soon for this weekend.  Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 8/31/13

Tasting Today , Thursday August 29th, 2013 The COUER DE TERRE Vineyard 2012 Pinot Gris Willamette Valley, Oregon Eloquent Dry White That Lulled & Cheered & Floated Me So Nicely! Highly Recommended!

Tasting earlier some of the COEUR De TERRE Vineyard 2012 Pinot Gris, $21.99. 12% alcohol by volume, Oregon Willamette Valley dry white. Wow, I could not get over the lovely, viscous texture, so like and extra-virgin Tuscan olive oil-turned-white-wine that is rich and thick and piled and carpeted and textured, and rolls like the top of the fabulous ornamental grasses or the grains of the prairies, or the sand dune's sea oats of the Outer Banks, silent sentries that protect us. I loved it - from start-t0-finish a most satisfying complete wine! A grand treat, and well-priced, too. Come check it out. Perfect to sip with or without a meal! FRom McMinnville, Oregon, 97128. Highly-recommended. Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn   8/29/13   Go to : cdtvineyard.com for more information. What a fabulous magic white wine carpet ride : John Kay would have been proud!   Happy Thursday everyone, happy one of the last days of summer, too!!    TONY

Delighting Today in The Delectably Delicious Taste Of This Subtle " Forrest Ground Fresh Strawberry- Accented " BRICK HOUSE 2011 " Ribbon Ridge " Gamay Noir That's Biodynamic, Too From Newbery, Oregon! Cheers!!

Just sampled again the 2011 BRICK HOUSE " Ribbon Ridge " Biodynamic Gamay Noir dry red from Newberg, Oregon, $38.99, 13% alcohol by volume : what subtlety, like wild forrest vines, there's a lovely " forrest ground strawberry " quality to this that blows me away. Regis , our local rep earlier said : " Roasted chicken " would be nice. The That made me think of Frank Ruta's " Half Chicken " that he makes at Palena restaurant here a block away. I love this idea, I wonder if they serve it there. They should : this would be a " match made in Cleveland Park, Northwest Washington D.C., 20008" ! It's so elegant, fresh, bright and light : lighter than Pinot Noirs. They perfect dry red to enjoy now in the heat and the humidity of this Washington D.C. metropolitan area. LOVELY, highly recommended. COME quickly here, buy a bottle or tow and rock Labor Day! Make some silky, velvet NOISE for this BRICK HOUSE 2001 Gamay Noir, $38.99 a bottle. Cheers,   Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn  8/29/13

CLEVELAND PARK WINES & SPIRITS is the place to be with this heat and humidity. It's nice and cool here and you can come in and chill-down a bit and collect your thoughts and we will show you some of the CONSTANT, EVER-CHANGING, continuously-growing landscape of wines, beers, spirits, apple ciders, liqueurs, waters, sodas, and more. It's pretty amazing and it takes us by surprise and sometimes we are caught running up to catch up to whatever " new " and exciting!

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH WITH FAMILY to have my lunch this past Saturday at Pulpo. I did not have much time but the time that I did have was thoroughly enjoyable. My wife really enjoyed herself. The general manager Dave Hansen came to greet us. He has come from California recently to lend his special talents and skills to make PULPO be all that it can. As it now joins the other celebrated neighborhood " success stories " of RIPPLE, DINO, ARDEO, NAM VIET, SPICES, LAVANDOU, BIBLO'S, SORRISO, INDIQUE, ST. ARNOLDS, PALENA , MEDIUM RARE, and so many more : exciting.

I HAVE ENJOYED ON Saturday afternoon's here listening to regular customers like Samantha come in with her friend and speak about their dining experiences at PULPO. She said that she might still prefer the old chef and not the " new " one : Billy Klein. She's willing to give Billy a chance , of course, and will return again and I will ask her what she thinks then? That's okay, she's the only one that has said this so far. Mostly everything I hear is positive about PULPO. That's so encouraging, we need this!

AS YOU MAY REMEMBER that space lay empty for so many years - more than seven - when McDonald's left there. It was an eye-sore : now it's exciting and a " destination ". I always want to enter each time I pass as I both see and hear the musicians and their " live music ". That calls out to me each and every time! I'm a sucker for live music, I really am. I would like to see - to hear more of it here in our neighborhood. I believe it will help to keep many of our younger residents here and not going to other D.C. neighborhoods because we are not showing enough of our vibrant, thrilling, electric, energized and entertaining side! Show some of our skin- so-to-speak, ;  show we can still dance and samba and fox trot and tango. We'll make no bones about " our lines " : they will not be blurred - they will be true and clear, fun, fresh and alive!

ANYWAY, Dave has come here to trade stories, talk shop, talk ideas and together gain some perspective. I have been talking of going there and I had my chance this past Saturday. I spoke with him at our table and asked him for recommendations. As he spoke I told our waiter to bring us this, bring us that, don't forget  it, maybe bring us two?!? Oh yes, that's sounds so good, can't wait to try this. It was like a bit of quick theater that my family enjoyed listening to. Made their jobs that much easier. With a refreshing, light white Sangria and two small platters to greet us we were off with our lively conversation. One dish after another, like Spanish tapas kept arriving and we would each take our portions and taste , try on for size, fit and feel what we liked or did not so much.

I LOVED THE frittatas of Serrano Ham, Chorizo, Smoked Salmon. The Eggs Benedict were really tasty, too. The Ensaladas of White Bean and Pearl Cous Cous really hit the spot as well. It was a theatrical treat of color, sound, smells , textures, solids-to-liquids. The service was very good , and as a special treat our waiter gave us an extra-helping of the Smoked Salmon on the Frittata. He may do the same for you?

I GOT TO MEET the owner Dino Tapper that came to our table personally to welcome us. That was nice. We spoke awhile and I remembered the old days of Floriana. That took me back a ways.

I DID NOT GET to meet executive chef/ partner Billy Klein. That's okay. Dave pointed him out to me in the kitchen feet away from us, with his back to us, facing the ovens and stoves and busy at work as one would expect and hope.

HAVING DAVE HANSEN here in our neighborhood encourages me. It's a good sign. Energy, thought, inspiration, new ideas being tossed about by him and his staff, just like by all of us - continually as we do all that we can to keep the business, the heart-and-soul pf Cleveland Park PUMPING and ALIVE. We are a force to be reckoned with, we are special, we are important to Washington D.C. Cleveland Park 20008 is a " Happenin' Place " and we are all proud of it and doing all that we can as businesses, residents, neighbors, caring individuals, guests from around the world, to keep the flame bright, marching ahead, marching on, gathering ...

AS WE GATHER AGAIN TOMORROW as a team, as a working and functioning unit of caring, motivated, dedicated, thoughtful, civic, social, sharing people that are working constantly for a better world, a better life, less prejudice, less hunger, less inequality on every level, a place where all our concerns and voices may be better heard and answered.

WHERE HAVE WE COME FROM, where have we gone, where will we still go?! Keep the dreams alive, keep them coming, eat your fears, chew them, and spit them out, and never fear fear as it will eat us all alive.

I WOKE UP FROM A DREAM today , as I did yesterday and the day before and I rushed to my typewriter to record my thoughts, feelings, impressions, words and sentiments before they disappeared as quickly as they came. I found myself doing this yesterday on scraps of pieces of paper while out and about with my son and wife. It did not matter! Poetry, emotion, a grand release that was nice later when cooking dinner and ...

ENJOYING MY GLASS  of PIAN DI NOVA 2010, a dry Tuscan red blend from IL BORRO in Arezzo, Italy of 75% Syrah and 25% Sangiovese,$32.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume. I kept day-dreaming by the grill : " So this is what Syrah from Tuscany can taste like : a nice mouth-feel, a nice grip, a gentle girth, a warmth of soft spice and dusty earth, a youth that is still finding it;s way, learning it worth, paying it's dues. I would like to come back to this 2010 PIAN DI NOVA in another three or so years!

Washington D.C.'S Cleveland Park Northwest, 20008, " The Happenin' Place " Ripe Red Totally Local Wine Grapes Ready To Be Eaten, Picked, Made Wine With @ The Firehook Bakery On Connecticut Avenue! The Smell & Bouquet Of The Grapes Is Intoxicating!

Want to eat ripe grapes? Want to make wine with Washington D.C. grapes?!?   This is your chance! I just walked through the courtyard of the Firehook Bakery trying to get " to get to work on time ! ", Hear that before , in the famous song : " Get me to the church on time! ".   ANYWAY, the first thing that greeted me on this cool, a touch foggy, misty morning was the smell of ripe grapes there hanging from the arbors that circle the courtyard and the small fountain in the center, just below the last vestiges of the AROMA Italian restaurant of Bobby and his parents with the large stuffed wild animals that would greet you as you walked in the front doors, remember? It's been awhile hasn't it. Time does not stand still.
After being frightened by the wild stuffed animals you could find comfort, relief and joy in the back courtyard with the magnificent wall mural that looks down on everyone there.
IT'S STILL THERE, and I love that, along with the grapes, too. A few weeks ago I saw Booby himself up pruning these vines, what a sight that was. He still cares, he's still obviously proud of this. We thanks you Bobby.
SO : go by, sit under these arbors and look up and take some of the grapes and eat them, ask if you can have some to make a bottle or two of wine? I know a lot of you do this. Here's your chance NOW to make Washington D.C. wine! What fun, what a treat. Don't miss this opportunity. Tell others. I'd like to taste it : Cleveland Park, Northwest, Washington D.C. 20008 wine, It doesn't have to be great, just fun and a treat, something special, something TOTALLY LOCAL! Cheers, Happy Thursday, Aug. 29th, 2013 10:17AM, the aroma of these grapes now is completely intoxicating and wonderful, too.  Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn

Enjoyed Yesterday At 1st With Wine Rep Mark Congdon Of J.W. Sieg & Michel Dumas Some 2011 100% Lagrein Red From The AZIENDA AGRICOLA BALTER, Then Later @ Home With My Wife Here In Northern Virginia! A Treat!!

Drank some great dry Lagrein red last night from the Azienda Agricola Balter, the 2011, 12.5% alcohol by volume : it's a cousin of the Malbec grape they say, from Rovere, Trentino : that's softer, rounder, richer, mellower, more fruit-forward and smooth than most, this one more drinkable on it's own than most. This weekend you get a chance to try it here in the store. I will include that info shortly. Love this dry red, went great with the Pesto Tirtellini that my wife fixed us last night for dinner with our Parmesan cheese, too! Cheers, Happy Thursday, August 29th, 2013 : it's still the summer, wow, what a treat still : enjoy it while you can.   Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn    This wine will be included in our weekend tasting , our Labor Day Weekend in Cleveland Park neighborhood, Washington D.C. Northwest, 20008, 202-363-4265   anthony.quinn@clevelandparkwines.com, come on by : it's free always, call or email for more information. This sure is a real treat and very reasonably-priced, too at under $20 a bottle retail. Cheers, Happy Thursday, August 29th, 2013 ... it's still summer here, enjoy it with a bottle of this delicious Lagrein dry 2011 red from Trentino. I wonder if they have any relatives making wine in Brazil as so many did move there and are making wines now?!?  Tell me if any of you know? Thanks,   TONY

that was just proposed to us.

FOR EXAMPLE : Lindsay Marsh just showed Michel and me this past week an
assortment of the " new " whiskies from the LEOPOLD BROS. I have two here in the
office. We tasted 19 I believe? I know that we tasted a number of them and that
they are working on a " new " one that they cannot as yet divulge.

LINDSAY MARSH has come to the store now and already tasted five or so of these
LEOPOLD BROS. whiskies. They were already really well-received. When Michel and
I tried them last week we had nothing but praise for them. I think that we have
six of them now in the store. Here are two that I brought to the office :

1)  New York Apple Flavored Whisky ( $35.99, 40% alcohol by volume, Batch
No. 1226, www.leopoldbros.com, Denver, CO. 80239) made from : " ... New York
State apples marry perfectly with the subtle oak, vanilla, and raisin finish of
our whiskey in this uniquely blended spirit ". It's so rich and thick and full
on the palate. You get so much immediately and it's so nice to sip slowly and
let all the flavors spread over your tongue and seep into you many senses, too.
It's pretty amazing. Don't rush it, close your eyes, swallow in steps - always
leaving a bit still on your tongue - as the flavors explode and intensify and
multiply. it's pretty much like enjoying a good bottle of wine. You pay for the
whole bottle so get your money's worth and let the flavors and tastes linger and
make their subtle influences known fully to you. The patience will be well worth
your time and care and notice.

2) American Small Batch Whiskey from the LEOPOLD BROS - Pot Distilled from
Open-Fermented Sour Mash ( $35.99, 43% alcohol  by volume, www.leopoldbros.com,

as soon as I know it.
I JUST RECEIVED an email from Lindsay and I have three other web pages to
add. This company is doing a whole lot of really good things. Check them out at
: www.NonoFogo.com, www.TequilaRack.com,www.MotherEarthBrewing.com. I have a
really good feeling about all of this and I do think that we will be a great
source for the LEOPOLD BROS whiskies for you all.

BUT HEY, this is also beer weather and I have some really fun suggestions from

FACTOR for us all. Yesterday was great and so maybe the humidity will vanish and
the sunshine and blue skies will prevail once again?

check it out. Great taste.

CIDERS ARE SO BIG NOW, They are everywhere , especially here in the store.

TITILATING WINES From Michel & Tony :

REDS :

1) Tempranillo 2011 dry red from Hacienda LOS HAROLDOS ( On Special for
$8.99. Mendoza, Argentina ) is new and exciting and such a special wine to enjoy
now with or without a meal. Very smooth, no bite, medium-bodied and
fruit-forward, chill and enjoy anytime now., inside or outside.
2) 2009 Cotes Du Rhone dry red from Charles Thomas ( $8.99 ) : delicious to
enjoy slightly chilled now : medium-body, really a nicely-balanced inexpensive
dry , spicy, toasty red.
3) 2009 Gamay Noir called " Bone-Jolly " from Edmunds St. John from Eldora,
California ( $19.99 ) is a great red to chill and to enjoy anytime outside,
anytime you grill. Tasty and fresh and lively with good spice, too.
4) " Paco Rojo " dry red Virginia wine - a blend from the FABBIOLI CELLARS
is fruity and fruit-forward and a delight to enjoy chilled. This is fun, this is
fresh, this is so pleasing : I loved it the other night sitting with two Swedish
ladies, one on each side of me as we discussed life and as I had to defend all
men as there was a wee bit of men-bashing that I survived beautifully, thanks to
the Fabbioli Cellars!      5) " Falcon's Perch 2010 from the J.LOHR Estates, CA.
( On Special for $13.99 ) is a great red to enjoy now with all this intense heat
and humidity. Chill it twenty minutes and open it twenty minutes before drinking
and enjoy with or without a meal.

WHITES :

1)  LEVA Winemaker's Selection Chardonnay/ Dimiat and Muscat ( $10.99 )is a
new and exciting product of Bulgaria. WE are thrilled to have it here as it is
quite tasty and flavorful and something fun and different. I mean , after all
who has ever heard of the grape Dimiat? What is the character of Dimiat? What
does the Dimiat add to the Chardonnay and to the Muscat? We will have to taste
it here soon with our local rep that sells us this LEVA and she will be here as
soon as we can determine a date. More to follow.
2) Chardonnay 2011 Hacienda Los Haroldos de Mendoza ( On Special for $8.99
) that is light and unoaked and everyone this past weekend loved it when Marcie
had it open this last Saturday.
3) Grill indigenous dry white makes this " Zagra " from the VALLE DELL'
ACATE vineyard ( $19.99 ) and it's shiny bright, thoroughly refreshing and
energizing and a dream to drink now with all this humidity. It will elevate your
spirits, Medium-t-light-bodied with great minerality/ theatricality, too.
4) Alianca Dao Reserva 2010 D.O.C. Dao from the QUINTA Da GARRIDA in
Portugal, this is another flavorful, original-tasting dry and complex and
multi-layered white made from 100% of the Encruzado grape. Jody Jackman tasted
it with you all and it makes for a great food wine : anytime you marinate food
well, cook your fish in lemon and lime juice, and order out from the two Thai
restaurants here, for example. This is pretty amazing - pretty special. Do not
rush through it, take your time, relax, close your eyes, hold your breath,
swallow in " steps " and always leave something in your mouth as the flavors
will expand and explode and intensify and clarify and overall amaze you.
Wonderful, really a nice treat, especially in these humid days, you need
something like this to enjoy. Thanks Jody for bringing this Encruzado grape to
our attention. Cheers!

" Doing Thai " Eladio said to me. " Not going to be fancy, a friend of a friend ... " he continues. Eladio said : " Around twenty." Eladio answered when I asked him what he wanted to spend. I already knew that with " a friend of a friend " that it had to be more about tasty and flavorful to match the flavors of the Thai food. I sold Eladio a bottle of our 2007 Merlot from the CASA VALDUGA winery in the Valle Dos Vinhedos, $19.99 just south of the wine capitol of Bento Goncalves. I told him that it was flavorful and dry like a good bottle of French Bordeaux or even an Italian Friuli or Veneto dry red, as the ancestors of CASA VALDUGA are either from Trentino or Veneto, Italy. Eladio seemed pleased and he mentioned the World Soccer Cup  in Brazil. So, now all I have to do is wait to hear from Eladio. Cheers, Happy New Year Eladio. Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn  1/12/14

Discovering ALL OVER AGAIN the Fabulous Dry Indigenous Red Blend Of Callet, Manto Negre & Fogoneu , The AN / 2 From ANIMA NEGRA : Cheers! Happy Drinking!

5) AN/2 by ANIMA NEGRA, vin de la terra Mallorca , 2010 ( $24.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, Falanis, 07200 ) : made with a blend of indigenous grapes : Callet, Manto Negre and Fogoneu - 80% of the wine, using both American and French oak.

THIS IS an experience to be treasured, taken slowly as the flavors, the bouquet, the essence of the red and beefy, earthy, pungent, perfumed, tarred, leathered, feathered, furnished, fleshed-out flavors and savors have a chance to take center stage and center-palate and perform and blossom and blazon a trail all their own along the surface and nooks and crannies of your palate, gullet, stomach, soul, head, fingers and tippy-tip-toes ...

AND SETTLE AS A FINE EMBER in the pit of your guts with the time they need, NEVER to be rushed, can't do that, can't rob yourselves of the full experience. This is a full-Monty experience indeed. Try it on for size, fit and feel and have some food, too as it's foremost a food wine - from Mallorca.

YOU WILL BE WASHED BY THE WAVES, you will be challenged, you may sleep on the sands, you may have that chance finally under the protective wings of these indigenous grapes from Mallorca, and the fine breezes that move ever so gracefully the sea oats of our beaches here, too ...

ON VACATION or not, no matter, enjoy this incredible AN/2 dry red from Mallorca, $24.99.
